  • Stacy Finkbeiner, PhD, shares her insights on original research published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, “Impact of Tardive Dyskinesia on Physical, Psychological, Social, and Professional Domains of Patient Lives: A Survey of Patients in the United States.” This study reports the findings of a survey conducted with patients living with tardive dyskinesia (or TD) to assess the substantial impact of TD on their lives and on the management of the underlying condition. The survey focuses on four domains of patient’s lives (physical, psychological, social, and professional) and on how these domains are affected by the disorder. As Dr Finkbeiner explains, people experience the effects of TD in myriad ways. These can include neurologic symptoms of motor activity and sleep, feelings of fear and rejection, reluctance to join in social engagement, and difficulty maintaining employment. Over one-third of patients reported skipping or stopping their medication because of the severity of their tardive dyskinesia.
