increase the height of the exit hole and u will fully taking advantage of the lenght and dept of the sump....bio ring will be submerged in the water...
I agree with the idea Wanz, by raising the height of outlet, bio media would be fully submerged and i would be able to add more bio media too. but I am planning to change it to aquaponic in near future which is why I kept the outlet bit low so the plants are not submerged in the water. Which is something I didn't want to mention in video yet.
If you not worried about a tiny bit of trickling water noise, shorten up the outlet pipe, and put a micron filter sock over it, just secure it with like a rubber band, cool diy filter
Great idea Adam, i don't mind any trickling noise as my aquarium is in the garage with my other tanks and stuff. Appreciate your idea and thank you for stopping by.
Great video tutorial... Fantastic job, my friend, I really like DIY. I have filters like this, but made with rectangular flower pots ... they are very strong and work very well, they are in turtle tanks. Thumbs up..have a nice day. Marco
Thank you Marco for your time watching this video and sharing your views. Any pot would do a good job as a sump and I agree that they do a great job. Enjoy your day mate
awsome build love it. just a thought if you wanted more volume in your sump you could replace your end cap and raise your outlet up higher to increase and submerge or your bio media keep up the great detailed videos :)
Thanks bud, completely agree with what you have said. I was bit worried about weight on top of glass aquarium. Filter is still running fine and I have had no issue keeping fish in the tank.
Like 32! How are you? Awesome intro! Your Diy filters are awesome! Great how to! Very cool! If you get a min check out the video- update of tanks at the lake! I think you will like it! Awesome filter setup! Have a great weekend and happy fish keeping!🐠🙂👍❤️🐟
I am doing well, thank you for asking, watching, commenting and liking the video. I am very pleased with the performance of this aquarium top filter build. Is it an old video? As I haven't seen any updates recently.
I have a question on it. Would it be better if the cover to the filter was fully covered so the water doesn't evaporate? Also I was thinking of something similar but with some plants . Like a aquaponic filter.
I haven't had evaporation problem with this filter or the previous filter. My water evaporate more in my tropical tank with a sponge filter. Aquaponic filter would be a great idea mate. Appreciate your time and have a good one.
Thank you. Great work. Two questions: 1. What is the flow rate of the powerhead that you used; and 2. Did you continue with the Pothos in this overhead sump, or did the roots become too unwieldy and start sucking onto the biomedia?
Flow rate is roughly 2000LPH, Pothos are still in the filter and roots haven't spread too much. Only few came out of pot, rest are still in the pot. Thank you
Great video .Hey do u think I can use this on a 130 gallon or some how add aprotein skimmer To it? I'm using a canister and protein skimmer but I feel like it's not getting the job done... my tank looks horrible full of diatom algae and I have had it for 2 years I keep cleaning it and it still comes back
Hey mate, filter on its own might not be able to take care of 130 gallon tank but in conjunction with cannister would be helpful. I would suggest make it aquaponic and add some pathos, I did the same and uploaded a video. Don't know what type of fish you have in the tank but floating plants are best known to absorb nutrients. It would be a good idea to throw some in the tank.
I know the video is half a year old, but if you modify it. Adding high and low bridges you will end up with more contact with your media. Thus more positive bacteria 👍 but great job
Thank you James, appreciate your advise. I kept playing around with it so the water can flow through the media and not just flow at the top as in the video. Happy New year mate
180 gallon would be too much for this filter as filter pads would need to be changed daily due to the amount of bio load generated by the fish you have in the tank. I would suggest having another tank as a sump filter which will definitely boost the capacity. Appreciate your time watching this video mate.
Appreciate your time watching this video TS. I bought it from Bunnings in Australia. It's a channel drain, you will be able to find something similar in the plumbing section of a hardware store.
Hi, this should work if you make outlet hole bit higher so sump can hold more water and more bio media. I have drilled hole low as I don't need that much capacity. I have made a planter box and covered my filter and also put some pothos plants in it for additional filtration. Video is uploaded if you are keen in doing something like I did.
Hi Cheng, It doesn't matter if you use single type of bio media or few different ones. I have two different type of bio media that's why have used 2 in this filter.
Hi Cheng, the ideal sequence for mechanical filtration is that aquarium water should come in contact with coarse foam first, then medium foam and in the end with fine foam. This will ensure only clean water flows through bio media.
Can i make like this for my 3.5 feet tank, and i have a top filter so can dat same motor be used if I make this same like wht u have showed in this video

It would help and becomes complete if you could have a added how the water is pumped up, what pump and how you set up that
Thank you Sendil for providing feedback. Moving forward this is something I will add to the DIY videos. Appreciate watching the video.

Use a uv bro for tanks with 100+gallon uv is needed cause filter cant stop algae growth
how is water pumped from the tank into the overhead filter?
This is actually pretty decent bud.

can you tell me the brand of the storm drain please
Hi Bernard, it's everhard brand from Bunnings.
Could you do this set up on a 180 gallon? How big would it have to be

Hi Cheng, It doesn't matter if you use single type of bio media or few different ones. I have two different type of bio media that's why have used 2 in this filter.
