I see the note you made in the description about their "day 1 patch". ACGs review (he played both pre, and post patch) said the patch fixed virtually all of the technical issues across the board, and he was super surprised by well well the game ran after the patch was installed (even on the standard xbox.... and the one X got a normal 60fps). Thats just 1 persons experience, but he too is pretty thorough in his reviews so I figured it was worth noting.
I still had stuttering and freezes all the way through on my X (Though nowhere near a bad as days gone on the pro). I shudder to think About what it was like before the day 1 patch. Great game other wise.

One of the best soundtracks in gaming. The original game (along with Rise of the Tomb Raider) was the main reason to get an xbox one in those first few years after its release.
One of the techniques people learn in game design is the practice of mapping out the domain, i.e. the possibility space, of the interactions and mechanics available to the player. If you can do action A, that action may have different behaviors in-game that result when it combines with objects 1, 2, 3, 4, i.e. wall, projectile, platform, enemy, etc. Every combination of interactions constitutes the domain of the mechanics. Constructing a puzzle is as simple as gradually teaching users about the domain by making discovering and making use of the domain a requirement of progression through a physical space. Every time you add mechanics, it affects the size of the domain. You can also influence the perceived size of the domain by combining required behaviors. Crafting puzzles is about understanding the full scope of what can be done right from the get-go, and then arbitrarily deciding upon a goal that forces the user to think about using the mechanics in the way you want them to. SkillUp: man, you are just my gaming shepherd. I’ve been playing this game for a couple days now and I was saying to myself ‘when is that kick-ass song from SkillUp’s review ever gonna come on’ and THEN the escape from the mill started. WOW. I am going to savour the rest of this game. That was so epic and all the more so for how quickly you have to work out what you need to do and how quickly the sequence ends with you safe (barely!). You have not steered me wrong yet with a single game. I have particularly picked up that we like the same music (battle track from FF15, Automata, this). Every game I play that you’ve recommended, I put more faith in the next recommendation. Lead on mate, lead on.
Playing this game was truely a wonderful experience. As a 33 year old man, I cant remember the last time a game affected me on an emotional level like that. That ending.... It was just perfect! Certainly made me swell up. Its at the top of my list for GOTY and i think its going to be tough to beat.
Having first played this game 6-ish months after release, I can confirm that all the bugs and glitches listed in the video are gone. I had no frame drops or other technical problems. The one bug I had was a minor map glitch, where 1 collectible doesn't show up.
Not to mention the plethora of weapons and skills you can mix and match to suit your play style, and the versatility those abilities have. Bash for example can either reflect projectiles or use them to propel you in close to an enemy, it's up to you how to use it. I just wish there was some kind of replay mode or NG+ that lets you use all abilities from the start and fight bosses as much as you want rather than having to play the whole game over again, or dropping saves with auto save disabled to try a new skill set in a boss fight.
I can't exactly double check right now, but I remember you can pick the boss fights from the menu. I don't think you can pick difficulty though (based on the save's difficulty).

When I was at Pax east last year at a panel that was held about music in video games they had some of the people there that worked on this game. Got to see some audio and visuals in the game at that time.
I also only played the first game for a few minutes.........until this weekend. I got 100% completion in The Blind Forest, and it was absolutely brilliant! I can't wait for Will of the Wisps later tonight.

I also had all of those performance issues stutters and audio issues. Played the first 10min and them just moved it to my ssd. That somehow fixed every single issue i was facing before.
I decided to check this game out after really enjoying Hollow Knight. Such a fun and beautiful game. I never thought I could be wowed by the graphics of a 2D game.

Just the way how you took time to detail the nuances like level design, animation and flow is what I look for in a review, and you just sounded like a person genuinely in love the the artistic & creativity in gaming like myself. The one other area of the game that wasn't bad but just not as strong as the first, was the story and some of the characters. They basically stick the old characters and Ku in the corner for most of this game and the backstory and motivations with Shriek, the main advisary, isn't as strong or as fleshed out as it was with Kuro. Shriek came across to me as literally an imperfect copy of Kuro just with a different, less personal motivation. Without spoiling it, Kuro hated the light (and by extension Ori) personally and sought revenge for a terrible loss she suffered from the light. Shriek just hates the world in general for not accepting her, probably due to her frightening, even grotesque appearance. They could have done a lot more with Shriek's story, not to mention Ku, but I really think they just ran out of time. Will of the wisps is, after all, a massive undertaking, especially for an independent developer. I'd give Blind Forest a solid 10/10. Will of the Wisps, a solid 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5. These are some of the best games I've played in recent years, maybe ever.

I don't know if they've released a patch as of 1am US Central Time but if they have not you can look on my channel for the frame rate issues I experienced on the Xbox One S. I am definitely not messing with this game until it runs specifically because it looks so phenomenal and in the short time I was frustrated with it there was clearly a whole lot of fantastic in this game. I don't want technical issues to ruin what looks incredible.
You really shouldn't have skipped the first game. Not only did you miss out on a story that directly connects to the next game, you also missed out on 10 more hours of fun content. P.S. the game is a lot less hard if you don't rush through it and get most of the life cells (e.g. at 9:00, which is near the end of the game, I had roughly twice the health and energy you had)
The difficulty also changes the chases.. i died so many times to the sandworm on hard while someone on normal or easy does it in the first try because the worm goes way slower. x)

Ori and the Blind Forest was for me what Nier Automata was for Skillup. It's the greatest game I've ever played and I am so happy the sequel lives up to such high standards.
I often wonder how much is the colouring in this game series. Like, it sure works on me. I only know I really want RPGs in this style that isn't just a hollow shell as they often then are. :)
I mean we all kind of expected that these will turn out great right? But I am still happy to know that it's great. I hope it get even more success and recognition than the original. 🙌

I just started this game last week, now already beat Kwolok, Mora and also complete the quest in Baur's Reach. I gotta say, I really like more on combat compare to escape haha

This sounds/looks like one of those sequels that is so much better than the original that it will make it hard to go back. That's saying something because I thought Blind Forest was a masterpiece.
Games like this, Monument Valley, and Gris really make me wish there was an official art exhibition entirely dedicated to Video Games as an art form. I know I'd pay to see it.
The V&A in London has had some video game exhibitions. Last year was one on development and there’s another this year. But I agree I’d like to see some dedicated to just the amazing artistry of games

The only gripes I had with the last Ori was the combat and boring collectibles. I hated it and just ran away from all the enemies and never bothered exploring too much. I'm so glad they changed that and made it actually fun, I have no doubt this will be a contender with Silksong for my favorite game ever made.

I am surprised you didn't speak about the characters (outside of bosses, which are some of the best in Ori 1) In the first game, the few characters you really interacted with were amazing and they usually didn't even talk. The cat-group I am really curious about in Ori 2! I am downloading the game now, but am being very conscious of bugs and p0erformance issues, since I hate playing at low framerates lol.
@@wildstrands3377 Oh, I can only imagine how bad it is for Iran. The virus has been spreading closer and closer to the city where I live, so my family will soon know just how the situation truly is. I think that halting the schools till summer is the best decision, because I've heard rumors that the virus doesn't do so well during the warm and dry months.
Ori and the blind forest was beautiful, stunning, moving story, loving made and sent me f**king crazy! I would love to support this studio, the dedication to the art work is next level but I just can't put myself through that again! Got enough stress in my life from my 2 year old!
I really REALLY tried to like Ori 1. I downloaded it like three separate times on Game Pass and never made it very far ... it's sucha gorgeous game but I just _could not_ get into it. I'm hoping maybe this one'll be different? That may be a bit optimistic of me but, eh, I already have it preloaded on gamepass so Ima try it at least!
I've played through many games, but Ori 1 was just plain boring. Nothing gripped me in particular, you just move left and right and slash stuff with a button with some ehh platforming. I gave it a fair chance but my levels of expectation and patience have changed. Mostly patience

Just finished this. Man what an incredible work of art. You nailed this review and added words to my awe. The art, music, combat, platforming, and the progression is incredible. It always felt new and the feel of this game while you platform is the best I’ve ever experienced. Definitely game of the year contender and on my all time favorite game list. I’ve been trying to find a way to contact Moon studio because I just want to give them a hug, or platonic kiss, or message, or SOMETHING to let them know they absolutely CRUSHED IT with this game. Thanks Moon Studios, and thanks Ralph for always having such insightful words.
Just started this game, nearly through it. Not a single glitch in sight now, runs flawles with no dips or stutters whatsoever. I did have to turn on Vsync though.
I just finished Ori and the Will of the Wisps, I loved every minute of it. I had zero performance issues and only experienced one bug (which was fixed with a restart). If you haven't played this yet you need to play it now. It's still on game pass, PLAY IT.
Are there items that can be missed? Because that was my only negative on Ori 1. There where some items that you could miss and never get again afterwards. Therefor, I only have 99% on my Playthrough, which kinda sucks tbh (e.g. items in the jump and run areas).
Note for future viewers: Most of the bugs have been swatted by now, and I'm sure whatever are left are in the crosshairs for the future. It's sad that so many games are published unfinished, but they're so expensive to make these days that I can see why that's the case. Get money to finish the game by selling the unfinished game. It's still sad, though.
Oh, when I see games such as Ori, I wish I didn't have a disability making it virtually impossible to enjoy them (my fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and reaction times are really poor). Lucky for me, there are good Let's Play's of almost every game out there. That way I have been able to enjoy many games that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to. This game looks absolutely gorgeous.
What I love about this sequel and also the first game is the set pieces, being able to do them all without dying just feels very rewarding and very beautiful, I also like the new grapple mechanic in Ori, pairing it up with Bash feels so good, there's this elegance to it when you use it, I personally also love the mallet weapon I don't know why I just love using it, I JUST LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH ACK
As a PS4 owner, I went out and bought an Xbox One last week for game pass. It really is a great deal. There were a few games on it that definitely made it worth the $150. Glad there’s another game
Don't own an Xbox but this game looks incredible. Kudos to Moon Studios for a job well done and to Microsoft for making it available on Gamepass. I'm a PS guy, but games like this one deserve to be celebrated. Great review from SU, as per usual.

I am playing this game 3 years later and I am stunned with how the art design and graphics in this game are. They are incredibly good.

The only bug I heard was still prevalent (but reduced dramatically) was the save bug.

The one other area of the game that wasn't bad but just not as strong as the first, was the story and some of the characters. They basically stick the old characters and Ku in the corner for most of this game and the backstory and motivations with Shriek, the main advisary, isn't as strong or as fleshed out as it was with Kuro. Shriek came across to me as literally an imperfect copy of Kuro just with a different, less personal motivation. Without spoiling it, Kuro hated the light (and by extension Ori) personally and sought revenge for a terrible loss she suffered from the light. Shriek just hates the world in general for not accepting her, probably due to her frightening, even grotesque appearance. They could have done a lot more with Shriek's story, not to mention Ku, but I really think they just ran out of time. Will of the wisps is, after all, a massive undertaking, especially for an independent developer.
I'd give Blind Forest a solid 10/10. Will of the Wisps, a solid 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5. These are some of the best games I've played in recent years, maybe ever.

I love how Ori show to all the gaming world that you don´t need live "live service" games or half-baked things to be an awesome experience. Im glad the studio take the time they need to release this second chapter of this little cute white pet, with love every corner....

I don't know if they've released a patch as of 1am US Central Time but if they have not you can look on my channel for the frame rate issues I experienced on the Xbox One S. I am definitely not messing with this game until it runs specifically because it looks so phenomenal and in the short time I was frustrated with it there was clearly a whole lot of fantastic in this game. I don't want technical issues to ruin what looks incredible.

You really shouldn't have skipped the first game. Not only did you miss out on a story that directly connects to the next game, you also missed out on 10 more hours of fun content.
P.S. the game is a lot less hard if you don't rush through it and get most of the life cells (e.g. at 9:00, which is near the end of the game, I had roughly twice the health and energy you had)

The difficulty also changes the chases.. i died so many times to the sandworm on hard while someone on normal or easy does it in the first try because the worm goes way slower. x)

Ori and the Blind Forest was for me what Nier Automata was for Skillup. It's the greatest game I've ever played and I am so happy the sequel lives up to such high standards.
I often wonder how much is the colouring in this game series. Like, it sure works on me. I only know I really want RPGs in this style that isn't just a hollow shell as they often then are. :)
I mean we all kind of expected that these will turn out great right? But I am still happy to know that it's great. I hope it get even more success and recognition than the original. 🙌

Skill Up reviews are the only ones I watch, even though I know I wont play the game.
The only SkillUp review I've decided to listen to and not watch as I have heard great things about this game and it's visuals and I didn't want it to be spoiled so thank you. I'm hoping the bugs have been fixed now as I've definitely left it a while to play.
I just started this game last week, now already beat Kwolok, Mora and also complete the quest in Baur's Reach. I gotta say, I really like more on combat compare to escape haha
I slept on this one. I played it a teeny bit and then, life happened. Giving the game a proper chance now...my god, absolute magic. I could see it the first time but now experiencing it is just...magic.

This sounds/looks like one of those sequels that is so much better than the original that it will make it hard to go back. That's saying something because I thought Blind Forest was a masterpiece.
Games like this, Monument Valley, and Gris really make me wish there was an official art exhibition entirely dedicated to Video Games as an art form. I know I'd pay to see it.
I guess that's what makes video games like this so great. They are supreme examples of the art form, yet also extremely accessible
The V&A in London has had some video game exhibitions. Last year was one on development and there’s another this year. But I agree I’d like to see some dedicated to just the amazing artistry of games

The only gripes I had with the last Ori was the combat and boring collectibles. I hated it and just ran away from all the enemies and never bothered exploring too much. I'm so glad they changed that and made it actually fun, I have no doubt this will be a contender with Silksong for my favorite game ever made.

You should :) I gave up in 2016, but 1 month ago I tried again, and that was fantastic. Hard as hell, but every minutes worth it.
I just finished it a few days ago, sadly with about 450 deaths lol on normal.

Playing this right now on game pass. 8 hours in. The only issue I had so far was I glitched into the terrain. Happened once. Enjoying it so far.
I am surprised you didn't speak about the characters (outside of bosses, which are some of the best in Ori 1) In the first game, the few characters you really interacted with were amazing and they usually didn't even talk. The cat-group I am really curious about in Ori 2! I am downloading the game now, but am being very conscious of bugs and p0erformance issues, since I hate playing at low framerates lol.

Oh, I can only imagine how bad it is for Iran. The virus has been spreading closer and closer to the city where I live, so my family will soon know just how the situation truly is. I think that halting the schools till summer is the best decision, because I've heard rumors that the virus doesn't do so well during the warm and dry months.

Ori and the blind forest was beautiful, stunning, moving story, loving made and sent me f**king crazy! I would love to support this studio, the dedication to the art work is next level but I just can't put myself through that again! Got enough stress in my life from my 2 year old!
I would say this one was easier than the first. If that was the problem you had.
I really REALLY tried to like Ori 1. I downloaded it like three separate times on Game Pass and never made it very far ... it's sucha gorgeous game but I just _could not_ get into it.
I'm hoping maybe this one'll be different? That may be a bit optimistic of me but, eh, I already have it preloaded on gamepass so Ima try it at least!
What held you back?
I've played through many games, but Ori 1 was just plain boring. Nothing gripped me in particular, you just move left and right and slash stuff with a button with some ehh platforming.
I gave it a fair chance but my levels of expectation and patience have changed. Mostly patience
@@milkyway7216 I had trouble articulating an answer to this question so I just didn't respond ... but I've played Ori 2 a bit now and I like it MUCH better, and I think that's mostly down to the combat, so, take that for what it's worth 👍

The art, music, combat, platforming, and the progression is incredible. It always felt new and the feel of this game while you platform is the best I’ve ever experienced.
Definitely game of the year contender and on my all time favorite game list.

Just started this game, nearly through it. Not a single glitch in sight now, runs flawles with no dips or stutters whatsoever. I did have to turn on Vsync though.
Yeah most of the bugs and technical issues are patched out. This game is a masterpiece
I just finished Ori and the Will of the Wisps, I loved every minute of it. I had zero performance issues and only experienced one bug (which was fixed with a restart). If you haven't played this yet you need to play it now. It's still on game pass, PLAY IT.

Are there items that can be missed? Because that was my only negative on Ori 1. There where some items that you could miss and never get again afterwards. Therefor, I only have 99% on my Playthrough, which kinda sucks tbh (e.g. items in the jump and run areas).
So this game has the greatest chase seen in any game. I've only started a day ago but I can tell you now this is one of my all time favorite games!

Note for future viewers: Most of the bugs have been swatted by now, and I'm sure whatever are left are in the crosshairs for the future.
It's sad that so many games are published unfinished, but they're so expensive to make these days that I can see why that's the case. Get money to finish the game by selling the unfinished game. It's still sad, though.
Oh, when I see games such as Ori, I wish I didn't have a disability making it virtually impossible to enjoy them (my fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and reaction times are really poor). Lucky for me, there are good Let's Play's of almost every game out there. That way I have been able to enjoy many games that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to. This game looks absolutely gorgeous.
What I love about this sequel and also the first game is the set pieces, being able to do them all without dying just feels very rewarding and very beautiful, I also like the new grapple mechanic in Ori, pairing it up with Bash feels so good, there's this elegance to it when you use it, I personally also love the mallet weapon I don't know why I just love using it, I JUST LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH ACK

As a PS4 owner, I went out and bought an Xbox One last week for game pass. It really is a great deal. There were a few games on it that definitely made it worth the $150. Glad there’s another game
Don't own an Xbox but this game looks incredible. Kudos to Moon Studios for a job well done and to Microsoft for making it available on Gamepass. I'm a PS guy, but games like this one deserve to be celebrated. Great review from SU, as per usual.
