Being an 80's/90's kid, and having a Birthday last Tuesday, I'm reinvigorated by this very noticeable time travel back to the shred glory days. It's totally RADICAL! 😂🤘🎸🙏
Circa 1992, I read a magazine that listed the gear in Phil Collen's rig and literally memorized the list. Not long after, I located a Digitech GSP21 Legend (which was on the list). At $689, it was an insanely expensive purchase for me at the time, and I didn't even know what it did. 😃I started reading the manual and was like... what the hell is a compressor?? Fast forward 33 years, and its still in my rack. Isn't it amazing how some of the greatest days of our lives happen and we don't even know it at the time.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the videos of Uncle Leon playing greasy leads, but a video from Uncle Leon giving us some insight and his opinion into the guitar/music world is just as satisfying. Thanks Uncle Leon, as we all know, you are one of the best!!!
I can't imagine anyone not liking the Rockman clean or overdrive tone, Boston 3rd Stage, Def Leppard Hysteria, ZZ Top Afterburner...Those are iconic albums because of the Rockman tone. My older brother gave me his Rockman headphone amplifier around '87 to use. It was so much fun to learn to play guitar using one.
Out of all the gear at NAMM that I have seen, the 2 things that stood out to me were the MXR Rockman X100 release and Peavey introducing their new tube amp called the 'Musician' which has 2 channels. Channel 1 meant for instrument level and then Channel 2 being for line level equipment like modelers and use the power tube section of the amp only. I do love the return to the 80's.
In my opinion, GAS is something we all experience in one way or another. I've noticed there are different types of collectors out there: active players focused on sound and playability, investors looking at future value, and those seeking prestige through high-end brands. While some get caught up in where something's made or being early adopters of niche gear, I've come to believe that if something sounds good and feels right, it shouldn't matter what name is on it or how little you paid. When I evaluate gear, I focus on what it adds to my experience, not how others might perceive me through my equipment choices. I wish more people could move past brand obsession and focus on what works for their actual needs, whether that's playing, investing, or collecting - just be honest about your motivations.
I bought a Peavey Bandit 65 in 1987 when I was 14. Saved up that summer at my job and you know what? It did suck LOL!!! Most of my gain came from my Boss SD-1 and I kept the Bandit gain at 10:00.
I'm pretty happy that 80's nostalgia is finally hitting the guitar gear scene lately after so many decades, but I just read a comment on the internet within the last 24 hours calling Limp Bizkit "early 2000's grunge" when they're nu metal or rap rock or whatever and most definitely not grunge. Much less there being any actual grunge by the early 2000's. As someone close in age to you who also started playing around the same time, it's giving me conniptions, lol Old man yelling at clouds moment aside, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing whatever 80's gear revivals that are popping up through your channel. I think the only Gibson Victory that ever looked cool was the Victory Bass with its almost Firebird-esque headstock and slanted pickup and pickguard thing it had going on. The Victory guitars though? Blegh. Glad to see the MXR Rockman X100 pedal video is doing numbers for you! All of your gear videos always sound great, but that one.... You could inject the sounds of that one straight into my veins for the rest of my life and I'd be happy. Pretty much heard nothing but hate for 80's stuff my entire life until like the 2010's (still quite a few 80's haters in the youtube comments, lol), so having a channel to follow from someone who actually appreciates that era of music and guitar tones and isn't just riding some recent bandwagon is really nice. Just wish I'd found your channel a decade ago instead of just last year. Sorry for yet another long comment on one of your videos.
Yeah, my “brand names” have been locked away in a cupboard, since I purchased MIJ Tokai’s, over eight years ago. And they hold their value pretty well. Can’t wait for the MXR X100 Rockman pedal to his our shores (in probably about six months time). I lived and played through the 80’s, but can’t get enough of that tone. Great show. Thanks.
I just bought myself a triaxis on the used market, fantastic piece of gear for a much more reasonable price than it used to be. Coupled with the modern cab sim tools (I use an Ox Stomp) this is amazing.
Great perspective of the “vintage” gear coming back - the MXR Rockman does the trick, for sure. FYI, I am just running this straight into the board, and will be experimenting on using it in the effects loops of the Fractal gear, as well as some Line6 gear as well. Haven’t dug in too deep on the Peavey gear yet, but it was definitely a big part of my sound back when I was younger. Still holding out for a TC Electronic 1210 unit, and I think that I’ll be good after that. The TC red and green pedals are great, as is the updated SCF Gold.
Strangely it’s possible the rise of modelling has meant players both old and new have been introduced to different amp tones. EG I had no idea Soldano made a rack pre amp and never heard of some manufacturers until I bought a fractal.
Born in the middle sixties,- watched Van Halen/ ACDC/ Motley Crüe at my first stadium concert in 1984 - yep, that VH tour - so I know what 80s tones are. Favourite 80s tones: Clean: Bryan Adams-Run To You / Dirty: Savatage - Chriss Oliva, Pop-rock: The Rockman - and being a long time standing Peavey fan boy I was really exited to learn of the pedals coming. Being a metalhead for Peavey the only interesting pedal to me would be the Rockmaster - wishing for them to do pedal versions of the XXX/ 3120 or the unavoidable 5150/6505 - that would be interesting. The MXR Rockman is in my country priced at 335- US dollars so it´s already,- nah! Give me a Boss compressor, an Emma Reezafratzitz distortion and a stero chorus and I´ve got everything from Bryan Adams to Savatage. Love the idea of a Rockman reinvigoration,- but not at that price point!
I wish they would just re-release the old Peavey Rockmaster with the four tubes. I regret selling that unit so badly. I’ve never heard so much gain in my life. Also wish Cliff would model it in the AxeFX, paired with the Peavey Classic 50/50 tube power amp.
The Bandit 112 was my very first amp, when I started playing in 93 or 94, with my Yamaha Pacifica that I still have! I wished I had kept the Peavey Bandit…❤
I just got the MXR x100 a few days ago. And I gotta say, it’s the one pedal I’ve been missing in my rig. It does exactly what I want it to do, and for all the right reasons. I love it. 🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
Meanwhile… I’ve two teal bandits that I need to get back, asap. I’ve owned just about every bandit made. And “acquaintances” never give them back. Trust me when I say: they dont use them. Time to go hunting!!!!
I’m excited about the Tone King Imperial pedal like the Friedmans IR-X, -D,-J. Doing the big pedal sell off but will probably get the new MXR x100. The Fractal VP4 is helping with keeping the gas down and saved a bunch of space on my pedal board. 3 dirt pedals (Nobles, Prince of Tone,Wampler GE Tumnus),boss geq7, ep and katana boost with VP4.
I see that the Peavey Decade has been released again. That was my first ever amp, with my first guitar the Tokai Goldstar. I wish that I had kept them. I really want that MXR Rockman though ASAP 😀
I think part of it is a lot of metal tones the last 15-20yrs sound the same and frankly it's too overdriven to the point where it's fuzzy/scatchy and lacks definition. As though you're not hearing a guitar just a scooped noise maker. IMO. Now don't throw shade but I've always liked Strypers rhythm tone, or something like Leper Messiah.
The Peavey pedals are worthless without their respective cabs. The demo I heard sounded virtually the same for all pedals ran through the same monitoring solution.
@ Why BOSS sold you twice or even more the same devices and tone as 40 years ago. Nostalgia and gas of bald deep married wanna-be-rockstar sofa guys with couple dollars hiden from their wives - thats why. It has nothing in common with music and creative. And real need as well. As for 80s - we can see clearly by majority means in culture music and so on. All 80s vibe things like clothes/synthwave/art style in tv shows just limited and very temporary.
huh. marshall building amps. hope Boogie and peavey answer with their headphones soon. make some murphylab aged gibson ones. i´m a bit sore from all the backwards hype. its lame, boring. why are so many going for it? who builds the gear for the future? what are kids in 2050 lust after? plexis? behringer klon knock offs? make something i have not heard before! source audio did that multiwave distortion. that tanked. sounds like nothing else on the market. can spot it immediateley. seemed to be only liked by guthrie goven jennifer batten and me.
I was 14 years old in 1980. The music in the 80s was in my taste mostly terrible. Plasticy sounding. Like the Rockman. There was also good music of course, but it is all a matter of taste.
100% feeling that 80s comeback
80s is a way of life.

HBD!

Born in 70 and yes the 80s were the best times for myself and others as the best times to be part. Music Happy times!

I was so lucky to be a teenager in the 80s.I had a Rockman that I bought back in 1988.There was a big buzz for it back then.

Same, Bandit 65. I have no desire to have it again 😂
Boomers like me retired with nothing better to spend money on, chasing nostalgia for the best decade ever. 😅

Great show. Thanks.
Fun fact: Peper's Pedals did a PV Fury 158 pedal 7 years ago and copped a C&D from Peavey. It's taken them that long to get around to doing their own.
Another way cool video! Thanks Leon! 🎉
The only person I know who played a Victory was John Wetton and that was a Victory Bass during his time in Asia

100%. Amazing amp.
Such a great pre
The Bandit 112 was my very first amp, when I started playing in 93 or 94, with my Yamaha Pacifica that I still have! I wished I had kept the Peavey Bandit…❤
This pedal already has 2 runs sold out. The data supports a return of awesome guitar tone.
I love all my vintage rack gear, in fact most of it I purchased after watching a few of your earlier videos that featured them a few years ago.
:D
I just got the MXR x100 a few days ago. And I gotta say, it’s the one pedal I’ve been missing in my rig. It does exactly what I want it to do, and for all the right reasons.

Time to go hunting!!!!
It’s a great time to be a guitarist!
With all the reissues, where’s my reimagined MP1?
British made marshall amplifiers, the prices will skyrocket
Just call the mesa the nickleback attack
We'll call it... NOSTALGIA DRIVE!!!

I love my bandit silver stripe, it's part of mah rig.
A approve of this message! 🎸

Best era ever
I have a 2009 Traditional and it's brilliant
Great guitars!
Hybrid Theory is all Dual Rectifier, except a few songs where there is the modded Marshall slightly blended in
Unmistakeable tone
The Peavey pedals are worthless without their respective cabs. The demo I heard sounded virtually the same for all pedals ran through the same monitoring solution.
Nice to see I wasn't the only one that thought so! I'll probably get 1-2 of them though.
Leon, your hair is fantastic.
He will not marry you.
:D
It's a shame about Marshall yes, the classic rockman wow experiment explorer improvise to your heart's content. God bless
I luv my Purple rack Soldano SLOR. Paired with my Mesa MkIII 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻W/D/D/W
This stuff is rad dude! Hang 10
Peavey needs to make a XXX pedal
Why would anyone buy a peavey bandit pedal for what they want for them when you could buy used bandits for 150 200 bucks
The mods have no impact on code compliance.
Yes those amps are way too xpensive
Sad new for MARSHALL, , Marshall has been sold to a Chinese company. Expect the quality to go way down. Look what they did to Ampeg
@christopherball7937: Everything Chinese is made better than Mesa Boogie and Marshall can do .
It already has been . Also can't find new ones in the u.s everything's been on backorder
The Marshall code, or “ secret” sauce was cracked long ago. No worries. It’s Just a logo
i dont like JT guitars anyway is a copy of Fender
all this 80s nostalgia reminds me former fitness model with facelifting after 10+ plastic surgery in her 60s.
m-k. Nobody wants.
If by nobody you mean everybody ...which is why that MXR pedal is sold out everywhere.
@
Why BOSS sold you twice or even more the same devices and tone as 40 years ago.

Marshall now sold off to a chinese company for $1 billion.
We know!!! Fuck Gibson/Mesa Too!!!
Buy used.
Good. Chinese understand the 80's vibe better than people in the UK at this point.
