Classical Gas played on the original guitar: Oscar Teller 8P

- As a teenager I was triggered towards the classic guitar by the
composition of Mason Williams: Classical Gas. It was a number
1 hit in the U.S.A. back in 1968. Only this year I found a video on
RUclips in which Mason Williams himself explains the way he
got the guitar that was labelled "Cordova" but came from the
Oscar Teller Lutherie. I was just searching for more information
around this guitar after I was able to buy a "to be restored" guitar
for only 75 euro's on an auction. I stumbled finally on that video in
which Mason Williams explains the way it went around "Classical
Gas" and the guitar he used for that recording. That appeared to
be the same model as I'm playing here now.
As the double inlay on the head attests (among others) it is the
same grade model. Oscar Teller produces this 8P model up to
these days but I would suggest them to re-introduce the double
head inlay and have it named: The Mason Williams model. If one
wants to make a commercial move around Oscar Teller guitars
then it would be this one! They already made a commercial move
by selling the Oscar Teller guitars under the "Cordova" brand.
They figured a Spanish name for a nylon stringed guitar would
sell better.
The circle is round now for me! For that reason I recorded the
song again and I hope you like it. Played with a more classical
sound in mind, maybe a bit contrary to the original recording.
I do believe that Mason Williams would approve. Excellent presentation of this classic.
I hope so but he once stated that he is proud of having composed the most executed popular instrumental of the last 70 years.... And he can
be proud of that to my opinion.
Thank you for this greatest guitar solo ever.
I was in high school when Classical Gas hit the radio and the old AM was about the best thing we had to enjoy it on.
You know when you fall in love with something on AM....It Is Good!
Bless you, Sir.
Thanks for your compliments though there are various other renditions on RUclips.
The extra with this one is that it has been played on about the same guitar, in fact
an Oscar Teller 8P model.
This song will live forever as a masterpiece
More than true!
What a beautiful performance. Thank you for letting us all share in it.
Thank you, and on my channel there is a lot more to discover though only the well known
compositions have the interest of the listeners here. What to think of a guitar lesson around
the accompaniment of "Hijo de la Luna": Almost 30.000 hits! I'm glad to be of help to others
as that was what I sometimes missed in my youth.
Lots and lots of wonderful interpretations of this iconic piece of a latter day classic composition.
This one?….. Absolutely pure!!
Thank you Barry, maybe still adding the trumpet piece?
From memory this was the original...the over done orchestral version does not do it justice by a long shot.
@@robvannNS It simply remains a question of taste. The adding orchestra also
gives it a kind of fiercing strength and the producers might have in mind that it
would be embraced by more people which of course remains a goal for a
recording company.
Nice work on a wonderful piece! Thank you for the efforts invested in bringing it to us!
You're welcome of course and thanks for your compliments.
Bravo! All those years of hard work paid off, so well done!
Hello Dan. Thank you. I really appreciate that.
Absolutely beautiful!
Outstanding tone, right finger control. Very impressed here.
Good to hear that from a fellow guitar player who knows what he is busy with!
What A Great Song .Glen Campbell Did It Fantastic With The Boston Pops Orchestra. WOW❤❤❤❤❤❤
He really did! And what about the version Mason Williams is playing with Deborah Conant on Harp?
lovely on my ears. Thank you so much
Thank you, I appreciate your words.
Stunning performance, thank you very much
I think my live performance of this song might
even please you more! But thanks anyway.
A most delightful performance and an informative and enjoyable commentary. Bravo!
Thank you!
That was fantastic! Thank You Noud.
Thanks Brian though there's always room for some more "feel" in it.
Beautiful performance! ❤
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Brilliant performance! Very well done!!!
Thank you. Guitar is still keeping me busy!
Gorgeous, such a mellow tone. Thank you!
That is certainly a quality of this guitar though a real
Spanish guitar might give another insight in sound.
Just take a look and listen to my other performance
of this composition: Played on a Manuel Contreras
guitar buurt in 1983.
@@2011Noud Will do, thanks!
Guitar tone and the phrasing is really pleasing to hear. Bravo.
@@gaycha6589 Nice to hear that from you! Tone and phrasing remains a personal thing and a s a player you have to be aware of the existence of it!
Perfect!
Thank you Mark. This was just one take. With some more
rest in my mind it could have been even better, I think.
Beautifully performed.
Thanks for your compliments!
Bravo..Bravo....I learned this when i was 10 when it came out...i still play and practice this song to this day..BRAVO
Thank you, and I hope you've mastered it finally??
Absolutly great 😊❤
Thank you Frisen an maybe it might be interesting to
compare this version with an earlier one on a real
Spanish guitar. A bit faster...
I enjoyed your recital. thank you!
Hello, Thank you. Then there is more to discover in my list.
Stunning!
Thank you, but it can always be better. 100 % satisfied I'm not most of the time. But to reassure you: I'm happy enough!
Excellently done!
Thank you!
Well done! Beautiful flow and time.
An important thing indeed! Thank you.
Brilliant performance, great story and the guitar sounds amazing.
Thank you and indeed the sound of this guitar remains closest to the original guitar and recording.
Excelente Maestro !!!
Very well done!
Thanks a lot, Dave.
Excellent- job well done 🎶
Thank you. I will carry this piece always with me!
One very tough piece to play, excellent job my man
What to think about the third part of Barrios' Cathedral? Just have a listen to
Celil Refik Kaya: 4 amazing performances. He is one of the best! But thanks
for your compliments anyway.
Bravo. A wonderful rendition of a classic.
Thank you. But there are plenty of others that are very good. It is interesting however to hear it on a guitar Mason Williams also used.
@@2011Noud Though you are right about there being many excellent versions, in your case it's the guitar itself that makes all the difference. For me, music isn't only about the finished song, but how it got there and the history behind it. Over sixty years ago, my mother instilled in me why it's always important to experience the big picture when she played her favorite Big Band and jazz albums. What a joy it must be to play Mason's guitar. Mom taught me unique ways to appreciate music from a very early age. I love the back-stories and the inspiration behind my favorite music.
Beautiful 😊❤
Hello Yod, Thanks. I appreciate that! All the best, Noud
This is extraordinary - a true virtuoso with an enlightening, invigorating performance. Thank you for this gift; it's truly uplifting and awe-inspiring!
Thanks for your compliments but I really do not consider myself as a true
virtuoso. For that? Check Celil Refik Kaya: 4 amazing performances. That
should be forbidden! L.O.L.
Very cool story, and great performance and sound!
Thank you Jimmy, I really appreciate that.
Amazing performance.Amazing guitar.Amazing guitarist.
Thank you Iacopo. Almost too much honor!
Gran chitarrista .
Saluti dall'Olanda: Italia 12 punti!
Bravo! 👏
Thanks a lot.
Excelent performance
Thank you! It still is a nice song to play and my interest for the
gutstring classical guitar started with this hit back in 1968!
Cleverly written and if you can play it you're a genius!
Absolutely cleverly written and to a certain point unique as there are a lot
of syncope rhythms in it and it swings in a way a medieval work doesn't do.
It swings in another way the South American music does. But I wouldn't
call someone a genius when he or she is able to play this piece correctly.
At least, I do not consider myself a genius to begin with.
awesome!!
Thank you. Great you enjoyed it.
Very nice!!!!
It was a joy for me to find this guitar and maybe I will even restore the
top and possibly I will French polish it for an even better sound result.
Thanks for your compliment.
Bravo!
Thank you and the comparison with the same piece played by me
on a 1983 Manuel Contreras might be interesting. Slightly faster.
Excellent 👌👌👌👍👍👍
Thanks Bill, I really appreciate that!
Well played!!!
Thank you Jennifer!
Una hermosa canción interpretada excelente. Saludos.
You made that guitar proud of you.
It often works in two directions. Therefore I think it is worth
to bring guitars from different brands under attention of anyone
who is interested. In that way it might help a bit to make a
decision in buying a new (or secondhand) guitar.
Brilliant
Thanks a lot!
great job!
Very Nice!
Thank you, Jarno!
Fantastisch Noud!
Bravo! I’ve had this down about half way through, then inexplicably set the guitar down, and never finished. I wonder, should I ???
After about halfway there are not that big challenges to overcome. Just give it a try and you'll be rewarded! A lot of people like tis song and most likely including you! Good luck.
well done
Thank you, John!
Mason Williams’ masterpiece.
Absolutely!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Space is time and time is space in the intirety of musical piece.
I agree but the experience of it is different from person to
person, assuming that the player in question is aware of it.
@@2011Noud Very good observation .
Thank you.
even mailen.
I really liked this. Try listening to Tommy Emmanuels version too. All the best to you and yours. Rab
Of course I know Tommy Emmanuel. He is a great player and
besides that a nice guy. But the warning should be: Try not to
copy him. He is Tommy Emmanuel. One of a kind.
That was amazing. Where do i find the tabs you are using?

@@2011Noud OK thank you for letting me know, i have resent it.
After the rubato intro on the record don't you hear a 12-string?
Not on my recording. That's for sure. Do you mean the original recording made by Mason Williams?
@@2011Noud Yes, on the original record. I play the piece and happen to know Mason as well. Also happy to hear you're playing Mason's original arrangement without the Mike Post 8-bar interlude. And your playing is letter-perfect.
Who did this song first ? Eric Clapton or mason williams ?
Mason Williams for sure.
Bravo. Nicely done. As an amateur guitarist I toyed and teased my way to being able to ‘play’ Classical Gas. After years of working on it and then putting it off and back on I finally stuck to it and recorded myself on my Takamine playing Mason’s song. I started with simple approaches. But to even get to a point to go through the many chord changes (if I remember right it was over a 100) and picking (arpeggios and lead runs) to play through the entire song was an accomplishment for me. This song at Mason’s tempo was just over 3 minutes long.
I used his sheet music and his original recording but eventually I found my comfort zone. It’s the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. So my cover was more like ‘Classical Gas KISS’. Ha. Whatever. You most likely get what I mean.
My version pales in comparison to yours. Thank you.
Cheers!
Want my version written in tabs? Just mail me at acakoevoets@kpnmail.nl
Looks like a Hauser Guitar replica
The German school of guitar building indeed differs from the Spanish
built instruments. They tend to be a bit more mellow and that was
probably the reason Andres Segovia played on a Hauser for a long
time. But I do not understand that Teller while still producing this
guitar never provided a "Mason Williams" model.... Remarkable is
that the bridge form seems to be copied from the Hauser guitars
of that time anyway.
Not bad
Sometimes a lot of comments are without any criticism. For some people
maybe nice to hear and read but I like an objective approach. And this one
is from the negative side. When something says it is "not bad" it means for
me there is a lot still to desire for ?
