  • Caput succadaneum
It is the accumulation of fluid in the soft tissues of the baby's head due to birth process.
Caput succadaneum is a very common birth injury and is a part of the birth process which occurs as a result of birth process. In this there is edema of the fetal head due to the fetal compression just before delivery.
    Mechanism of formation
During labour the uterus puts pressure from above and the undilated cervix puts pressure from below compressing the fetal head.
This compresses the venous blood flow and the lymphatic drainage of the scalp. It does not cause any damage to brain.
Due to the venous compression, fluid starts accumulating into the surrounding soft tissues leading to caput succadaneum.
This is not a very serious injury.

    - No treatment required.
    - Disappears within 24-48 hrs after birth
