The Mesa traditional V30 was definately my favorite, I actually thought the Orange held it's own as well. What a fantastic video so much great information, thanks! 🙏🤘
Well done, I'm one in crowd that believe's their all useable! Couldn't pick just one, all can be applied to a specific mix. I'm learning a ton from you brother! Thanks for sharing!
I recently purchased MIKKO, cant wait to play around with it.. last night I ordered the new Bgner Uber cab pack from ML.. sounds really good.. has some nice low end and huge midrange.. amazing
I have an Old 80’s V30 in a closed back 112 and it sounds great, it doesn’t have that piercings highs that the Chinese does. Interesting though how different they sounded!
Awesome video once again Leon, Definitely the original Mesa v30's sounded better. You won't believe me but I am using a small open back cab with a solid state amp that Trace Elliot did in 1990 Studio 30/80 w/British v30 16ohms
I was grinding my teeth thinking I was watching another uninformed v30 video. Thank god someone finally mentioned the speakers are voiced differently for each company. It matters much less where they were made because a Mesa v30 is literally a different speaker than the plain v30 you buy direct from celestion.
Also, the cabinets in the Marshall 1960AV are not even labeled vintage 30, but only G12 Vintage. They are of course different than the stock V30, same goes for ENGL, MESA, Orange not so sure but very likely - they all have their own V30 derivation.
Man, I love your tone. I’ve tried Bias FX and a heap of other free plugins, and can’t seem to find a decent tone. Feels like you make everything sound great and chunky! Not sure where I’m going wrong!
It's called mixing and mastering. Also adding EQ. And dual / quad triple guitars. Also the bass guitar can alter the guitar sound / tone. A single guitar won't sound same as in a full mix.
What you found with the Chinese and the Mesa is what I have found in general between the Chinese and the English ones. The mid hump is different and the top end is less harsh on the English. Now break in time has to be considered also. I've noticed the cones in the Chinese are generally tighter. One Mesa I have the cone is pretty loose.
afaik its not the same mic position, he positions the mics in the sweetspots which are different from cab to cab. its just the naming structure that is similar
I liked the English V30s in this demo, and thought that the Mesa ones sounds a bit dark. BUT I normally use the ML Djent and Cab Pack 13 for the Mesa 70 watt V30s which I dont think they make anymore. I normally use the 421+57 mic combo. Also you can use any of the IRs on any type of loader because the ML packs come in wav form, as do the Dr. Bonkers. Dr. Bonkers Mesa 4x12 IR pack is really awesome too.
It’s hard to say if English vs Chinese is the difference you’re hearing here. I own quite a few different vintage 30s and I can honestly say the biggest difference is impedance. 8ohm speakers sound completely different from 16 ohm speakers. Also an old V30 has likely mellowed out a whole lot more than a new one. The different cabs in this video would make a big difference as well. The only fair comparison would be same guitar > same amp > same cab > same speaker impedance > same mic position / interface etc.
very good points; IIRC these are all 16ohm speakers, which i should have mentioned. Next video, same cab with different speakers AND different ohm ratings...
The Chinese V30 sounds totally fine to me! The others sound more scooped. Often the sound of your drumkit will go well with other IRs you usually don't jam with. I often wondered about that. We are very biased in "how it feels" to play something. In a mix that is a different story. I compared the Gojira plugin in a full mix against my free amp & IR chains and the Gojira sounded muddy and didn't make it into my favorites by far. Mic positions are very important and switching through IRs in general can make your sound huge overall (in a mix).
Very good but a little confuse, i have a Nux Cereberus and i want play guitar in live concert Nux Cereberus we can import IRs with ther softwere but im confused what to use 44.1 khz ? 88? 96 Khz ? And 200ms or 500ms ? Regards from Portugal
The one time I played a gig with a marshalll tube head through a 2x12 w/vintage 30’s, I didn’t really enjoy it due to the speaker “pushing back”.....I usually play live fairly loud & the head was 100w. I think if I had a 50w head it’d have been different (maybe that would’ve been the sweet spot). I’m aware that in a studio playback, v30’s might be great, but live, I’m not a fan of speaker distortion. I actually prefer celestion GK-85’s (for me, it’s similar to an EV but much warmer)....they seem to stay solid and keep the same character at high volumes....of course, just my opinion. Ironically, when it comes to cab ir’s, I just use my ear....but still usually pick a V30 “last”......good vid, though. I guess I’m a greenback guy.....🤷🏼♂️
I hated the Mesa version....everybody likes different ones...my favorite is the Marshall version V30...I have an original Jubilee cab that I bought new in 87..It has the original Marshall/Celestion Vintage 30's,and its the speaker I judge all others with....Maybe I am just used to that sound, but they sound awesome....So,yeah,picking a V30 isn't as simple as it sounds...Your video really shows the tonal differences between some of the variations..I was actually surprised..I knew there were differences, but I thought they would be more subtle....
Leon Todd Yeah....I bought it brand new in 1987....I was at the music store, and was buying the 100 Jubilee Head and matching cab...the standard cab....it had a blemish,so the salesman goes to the back and brings out a 2555AV cab.....he thought they were the same....until we plugged it in....the head just came to life....it was $100 more for the AV cab,but I got it.....still have it this very day.....it cost $680 back then....it’s my favorite cab I have ever owned....it’s a 4x12,but the V30’s are 8 ohm....It sounds amazing....
Orange and Chinese V30s for me. Mesas had a scoopy thing going on I wasn’t fond of and the 90s english V30 was way too harsh. The others had a nicer rounder midrange.
Not sure if that was diff mics being but really the only accurate way to compare speakers is in the same cab, same mic, etc. I have some Chinese v30's, mostly 90's English v30's, and a couple of Mesa English v30's. I have a 1x12 cab I built and have compared them in that cab. There was minimal diff in the English and the Mesa English, but considerable between those and the Chinese. I don't have any of the Marshall English made. Most all of them are my spkr of choice. Some people say Soldanos are terrible with v30's, (I play Soldano) I really like the combo. I visited Soldano and tried a couple of amps thru a cab with the spkr's he uses and a cab with v30's and prefered the v30's. Not sure which v30 they were.
Another factor of real speakers if that their ohm rating effects their high end response. 8 ohm speakers are always a touch darker than their 16 ohm counterparts.
The Mesa traditional V30 was definately my favorite, I actually thought the Orange held it's own as well. What a fantastic video so much great information, thanks! 🙏🤘
Yeah the orange surprised me too
Well done, I'm one in crowd that believe's their all useable! Couldn't pick just one, all can be applied to a specific mix. I'm learning a ton from you brother! Thanks for sharing!
I'm more a less a "find one that works and use it for everything" guy so there's definitely something here for everyone.
It really is all in the cab and speaker. Excellent video man!!! Love the tones!!
Love the frequency of your uploads. Hooked to this channel, mate! Keep it up.
Many more to come :D
Rad vid man! One of the best comparisons I've seen. Would love more of these as im really torn whether to go vintage 30s or greenbacks.
Friday Q&A will address this :D
Leon Todd awesome! Can't wait. Loving your band by the way too bro.
Dude that means a lot, cheers!
Great stuff man!! I also always bump into people that can't stand them. I have a 2x12 with V30s that I love!
All about how you dial in your rig around them IMO. I actually really like them for low gain stuff too.
I recently purchased MIKKO, cant wait to play around with it.. last night I ordered the new Bgner Uber cab pack from ML.. sounds really good.. has some nice low end and huge midrange.. amazing
MIKKO is really, really fun. Would love to see even more cabs done with it.
@@LeonTodd they are working on more cabs supposedly
this is a pretty cool video Leon, going to try some of those irs on the axefx tonight!!thank you.
Keep me posted on what you do/don't like.

@@LeonTodd YOU CAN GET A HARLEY BENTON FOR LESS THAN A MESA?!

We have a similar taste in guitar tone 🤘
Man, I love your tone. I’ve tried Bias FX and a heap of other free plugins, and can’t seem to find a decent tone. Feels like you make everything sound great and chunky!
Not sure where I’m going wrong!
May be IRs and some basic settings! I can share some IRs so you can load them and notice the difference

I love the Dr Bonkers stuff, I'll have to crank that one up!
Leon Todd the I used Dr bonkers 421+57 mesa IR on most if the scenes in my mesa video
thats exactly what i found with my mesa combo, too dark and not enough bite,my english v30s sound great.
Ml Sound Lab has done the best IRs in my opinion
I have a bunch of 1960's and 1970's greenbacks 30w. They can do anything.
It’s hard to say if English vs Chinese is the difference you’re hearing here.

Very informative !

V30 china 2:02
V30 90's 2:25
Different cab, so take it to consideration.
i have a mesa 5:50 with a black shadow celestion(high wattage v30) and i hate it,i have a couple english v30's and i love them.
Very interesting!
impedance is also important with this kind of stuff...
Big time. Might have to do an 8 vs 16 vid soon.
Cool man, what's your favorite? (ignoring the fact that certain amps sound very different with different impedances depending on the transformer)
am i crazy ...i like the Chinese fuzzy one
If you think it sounds good, it sounds good!
Leon Todd what name is the chinese one and price?
This particular segment of the guitar community also claims EMGs are terrible.
Celestion Vintage 30s arent ok for metal and rock? Hah... Sounds like the same illogical backlash that the g12t-75 received a few years back. Crazy...
I love my cab with 75's! Gigged it so much and it always sounded great.
Yah man! I always loved them too.
I recently swapped two of the 75's out for V30's in an X pattern and it sounds huge.
Very nice. I have a 2x12's with V30s in it, and considered changing one out for a 75. If one pops up I might just go for it!
Your star wars models are not to scale, so I’m outa here
understandable
💩😝👎All Vintage 30's💩😝👎( stiff tone & feel)🤓however "Heritage 30's" (rock) 👍😉
Would love to try some H30's one day.
