It's a candle flame piece colored black to resemble a quill, because he's a writer who wrote while quills were still being used. Let's assume it's a black candle flame - why is he holding it? I think you have reasoned it out well. The shape works for a large feather quill.
The face is not a unique print. It is the same as old obi wan
