So many people worry about reliability of turbocharged motors and 10speed transmissions yet only keep their cars for 125-150,000 miles. In this time both cars will get you to wherever you are going. Now at 200,000+ we might see a difference but for 99% of people out there just buy the car you like the most. With all these people leasing cars and trading them in as soon as they are paid off, or even before, reliability really really shouldn’t be too much of a concern.
Now add two electric motors to that drivetrain. The new 2023 Sequoia is going to have just that. It would have been the first hybrid body on frame SUV if GM did not release the Tahoe hybrid in 2008.
I tow about 7K lbs on a fairly regular basis and have now owned both the the 3.5 400 hp and the GM 6.2 and while the 3.5 offers slightly better low end grunt than the 6.2 ( barely noticeable ) the 6.2 is superior on the long up hills because the turbos suffer from heat soak on the long high RPM low road speed pulls ( lack of air to the inter coolers ). I will probably switch back to the GM 6.2 in the coming years. Ford and GM make it very tough to pick a full size SUV these days.
I'm renting one of these right now and I must say this expedition is amazing. When you put this in sport mode, it literally launches when you gun it. I love this SUV! 😀
As a person who is currently in the market for a new suv, I found this extremely useful because I was planning on purchasing an Expedition Platinum but I was slightly skeptical. I am now convinced the expedition is best for me
Didn't bother trying to compare a competitively spec'd Tahoe because it was going to cost a lot more. I love my Limited Expedition so far. If you want to tow make sure you get the HD tow package, I think it's worth it regardless honestly.
Really a quality video. Thank you. I just (this week) got the Platinum Expedition. The dash and electronics are slightly different from the video. Coming out of a 2018 Yukon Denali - I think the Expedition is a better alternative. It is missing a few bells and whistles, like the heads-up display, but it rides better.
Another thorough and enjoyable review. I’d be very wary of towing 9000lbs with something like this or even a half-ton truck. Pushing the towing limits is never a good idea. Thanks again Alex!
I live in Colorado and go over I-70 often. Although I agree with your statement generally, this is a great ride. I would say even though the short wheelbase version has a higher tow rating, I personally felt more comfortable in the long wheelbase “max” version. I tow the same load multiple times. Same trailer. I’d take the wheelbase anyway.
Alex, the change holder is fords quick way to fill the hole where the trailer backup assist module goes. In previous generation you got the change holder or 4x4 selector. As for the ride it took the Tahoe platform to get to 2021 to get IRS. As you mentioned Expedition added IRS and air ride all the way back in 2006 and is still a great ride for suv category in my opinion. The fold flat electric seats in Expedition have been ahead of GM for years because of not having a live axle. My 2011 limited with 183k miles is still a solid machine and hope to save up for used of lease 2019 soon. I do agree Ford is always behind on updating Expedition.
Until GM released the new interiors, I liked the GM exteriors better and Fords interiors much better. But with the 2021 realease, GM is dominating this space. The GM twins just look more expensive than the Expedition.
I preferred the Expedition because of the independent rear suspension. Suburban has that now, but the turbo is still better for towing and Expedition tilt seat is better. They both have enough space so that's not a decision point for me anymore.
My wife and I still own the 2000 Excursion 7.3 Diesel 4x4 we bought new. At 211,000 miles, It has been the best of the 50+ vehicles I have owned. However, It rides more like the 3/4 ton truck it is based on.
This SUV just got redesigned in 2018, & it's probably getting a facelift later in 2021 or for 2022. But it's still up at the top of the class with the new Tahoe, Suburban, & Yukon/ Yukon XL lineups
I would love to upgrade my '13 Traverse to a full-size SUV. I like the Expedition, but I think I'd rather go with the Yukon XL. Hopefully after some depreciation kicks in I'll be able to afford one! lol
The "Change Holder" is where the Pro Trailer back up assist knob is put if you order the HD tow package. Below that would be integrated trailer brake controller.

This is a big piece of the puzzle that almost never gets mentioned. You can get a more fully optioned Expedition for less than a Tahoe equivalent, sometimes much less, but if you focus on the sticker you would miss that. Another problem is while the 5.3L has more cylinders it doesn't perform anywhere close to the ecoboost V6.
I mean obviously you can find issues with any vehicles because there's always people posting negative things. This Expedition, along with the Explorer, are two of the best looking SUVs ever penned. These two, as well as the new F-150, combine to make a very dominant section of the market. At the outset, I was disappointed that the 5.0 V8 was not even offered on the Expedition. Now, hamstrung by cylinder deactivation, any model in which it is offered at an obvious disadvantage. The Ecoboost and PowerBoost twin turbo V6s bury the V8 in payload, towing, bhp and torque. I continue to read about RV owners that still screw up safe towing capacity, pin weight and GVWR; refusing to weigh their rigs, especially travel trailers. The F-150 or 250 HD are at the top of my list because I'm buying a 5th wheel.
I'm a Chevy guy when it comes to full size SUVs, had a 2012 Tahoe then a 2018 Tahoe (still have it), and also I hate Ford in general, but after that last generation of Yukon/Tahoe over complicated design (and particularly ugly in Tahoe), I admit I prefer Expedition simple straight forward design. Pricing wise, this whole segment is going crazy!!! They are almost on the pricing level of Range Rover!!!
I agree with you on the price rise of the “big” 3rd row SUV. I personally am a Chevy fan and have had Silverado’s all my life. I drive a Tahoe for work and I love them. However, with the price gauge that gm expects to receive on their Tahoe’s/Yukons, Expeditions are more practical. I drove my mothers expedition and I am in love. The power, the turn radius, the smooth ride, and the quietness out weight the Tahoe in my opinion.
I trust Ford down the road farther than I could roll a GM to dealer service. I could do with a refresh to the large last generation explorer front clip though.
I had A 2007 Tahoe with 293k miles when I sold it last year never had a major issues . the only thing that I replaced was shocks at 230k miles and belts as maintenance items and oil change/ transmission fluid maintenance. And last New Years 2020 I pickup a used 2016 Ford Expedition with 76K miles and so far I had replaced he ac blower, Audio Modular, suspension Straus about $4654.35 in one year of maintenance. I’m going back to tahoe in couple years

I bet he'd get a big boost if he started dressing as a woman and told everyone that he was "transitioning".
Both the Sequoia and armada have independent rear suspensions. Maybe he'll figure that out someday. Also, first time I ever heard anybody call the pushrod engines that GM uses more advanced than the overhead cam variable valve timing engines used by Toyota
Direct injection, flex fuel, variable valve timing, and displacement on demand, or diesel, with similar HP/L to the Nissan/Toyota. Overhead cam isn’t exactly new and pushrod is very efficient packaging wise.
Thanks Alex for this bit of nostalgia. Once upon a time I drove a Suburban as the company vehicle and had an Expedition as my personal vehicle. I definitely preferred the Expedition. I found it disappointing to hear that they stopped building them on the truck frame.
I prefer the Tahoe/Suburban. However I prefer to buy depreciated used vehicles that I couldn't afford or wouldn't have wanted to pay new price for. So i bought a new to me Expedition Max for just under half of its original MSRP. Tahoe/Suburban doesn't depreciate close to that. Either way, both are super nice.
THANK YOU Motor Trend Auto Mundial for having the "nads" to say that the new Ford Expedition's (the King Ranch was the model reviewed...but, what I'm saying certainly isn't exclusive to it in any way) interior is "cheapened" by the vast amount of plastics used. I totally agree! I've been harping about that very same thing for a couple of decades now...and, I'm talking about all of the brands of domestic, and import offerings here in the United States. To pay the "luxury" prices for the top-of-the-line models, one should expect that the same word applies to the interiors of the vehicles that some will spend more time in than they spend at home. Sure I like looks, performance, and speed just as much as the next person does. But comfort, fit, and finish should reflect the absorbidant about of money spent.
I was just thinking that the profile of this thing looked like the Navigator. Forgot they were stable mates. Me personally, I put over 200k miles on my cars in less than ten years. Reliability is a big deal. I know the Europeans have had turbos for a while, but they don't drive as much as we do over here (and their cars are far less reliable). Turbos tend to scare me a bit. But I know Ford's trucks and SUV's are very reliable, so I would roll the dice with the Expedition versus the Chevy (that is unless Toyota got off their butts and finally redid their large SUV lineup).
Toyota does the opening hatch glass best with the Sequoia. Just press and hold the unlock button on the keyfob and all the windows will roll down...including the rear hatch glass.
Hi Alex! Love watching your videos. Right now I’m trying to decide between a used 2018-2021 navigator and the same years expedition. One comparison I’m having a hard time finding online is a headlight comparison. Can you do a video comparing the headlights (at night) from a drivers perspective?
the tahoe has always had a 2 row option, it wasnt a dedicated trim, it was called "custom" and it was a -4000 dollar package that basically stripped it the same way ford does on that XL trim. I guess the 2 row tahoe sells well enough that ford could justify it. When towing with the 10 speed its very safe to just cut off 10th gear, 9th and 10th are so close that theres no reason to have 10th (9th is a .69:1 and 10th is .63:1)
I wish they would bring back full size SUVs that were actually based entirely on their half ton truck counterparts. I actually prefer a solid rear axle because I take my truck off road. The current expedition, even though I like, has no suspension travel whatsoever.
The interior space does not compare to the new Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe’s cabin, especially in the top trim versions. Ford needs to give the Expedition a fully SUV specific interior instead of just copying and pasting the instrument panel designs from their pickups.
It really depends, you can’t go wrong with the naturally aspirated V8 in the Tahoe. That being said I know plenty of people with the 3.5 turbo that have it in their f150 and have well over 100,000 miles
Gm has had a lot of problems with there v8’s the last few years due to cylinder deactivation do some googling I’d go with the Ford for reliability today the eco boost are looking to be very reliable id say you could get 200k miles comfortably out of em. Also GM has had bad air conditioner condensers in there newer vehicles if you do some research on em they all have there issues but the past 6 years or so Ford has been better quality not as flashy and Goudy but they usually don’t release a new design every two years to where you look like your in a old model ....
12:06 That's too bad. I was willing to put up with the old tech in my new F350 but, sorry Ford, you really should have updated the 2021 Expedition with the new dash/monitor. Looks like we will be buying a GM product.
Not once, hand calculated, have I had 20mpg combined. Im sitting at 18. I do get great hwy mpg, but city kills it. Go to fuelly to get realistic expectations on ANY vehicle.
Plain Jane....yep! Kind of dull. But driving a school bus sized SUV seems kinda cool on long trips. And for sure Ford has a STRONG seat group in their design department! They also get a lot out of their suppliers too.
Alex, how would you say the ride in the Tahoe (with magneride/air) compares to the better unibody SUVs? Is it really the best SUV ride ever, or just the best body on frame full size SUV?
Alex, you are on a roll. Testing some of the most polluting vehicles on the market. This piece of steaming excrement can barely get more than 200 miles of range in the city. This thing will give you range anxiety for sure!
I tow 7k and have six people in my house. What do you suggest I drive? And before you ask, I'm looking at an EV for my 2nd car. It's not always as simple as big SUV bad.
I do think it is that simple. At least you are using it properly. Most people who drive these polluters are neither hauling people nor cargo but are using it as a single occupant commuter. It used to be that station wagons could handle similar jobs and with much less pollution.
Barry W. Why would you be watching this video if you’re so appalled by big SUVs? There are Prius videos on RUclips you may be interested in. I just bought 2 Expedition Max in the Platinum trim. One for my wife and one for me and we don’t even have kids😂. I still drive my old Excursion sometimes and the muffler is so trashed it spews tons of exhaust into the air😂. When I take it through a drive through and it sits there idling for a while, it smokes so bad it runs people out of the restaurant 😂
3:52 until 2023. Toyota will probably even add the hybrid system from the Tundra. Plus, you can now equip the ecoboost in the expedition to make 440HP from the factory...not sure why they couldn't add 10HP though. Toyota's version of the ecoboost makes about 348 in the SR5 tundra, 389 in every other trim (don't know why), and 409 in the Land Cruiser/LX600. Torque is about 480 lb-ft without the hybrid. So it should be competitive with the base engine in the expedition. The hybrid will have about 437HP and over 500 lb-ft of torque.
Ppl like to make fun of the chargers and challengers calling them land yachts. No. These houses on wheels are the land yachts. They make mopar muscle cars look like motorcycles
Hi Alex; thanks for the review. One suggestion: when you show the letter grade comparisons, it would be helpful to list numerical data for sound and MPG.
The Grand Cherokee L is likely to be significantly smaller, so I don't think it is a real competitor. The pushbutton shifter in the Tahoe is a deal-breaker for me. Also, I really don't like how tall the Tahoekonaliburbanslade's hood has become in this new model. So while the Expedition is the older model, I would probably go with that over GM's competitors if I was in the market for one of these vehicles.
It's a monster, yet cargo capacity of 21 ft^3 is the same as a Mazda 3 hatch (sure, with one less row of seats). Just saying. If Honda were to make cars like these, I'd expect double the volume.
Thank you Alex, so glad you reviewed this and the Tahoe simultaneously.

It’s great I just can’t wait for the infotainment center to be updated !!!!
I’m going back to tahoe in couple years
Clearly among the most in-depth, unbiased, comprehensive, and long established auto review channels on RUclips, (or anywhere else), I am surprised and perplexed as to why there are not at least a million subscribers. I bet he'd get a big boost if he started dressing as a woman and told everyone that he was "transitioning".
nah, that'd be like paddle shifters on a poodle.
What a strange assumption and comment to make. Projecting?
Both the Sequoia and armada have independent rear suspensions. Maybe he'll figure that out someday. Also, first time I ever heard anybody call the pushrod engines that GM uses more advanced than the overhead cam variable valve timing engines used by Toyota
Direct injection, flex fuel, variable valve timing, and displacement on demand, or diesel, with similar HP/L to the Nissan/Toyota.
Overhead cam isn’t exactly new and pushrod is very efficient packaging wise.
It's an absolute crime that this doesn't have sync 4
this needs the new interior from the f150
Thanks Alex for this bit of nostalgia.
Once upon a time I drove a Suburban as the company vehicle and had an Expedition as my personal vehicle.
I definitely preferred the Expedition.
I found it disappointing to hear that they stopped building them on the truck frame.
A good overall comparison with a ton of things covered. Thanks.

Looks like it’s 1st place.
When is the expedition will get a diesel engine option, or a powerboost engine option?
That’s my reaction...some kind of hybrid system to boost around-town economy seems like it’d be good in something like this.
It’s the same thing, just switch the grille and lights. They are all under Ford Motor Compamy
minivans are the more manly options right now tbh
Hi Alex isn’t the GM tahoe/ Yukon 3.0 L Diesel the most fuel efficient large SUV right now?
I'd probably buy an Armada. Nissan practically gives those away with rebates and dealer discounts.
Did you know that you can still get 9 seats in a Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, and Yukon XL
What good is the rear hatch glass when the bottom of the opening is at chin height?
Toyota does the opening hatch glass best with the Sequoia. Just press and hold the unlock button on the keyfob and all the windows will roll down...including the rear hatch glass.
Got one Limted trim. Love it 🥰 but then got sideswiped and now waiting for repairs
When towing with the 10 speed its very safe to just cut off 10th gear, 9th and 10th are so close that theres no reason to have 10th (9th is a .69:1 and 10th is .63:1)
Ford expedition... Where the gauge cluster screen is better than the center console screen.
That’s true. That’s can be updates sandcastle replace
Alex is on the roll with SUV's
Dodge Durango mention.. he is sneaky.
Pretty sure that coin holder is covering up where the Trailer Backup Knob would go.
Hi guys, Ford Expedition vs Tahoe, which one is likely more reliable?
@@joewayne9951 Ford engine should be fine just keep full synthetic in it and change every 5-7k.
12:06 That's too bad. I was willing to put up with the old tech in my new F350 but, sorry Ford, you really should have updated the 2021 Expedition with the new dash/monitor. Looks like we will be buying a GM product.
In the platinum power ratings are different. 400hp 480 lb ft
It's 440HP now.
The mark-ups on the GM line is insane
Ford cuts too many corners and will be flooded with recalls in the first year of ownership and that’ll increase!! Never getting a Ford again.
Schwinn would be better suited for you, tree hugger
Who can afford these monsters? Not a normal family.
I have a 2017 long wheelbase. Used 32k. 65,000 miles.
I just bought 2 of them. Both in the Platinum trim level.
What is a 'normal' family? A family whose parents never completed university, works dead end jobs and has kids they cannot afford?

Its crazy to think that a massive 440 magnum 7.2L v8 from 1970 produced 390 hp and 490 tq but this twin turbo v6 is making about the same power
1:27 perfect description “Gillet-style grill”
The refreshed Expedition will have a 15 inch screen like the mach-e
I'm intentionally waiting for the 2022 Expedition which is supposed to be a refresh and include a new interior similar to the all-new 2021 F150.
1:47 Wow this standard Expedition looks huge
That luggage is Airline pilot gear. What is Alex's day job?
This is only second-best if you like the quality and reliability issues with the Chevy Tahoe. I'd much rather have the Expedition.
Alex please do Lexus NX vs Mazda CX5! no one has done these!!
Tonneau cover for cargo when third row seats are folded?
I believe the bit about the reverse lights being incandescent is false. From what I recall, the entire tail light cluster is LED.
Love my expedition max 2021
A living room that does 0-60 in six>😍
Alpina xb7 do it in 3
Ppl like to make fun of the chargers and challengers calling them land yachts. No. These houses on wheels are the land yachts. They make mopar muscle cars look like motorcycles
Hi Alex; thanks for the review. One suggestion: when you show the letter grade comparisons, it would be helpful to list numerical data for sound and MPG.
Okay Ford, now let’s see the Expedition get the Tremor treatment!
I hear it gets something similar with a different name.
8:38 alex's favorite feature
When will you be reviewing the 2022 version? Or navigator? Thank you!
Did Alex just said there was 5 seat two row only Expedition?
Let's hope sales will be strong for these big SUVs as prices at the pump skyrocket.
Aloha Alex when can you review the facelift model with the blue Cruise Platinum trim 22 speaker sound system
3:36 I thought it was Toyota with the Sequoia in 2008. Edit: I stand corrected. It was ford with the second generation expedition in 2004.
Very detailed review. Loved it.
0-60 in 6 seconds was almost supercar acceleration back in the ‘70s and ‘80s....
Nice looking big suv...ford did good job.
