personally, I think that final act is integral to this batman's arc. if his arc in this movie was about overcoming the desire for revenge and about shifting his priorities from vengeance to justice, then that scene where he's leading ppl to safety is the conclusion to that arc, not the start of a new one. batman set of to punish the guilty, but that's vengeance. in order to ascend to the hero gotham needs him to be, he has to forego vengeance; rather than out punishing the guilty, he's here protecting the innocent

    • @stevenrasche3159

Personally, I think both you and Tim are right here. People don't just have one character arc end and then a separate one afterwards. Character arcs evolve, so this is the transitionary period between his arc for the first film and his arc for the second.

    • @upg5147
      @upg5147 2 года назад +10

Well see where I don't agree with Tim is that his arc was never "do I kill or not?" Throughout the movie he is shown actively stopping others from killing.
His arc revolved around what it mean't to be the Batman. Does he do this alone? With violence, with fear, ect. The final part of the movie is crucial to that because it shows us that he is planting fear in some people but also Inspiring others in ways he doesn't want to. By siding with the cops and then saving the people and helping get them to hospitals he is showing he is more than vengeance and that he isn't a lone wolf, that's the real arc of the movie.

There’s a quote I read somewhere, saying “If you can’t picture your Batman comforting a crying child, you haven’t written the Batman; you’ve written the Punisher in a funny hat.” And honestly, that’s part of what resonated with me about the Batman. It’s a great movie in its own right, but it’s also a palate cleanser from the fundamental misunderstanding of the character we got from Snyder’s Batman.

Well, in every way except how it is as an adaptation. The Lightning Thief was a semi-decent movie on its own, but the reason everyone hates it is because of how badly it butchers the source material.

For me, the "rising above vengeance" and "coming to help people in the light" can't be properly split into two arcs, so I really appreciated that he went from just beating up criminals in the beginning to participating in hands-on aid at the end. And to me, the "rising above vengeance" part was more poignant precisely because the danger remained after the bad guys were defeated; beating the Riddler and his followers didn't immediately fix the problems, and so vengeance-as-motivation wouldn't help anyone.
    I hope this made sense.

I disagree about the end, I loved it. I think it was super important to his arc. I also feel that it's a comic book movie and most comic book movies kind of require that level of action, that jump in escalation. I appreciated it

  • @aozf05
    @aozf05 2 года назад +8

The final part was definitely important for Batman's arc in this movie. He doesn't just learn to abandon his path of vengeance, but also learns to be a beacon of hope for people. It ties into how the Renewal fund had become corrupted and how throughout the movie Bruce shirks his responsibilities as a Wayne. The final part has him realize that he has to do more for the city than beat up criminals at night.
Also the Joker scene wasn't sequel bait. The director stated it was there to conclude Riddler's arc.

The url clue also got me, it was really clever. I agree with how the ending of the movie didn't really fit with the rest of it, I also wasn't totally happy with Catwoman's catharsis constantly being undercut... but I did love the moment when she's undercover and he just, doesn't get how dangerous it is to be a woman and keeps wanting her to make eye contact. It was good to acknowledge the experiences/perspectives Batman (and most of the audience of an edgy batman film) is blind to.

The best detail in this film is that someone in the comments of the Riddler's chat was like, "what gun do I use?" and then when they attack the mayor one of them has a shotgun instead of the rifle that all the others have.
I don't know if that's intentional, but that's my cannon.

I disagree about the arc of him becoming the light of the city feels like it belongs in the sequel. It doesn’t, his arc is literally realizing that he isn’t just vengeance, he’s the hope and light of Gotham. And that’s what the ending shows, him finally coming to terms with that he actually symbolizes.

It's been a while since I've seen it now, but I'd prefer if they allow Thomas Wayne to have some dirt on his hands. Having him "accidentally" kill someone indirectly by trusting Falcone, makes him more dumb and it adds to a cliche type of misunderstanding, where Alfred has to correct Bruce for confronting about what his father did. Bruce should rather learn to act better than his father, while still emphasizing (not sympathizing) with why Thomas had the guy killed (it was for protecting his wife of having her mental illness exposed I think).

  • @SirRebrl

He can still work on what it means to be the hero in the second film. His final acts in line with that in the end didn't require any elaborate development, only the decision. The answer to "how do I be the hero as Batman" was immediately apparent because of the situation at hand. Sometimes that's how it really is, that the major turning point in who someone is, is an event where it's obvious how to be the new person, then more work is required to fully integrate the change that decision represents.

    1) How did this coastal city flood so severely? Isn't the ground supposed to be higher than the ocean?
    2) Why did Batman cut the cable above his hands, making him fall, instead of below?
    3) Why would the Riddler suddenly sing Ave Maria? It makes sense because we heard the song before, but why would he just sing that randomly?

    • @jakeunderwood9

Gotham in this case is pretty heavily modeled after Manhattan. It's pretty much guaranteed that large parts of NYC will be below sea level before long. It's already close.

Okay, I just want to mention how comic accurate it is in the world. Off the top of my head Catwoman wears a outfit (the black one with boots, I don't know how to describe it but if you read Year One you'll be like, "oh, shit") is straight out of Year One so is her apartment, the coffee shop they find Riddler in is were Gordon and his partner Essex catch feelings, there's more, but it was really cool to see.

I'm late to the party, but I agree on the observation on the final part of the movie: in the theater I also had the feeling that the movie had finished and solved pretty much all the storylines with the arrest of the Riddler... just to go on for another 30' with a bigger scale story that did not feel as tonally connected.

  • @aguywithalotofopinions412

I loved the story, the vibe of Gotham, Penguin, Falcone and Batman himself (although I'd have liked a little more Bruce Wayne). I didn't love the terribly executed romance (especially since it's supposed to be the emotional centre of the movie) and while I'm on board with a young, inexperienced Bruce Wayne I don't think it should reach the point where Batman is essentially inconsecuential in his own story.

    • @rishabwarrier2769
      @rishabwarrier2769 2 года назад +1

I'd disagree that it's the emotional centre of the film in any form. The emotional centre is most definitely the murder in crime alley. As so many have pointed out on yt theres a reason why so many shots have Bruce looking at ppl who've lost family members and such. Like the funeral scene has Bruce giving dozens of seconds worth of runtime for simple looks and expressions BC it's all that's needed for communicating the emotions and pattinson does a great job of showing it. That is the emotional core bc that's what matters to him from the beginning of the film right up until the middle half where he start to lose his faith in the mission.

Yip I felt the same way about the whole flooding situation. It was off. Batman out of dark helping people like normal person might. You’ve built him up to be this legendary figure and whilst it would have been a dick move not to help in anyway you can, it seemed so normal… and tonally off. And just like how the worst parts of the Dark Knight is where the two boats don’t blow each other up, Batman films just need to stay away from the water.

  • @lolltaylor

The whole entire point of the last act is that Batman has to stop being a symbol of fear, but a symbol of hope for Gotham. When the goon he’s fighting at the end says I am vengeance, he has a moment of realization and discovers that the way he’s been doing these things is wrong. He can inspire hope by bringing down the criminals to make his city better. You kind of missed the point.

I will say, I get the criticism of the ending (I really hate the Joker tease. I'm tired of the Joker, frankly.)
However, as a Batman fan, I wouldn't have been nearly as satisfied without that light in the dark moment, or helping people on to stretchers. I've waited so long for a Batman who helps people, who IS a symbol of hope. And that ending really gave that to me.
Also the fight scene looked cool.

Mark Hamill’a the only joker I can really invest in.
Granted that’s ‘cause TDK joker actor went extremely unstable with the directors exasperating an on-going addiction “for the performance” to the point he became completely delusional and took his own life; and the “origin story” actor used “going method” as an excuse to abuse his other cast members and the crew.
But…Mark’s voice-acted performance as Joker is also actually…funny? And well-Mark played The Trickster in Arrowverse for an idea for how he’d do reprising as The Joker But Live)

The second one was ridiculously sexualised. I'm bi, I love women, but it was so male gaze-y (literally watching her undress) that it was clear the film was not meant for me.

My raw thoughts from 2 weeks ago:
    Just watched it.
(*Huge* caveat: I haven't read the comics.)
I was gonna list some positives and negatives, but that ended up being too negative heavy.
It just wasn't the Batman movie for me today.
6.3/10 (5 being neither good nor bad)
My favourite part was the soundtrack, but even there I think they overused that one soundtrack in places it wasn't needed.
There were a lot of little elements and scenes I liked, but I feel like the thread holding the narrative together wasn't strong enough.
There were a lot of missed opportunities in the Alfred, Selina, literally any villain departments.
What even was the Bruce Selina relationship.
Lots of convenience with how the public treated the Batman.
Weird scenes like that cable cutting 'sacrifice' that just broke the immersion for me.
The need for subtitles was felt albeit rarely.
Could go on but I don't want to be too negative, I still had an good-ish time.
I did like the riddles, and the relationship between Bruce and Gordon. Choices in dialogue and accents were also fun.

Meh. I dunno. I felt it was a bit long and found the relationship between Batman and Catwoman really unreconstructed. Like, he's an emo beefcake she works in a strip bar/brothel and her main power is basically "sex-appeal." He overpowers her in their first fight and whenever they go on a job together she does everything he tells her because he's in charge.
I understand the "dame with legs all the way down to the floor," is a noir trope but I just kinda thought they could do so much more with their characters and relationships.
Riddler though, was top, shame they didn't play up the "psychotic, super-popular influencer" idea more and some of the cinematography was superb.

Like in Year 1 were he gets trapped by cops and has to save that cop. Also, I don't remember which origin this was (Year 0?) he got stabbed by a hooker.
There's more, but basically early years Batman doesn't have it all figured out, so I like that his wind suit is shit and he falls onto a bus.
