    Galadriel's "The door is shut" line, during the duel, is a perfect way to reference the source matrerial instead of just direct quoting, and one of my favourite parts of the episode. In the book, when Galadriel speaks to Frodo at the mirror in Lorien she says "I perceive the Dark Lord and know his mind, or all of his mind that concerns the Elves. And he gropes ever to see me and my thought. But still the door is closed!”. I think this episode of Rings of Power showed us the exact moment she slammed that door shut? I hope they keep the integrity of this moment going forward in future seasons.

Plus, the whole torture sequence is from the books- Celebrimbor being put on a spear included)
    The "Dark Wizard" kinda must be a Blue one, we know the story of Radagast and Saruman from LotR and Hobbit (movies included) and the show runners already said that this isn't Saruman (it would be a bit weird if he were).

    The name works for me. Merrimac is the first person to give the Stranger a name because he knows what it's like not to have one, what he comes up with is limited by his own inexperience - as Poppy says, he's never seen an elf, and he's big, or grand. A grand elf. The other Stoors just go with it and something about it sticks, then he stumbles upon a literal gand and the two things blend into a name that just fits. I didn't feel the Harfoots/Stoors/Dark Wizard plot got enough time this season, but I love that TROP has tied Gandalf's origins to Hobbits, that the smallest, weakest, most humble people in Middle Earth shaped the personality of the LITERAL ANGEL who leads the fight against Middle Earth's Devil. I knew it could go either way - Gandalf or Blue Wizard - but I'm really happy they've chosen to bite the bullet and go for it. Daniel Weyman is absolutely killing it. And I love that not only did they tie Gandalf's origin to Hobbits (it just makes sense), but to Tom Bombadil as well - I don't care if it's essentially fan fiction, it resonates thematically in a really satisfying way. So wholesome.

    I think you guys are taking Tom’s phrase of The Stranger “finding” his own name a bit too seriously. It’s very possible that the Hobbits saying “Grand Elf” simply triggered his memory and reminded him that his name is Gandalf. It could be that he would have never remembered if he didn’t help the Hobbits and that was a part of the test. I don’t think that his name turned into Gandalf over thousands of years.
    It’s the elves/numinorians who call him Mithrandir and that’s because of the Elvin languages. The Lower men call him “Gandalf Greyhem” and “The Grey Pilgrim” which he earns through legend during his time in Middle Earth.

    • @davidbeer5015
      @davidbeer5015 2 месяца назад

      Iirc, Gandalf isn’t his original name either. It’s only what groups of Men and Hobbits started calling him, and it’s the main name he uses after. But it wasn’t his name prior to being in Middle-earth. I believe, technically, his original name is Olorin.

    Just an example of how fast a name can change over time:
    My uncle is named Charles, My father [the youngest] heard is other older brother call Charles "Baby Brother". He was too young to pronounce that so he called him "Bay Bruh" As he got older the name became a sort of nickname. So it was "Bay Bruh" for many years, and when we came along WE couldn't call him "Bay Bruh" that was my father's name for him, so we called him Uncle "Bay".... He's been called Uncle bay for so long, that my nieces and nephews and cousins all call him Uncle Bay and always ask, "WHY? his name is Charles? Why is he not Uncle Charles or Uncle Chuck?" *LOL* 😅😅

Only when trying to clarify stuff like 'So elves live longer than humans? Or are they immortal?' He also did say 'What if this is Gandalf lol' pretty quickly. But he didn't expect Halbrand to be Sauron so that reveal messed him up, he really liked Halbrand. Ok. Since we now know the name of the stranger I have a theory that this is a misdirect. I think he actually still is Saruman. Now, I dont exactly know if Saruman as the chief opponent of Sauron is in the LoTR appendix but the stranger (S-Gandalf) is explicitly told that he is in the show. I really think Saruman as a hero of a second age and would instruct Olorin-Gandalf (O-Gandalf) what the fight is about is more compelling. It would latter make more sense that hes bitter against him since he basically stole his whole persona since he had to fight Sauron while O-Gandalf is tasked to uplift people. It would also make sense why O-Gandalf would look to him for guidance in the 3rd age and why the other dark wizard said S-Gandalf convinced them to go to middle earth.
    I like Tolkien Cannon. I like the Movies. And I like this series. This is just me fan theorizing against the hate because I am liking the overall arc so far.

    I wondered how they were going to do the balrog. Good way to show it but for it to drive the dwarves from Moria which comes later. What Pharazon is doing in Numenor is going to have him find Sauron and the fall of Numenor will be similar to the books. Nice touch with Narcil. Also nice that Anarion is mentioned as he founded Minas Arnor (Tirith) and Issildur founds Minas Ithil which becomes Minas Morgul. They do not say it but I believe where the elves are hiding at the end is the future Imladris (Rivendell) and I believe that Sauron or his followers never gained entrance to that valley. Yes some things are out of order or timeline squishing but I think the end result will be the same. The end of all of this I believe is the end of the second age with the Last Alliance. :)

    Interesting comment about Viggo and Aragorn's sword in the first two movies. In the books Aragorn only carried the hilt shard of Narsil until the fellowship reached Rivendell, where it was reforged before they started on the quest. I have learned to enjoy the books and movies as separate things, but Aragorn carrying only the 12 inches of Narsil through the first part of the story was pretty badass, in my mind.
