  • I made bit of an oopsey in my earlier video when I stated that the DJ-VX50 uses a typical ""K" Plug speaker mic connection. That was incorrect but I discovered a very curious solution in the process of looking into this.

It’s more likely you’ll find that there is a resistor between one of the rings and tips or sleeves in the Icom mike than the 1/16” theory.
Radio is going to ground and engaging the ptt because of the lack of resistance.
Just a guess but I seem to remember Icom ht mikes having additional resistors installed to alleviate grounding issues.
    Great videos keep them coming.
Thanks for taking the time to post.

Thanks for the update. I had in an Alinco speaker mic for my old DJ 196 and it worked perfectly with the vx50. I'm going to make a video as well pressing chirp people to please try and get the vx50 compatible with chirp Right now I just can't justify the 50 bucks.. Unless there happens to be some fantastic features that you can access with the software. I look forward to a video on that if you make one.

Most people assume Alinco is a "Chinese" radio. Alinco is a Japanese company with manufacturing plants in Japan and in China. It would not suprise me at all if Alinco is the "Kirkland" brand of Icom.

I just picked up a DJ-G7 with the two-pin microphone adapters. The K compatible microphones do the same thing. Off to find a budget Icom compatible microphone I guess. Thanks! Alinco owner's manual shows how to use the adapter but doesn't say which microphones are compatible.

2nd comment, more of a question.
Noting that the speaker mic for the Icom ID51-A is compatible, would the Mobilinkd TNC cable for that particular radio also be compatible with the DJ VX-50?

How about the programming cable (like ERW-7)? Are there any catchups, too?

Icom speaker, noted down. Also, commountain is nowhere to be found. If you have a place where they are being sold in the US please share it.

True enough. They have vanished completely from Amazon. That's a shame. They made some excellent speaker mics. Looks like I need to go on the hunt now for an alternative brand.

@Carlos Roig Dude! That's crazy. I could buy a brand new radio with that.

@Carlos Roig I'm only guessing, but I think going with that Icom pin arrangement that is so easily confused with the K plug has resulted in some people damaging their radios. The Icom speaker mic works fine for me but this is a good example of the unintended consequences of making a weird design decision. And $42.95 is ridiculous for a speaker mic. Almost as bad as charging $44.95 for a programming cable.

Can someone explain why they say. If you don't use the factory mic. It will void the warranty

    • @KS6DAY
      @KS6DAY  2 года назад +1

I'm not aware of Alinco stating that. But I do know this has been a problem with Yaesu on the FT-70D and FT-3D.

@@w8aberadio653 You are correct. There is indeed a warning about 3rd party speaker mics. I wonder if it's from numbskulls, such as myself, that stick a K plug speaker mic in and damage one of the sockets. As I mentioned, a K plug will go in but it's snug as the spacing is about 1/16" off from the Icom plug.
