    4:46 The text was a big factor in why the trophies got removed too though
    You're forgetting the game is multi-language, and this amount of text just multiplies absolutely everything that has to be translated per team with all the language options, so the text being removed is a big part on saving development time, it'd have been like 1000+ pieces of text to proofread

    • @italolxd3128
      @italolxd3128 Год назад +79

      Considering PJiggles perfect example on Reyn, it would probably be easier than you imagine. Sure, it would be more time, but it would also be worth it, considering that Smash Bros. not only wants you to experience your favorite characters crossing over but also find out about new characters.
      Also, programmers wouldn't write those texts. They would probably hire "lorepeople" or something like that who would know or research those characters and write matching descriptions. The biggest issue for the development team itself would be to asign texts and a "game of origin" label to spirits which is probably done in under an hour by the average programmer.

    • @juanrodriguez9971
      @juanrodriguez9971 Год назад +58

      And not only the text must be translated, but must also be properly localized, which is specially harder if an specific franchise already had problems with the localization like characters having different names per game, and some names also MUST be changed because it can mean something bad in another language, like Manuela from FE3H in Spanish, since Manuela is a funny way for us to refer to masturbation, and imagine having to do that for games those were not localized in the first place.

      Honestly, I get it, but I don't care.
      Telling people about series (or even just games or characters) they might not know about is very much inline with being a crossover, especially when including so many relatively obscure series and spinoffs.
      Fights leave you guessing way too much, and are just not entertaining past the first time. If anything they feel like a chore. Having descriptions you can just read in your spare, more chill time would add so much.
      The main problem arises from accuracy and localization, both of which having ways to work around it. Especially from one of Nintendo's most high budget titles.
      If they wanted me to care about ARMS, the least they could do was tell me what each character is like, not just ambiguously show me something that I can far more easily misinterpret.

      For the models, some of them were original creations, while most were just ported from somewhere else. e.g., the Mega Man trophies in Smash 4 used new models, but the Punch Out!! trophies in Smash 4 reused the Punch Out!! (Wii) models. I'm going to guess that most of the models are ports/reused, but even then, posing and optimizing them is a big undertaking. Though with all that said, simply giving descriptions to all the spirits would've run into issues regardless, like some of the ones you mentioned. The spirits already have weird rules around them (e.g., all the base game Pokémon spirits use the Global Link art aside from Detective Pikachu, and no human characters are featured), so I imagine writing descriptions would make things even more complicated on that front. Who knows how much help the copyright holders give in terms of lore/descriptions too, since Smash has had incorrect trophy descriptions in the past.

    In defense of spirits not having written descriptions, there are a LOT of spirits in Smash Ultimate - and like you said, one would be hard-pressed to find someone who is familiar with *every* franchise in Ultimate well enough to write a description for not only every major one, but every minor/obscure spirit in every franchise. Of course a game like Smash would have multiple writers, but even still, I suspect that a lot of the time spent making those descriptions would have to be spent researching, or even talking directly to the games writers FROM those many franchises.
    As someone who's done games writing in the past, there's a ton that goes into it, and especially for a massive crossover game like this, pretty much every entry would have to be cross-checked with the lore bibles (or the next-best thing) of every single franchise to make sure that characters and lore aren't being misrepresented. Never mind the fact that they'd probably want to avoid things like spoilers (though I know Smash hasn't always done well with that, re: Fiora), and that might make some descriptions tricky. What do you put for the Spirit of, say, Balder from Bayonetta? Do you say that he's her father, a spoiler for Bayo 1? Do you say that he's actually heroic and trying to help her, but eventually loses his way, a spoiler for Bayo 2? If not, what do you actually say about him? Because ignoring those two things leaves you with "he's the enigmatic bad guy from bayonetta 1 and totally isn't in bayonetta 2 just younger and wearing a mask ha ha ha" and that really complicates things.
    I think it would've been rad to have full descriptions of every Spirit, and I'm sad that Spirits were ultimately rendered as boring as they were, but speaking from what little experience I have with games writing, I can easily imagine a group of 5 people having to spend several months of development time on just those descriptions *alone*, and with the way that the gaming industry treats its writers... yeah.
    Oh also don't forget that every DLC fighter ALSO brought over many, many spirits, which would all need their own descriptions, and it's not like the original dev team could have hired people for their knowledge on the lore of intended DLC fighters, sooooo....

      I believe it was because at some point the ESRB updated its policies to be more strict, to the point that if a game with a higher rating is mentioned in promotional material of a lower rated one, the latter's rating will be raised to match the former's. That's why we ended up with Mii Costume trailers saying something like "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate × Dante" instead of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate × Devil May Cry". So yeah, even mentioning a M-rated game in an ad can warrant you a M rating.
      This was done after Joker's release so that's why his trailer still has the Persona 5 logo. And it doesn't affect content released before the update so that's probably also the reason why they didn't update Pyra's spirit from the base game (her outfit isn't as revealing as Mythra's, who did have to be censored from the start).
      I believe this update could seriously affect the chance of characters like Snake returning or Doom Slayer becoming playable as Nintendo wouldn't have an easy way to promote their respective franchises without being forced to raise their family-friendly game's age rating to a point where almost no one will buy it.
      PD: forgot to mention it can also be CERO's fault, since they are the Japanese equivalent of the ESRB known for being even more strict (Palutena was almost not going to make it to Sm4sh because her outfit was a bit too revealing).

      @velvetbutterfly Год назад

      @@banbanthebandit4002 okay but look at the history.
      When FE joined Smash, it was just Marth and Roy, neither was out of Japan yet, their Emblems were vastly different but they were noteworthy for being pure sword fighters, Link used other tools, and the title screens for both their games/boxes featured swords prominently. It made sense to go with a symbol that represented both especially with Roy being promotional.
      Then when Brawl came, Ike replaced Roy and was the only one to be known by the west.
      Lehran's Medallion could have been a fine insignia I think, but that would overshadow Marth who is the face of the franchise in Japan, so once again the sword makes sense.
      I feel like it's worth noting now how iconic the FE3 design of the sword is and how the OVA played a part in that due to it being the sword design used despite Marth's actual outfits changing. (Also, the OVA aired in the west too, making the Falchion more known than the titular Fire Emblem at the time of Melee even if NoA didn't have immense say during this era)
      It wouldn't be until 4 when people would have had a chance to see the Shield of Flames with 11 and 13.
      11 being such a low selling game that the series was going to end if 13 didn't meet a certain quota.
      And by this point, a lot of people got the idea of legacy in their heads. That things that have been there from the beginning simply could not and would not be changed or removed.
      Ness was there since 64, they knew Ness would be in even though he never got revealed before launch.
      So at this point, changing to Crest of Flames was something no one would want.
      And lastly for Ultimate, DLC shouldn't be considered for a franchise logo.
      Yes, 3H was one of the most requested games to have a character from. But if Byleth isn't in the base roster it makes zero sense for their logo to be used for everyone that was.
      You also had Snake changing logos for legal reasons.
      So options for FE Logo boil down to Falchion (3 characters and legacy icon that suited most of the games)
      Lehran's Medallion (1 character that sold poorly)
      Shield of Flames (4 characters, is suited to only those 4 but still acts as face of the franchise)
      Mark of Grima (people suggested this due to Robin's reveal and focus, cool design, unique, doesn't really fit anyone but sold super well)
      And something from Fates, be it Yato (just Falchion but new) or Azura's pendant. Either way only applies to one character and while I think it'd look like a nice design, wouldn't fit better than any of the above.
      While I can respect each idea, and it'd be cool if each character/game had their own icon instead of the franchise as a whole, Falchion was just by far the most appropriate pick for each game

    If I recall correctly, part of the reason Wooly World never really came back was because it was actually a last minute stage. The Smash team didn't have a lot of reference material to work with in Smash 4 which is why it's pretty basic. At least that's why I think so. As for stages like Orbital Assault Gate and Jungle Hijinxs, those didn't come back because the former took a year to make and remaking that one to match the visuals of every other stage probably would've been taxing, and the latter not coming back could probably be because it would be harder to implement that stage with the Stage Morph mechanic with some players being in the background and others in the foreground. Plus, if it did come back, imagine what they'd have to do about Steve's block mechanics when he's in the background

    Spirits were absolutely amazing and evoked something in me, I haven't felt since my teens when Smash64 came out!
    Back then we were still kids.. we were playing games inside a game! ... like later on in Melee, Pikachu with the green hat taking the role of some drunken father and stuff like that lol
    And the way how Spirits tried to recreate different characters with "what you got" ticked all those boxes for me.
    I can totally see how they are sort of a downgrade from the trophies, but we can finally do something with all the stuff we collect aside from look at it and read some stuff (which can easily looked up nawadays... not so much back then)
    Also, having description for *that* many spirits also would have to get translated first which multiplies development cost by quite a bit with that many languages. I know they would absolutely have the money for that, but I'm pretty sure that game came with an agreed-on budget, which also had its limits.

    Finally someone says something about the empty space on the stage selection screen. It would've been so cool to have 3 more returning stages just so we can have a complete box of stages like if it took 1 year to make Orbital Gate Assault why not reuse it? If bringing back 3 more stages was too much why not put the 3 random stage selections in that spot so we can a complete box instead of having an empty space.
    Also with the series logos why is the Fire Emblem series logo the Falchion and not the actual Fire Emblem

    • @velvetbutterfly
      @velvetbutterfly Год назад +1

      Because like 5 objects have taken the name Fire Emblem and when the series was added into Smash with just Marth and Roy they were two different things.
      Also Falchion has appeared in several title logos and the OVA so it was more prominent than any of the Emblems.
      And by the time another Emblem design would pick up any level of traction, namely Lehran's Medallion, the Falchion would already have been solidified with Smash

    Personally, I am a big spirit defender. We live in an era where online wikis and fan communities are increasingly an integral part to experiencing games (think of how important the Minecraft wiki or fextralife for elden ring are to those games). Given that fact, I think it was wise of the developers to not spend all that development time writing/translating info about characters that can easily be googled. Ironically, the whole RUclips ecosystem of people who make content specifically about smash kind of feed into the uselessness of in-game character descriptions imo.
    Plus, I really like the spirit fights. Yes, they’re a little gimmicky (and I think some of the status effects/items get reused a little too much), but they’re fun, unique, bite-sized fights that let you play around with some of the more casual Smash mechanics. And some can be cheesed in hilarious ways. I think any given spirit fight is more memorable to me then just staring at a rotating 3D model.
    I do agree that they could have included the specific game instead of just the series in some instances.
    Maybe I just don’t have the same nostalgia for trophies, but I think they had kind of overstayed their welcome by smash 4. I think spirits and World of Light are a welcome addition to Ultimate, and I hope they continue experimenting with different forms of collectibles in future installments.

I think very, VERY few people actually read the descriptions or liked to collect them, and i imagine all the text and 3d models took tons of time, money and space in the game, whereas spirits can actually affect gameplay. I know not many people liked it but, with world of lgiht and all, i think they add a lot more to the game, would take spirits over trophies any day.

    BTW, knowing PJiggles his tirade on Maria Renard was likely completely for the sake of the video, as he strikes me as the type to search something up if he wants to know it.
    As someone who's favorite character IN Castlevania is Maria Renard, lemmie give you all a brief rundown like he did for Reyn.
    Maria Renard originates in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, a JPN exclusive game, however the Dracula X Chronicles remakes have english versions nowadays.
    She is a playable character after being rescued by Richter (y'know, our fighter in smash) and is a little girl who fights using her magical summons and familiars.
    The Cuckoo are because her basic attack instead of being a whip like the Belmont family, is sending doves out to attack enemies, her special weapons include familiars that invoke the power of the Four Symbols, A white cat representing Byakko of the West, a Turtle representing Genbu of the North, twin cardinals representing Suzaku of the South, and a blue dragon representing Seiryu of the East. all of these being some of the most powerful of her abilities she can also summon an egg that hatches into a variety of birds, sing a holy hymm that damages the monsters of the night, and when she grows up, becoming both a playable character and crucial NPC in Symphony of Night (commonly regarded as one of if not the best Igarashi Castlevania or "Igavania" what many would call the Castlevania that's used in the term "Metroidvania") she also boasts significant hand to hand fighting ability.
    So that's why she has the allies in the fight.
    However her stage isn't really that symbolic, it's just indicative of Dracula's Castle without actually being the stage Castlevania. She's found in a sewer in game, and that's not really relating to the stage at all. Maybe because the stage has multiple layers you fall through? Like how you go under the "Main Hall" to traverse the "Sewers" in game?
