      Gary? fellow RUclipsr. Thank you for the warm words, we love the machine in this Part 1 there will be a part 2, making the idler pulley and some of the missing standard gears and might have a part 3 this will be us showing the completed line of attachments and accessories that make up a completed kit form the factory for that special lathe, that is going to be like being in a candy shop to us both, so sweet, hope you can join us for these. Once again thank you s much for sharing a thought. Lance & Patrick.

      We are really, we mean really really happy to be back and to return to such a caring and kind group of people like yourself this all means the world to us. We never stopped working the whole 18 months in fact we probably got more work done during that time it defeated our purpose of being a sharing pair in rural desert town, so we are thankful to be so well received, thank you again and thank you for joining us, Lance & Patrick.

      Yes and hi 624Dudley, we think now 624Dudley that the event made the rest of the world know how it is we Patrick and Lance already live our lives as hermits that travel not more then say 700 miles annually total but reminder that way and this lifestyle is all by choice our personal choice, however that said, that global event was not a personal choice not something we wish upon others.
      We sure hope you are doing well and we are both glad to have you here for Part 1 of what might become Parts 2 and maybe 3 depending on the amount of efforts remaining here on this G. Boley lathe project. Thanking you again for the very kind words they matter to us here so very much. Lance & Patrick.

      Hehe, that hair it is really Lance just reaching screaming out, as you might not know we cut our own hair so we can buy more tools and machinery for the shop, this is true so why did he stop cutting the hair, it is actually Lance writing so it was time for a change good or bad it us, we are too compliant for all these years of cutting our own hair for almost 20 years if the memory is doing well. We thank you for stopping in and sharing these kind words. Lance & Patrick.

      You know what lukeissobad, we actually missed you and the others more, you see, we live so rural only drive around 700 miles a year total for both of us, so this social networking thing is our only true outlet, unless like we did for the past mostly 28 years and the last more resent 18 months just stayed busy rebuilding machinery and tools for our shop and not sharing i.e. no buddy knew anything about us or our workings), we need to be sharing. We are back and we are also all caught up with the open efforts around this great Workshop. Cannot thank you all enough for the warm return and welcomes, we thank you so much, Lance & Patrick.

      We agree our fellow RUclips creator, we think these two machines are amazing and they each came out so well considering that one is a very low 4 digit serial number while the other is a 5 digit serial number. We actually cannot wait until we share the machines accessories / attachments having them all and in great like new working order that is going to be a really great show in our opinions. Thank you for being here with us we are happy for the kind words. Lance & Patrick.

There really are so many, many we never new existed Paul, it is truly amazing to us to have this fine piece of German engineered precision in our Workshop Paul. We also realize the great feeling we both have when we read from you that we were missed and we in fact are not forgotten, we thank you dearly and we feel both equally blessed here Scott, Scott is Lance's middle name. We took 18 months off of filming but not off our work this is all we know and do and what we can now do and perform here is greatly improved meaning there is so much more to offer and share going forwards. Thank you again, Lance for Lance & Patrick.

    Spring has sprung. Covid is on the run and Lance and Patrick are back to entertain us. Sure is great to see you guys again. The only thing that be better is if Lance would find a barber.

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  3 года назад +1

      If we lived near a harbor we might acquire barber, but that barber, well that is Lance. We have been cutting our own hair since the early 2000's when we came to the realization that we could buy more tools and machines and save that time wasted in the barber chair plus travel even though around that time the barber was in the same building as we were located within. The issue was the man could not cut Patrick's hair straight always crooked so we have more tools because of that error alone LOL. but true. Thank you for the kind words we hope to do better work as we progress through the remaining months of this 2021 year. Lance & Patrick.

Thank you for returning to see and comment on our return show. Lance & Patrick.

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  3 года назад +1

      Hi to buy more tools and machinery as we have Lance has been the barber here since the early 2000's reducing our contact with outsiders (we are hermits) and while this affords us extra tool money it also affords to us the extra time needed to refurbish or rebuild each machine and tool we buy, recently we have been buying some new machinery to get us moving towards making our product a bit faster, but not too fast Lorem, we still do not know what it is we are making here hehe. Come back for our gift opening video and enter to win the Made in the USA patriotic gift we will ship it anywhere in the world for free to one lucky winner. Do not worry that tool and machinery hoarder Patrick is not allowed to sign up to win it, so we are safe on that note Lorem. Lance & Patrick.

    • @ActiveAtom

      Hi Jim we know the tractor watched that video cool ride friend from you a 1974 tractor. Reminds us of what car we had in 1974, it was a dark brown 1974 Chevy Corvette with a 454 V8 engine in it, had to jack the engine up to change the spark plugs, it was an automatic we sold it to a man in Australia and that was what I remember was how fast that car was, Lance was 11 Patrick was 7 meaning that was one year before we met one another Jim. Thank you for the kind words. Lance & Patrick.

    Well done, gents. I haven't seen one of your videos in ages. I am thrilled that the little Boley will be well cared for. It has found a great home. I am kind of surprised that it has a micrometer tailstock with the taper rather than collet holding. I look forward to seeing it cutting threads. Welcome back!

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  3 года назад

      Hello James, a fantastic question you present because it is likely others will have this very or similar question and might find your answer if they are looking.
      You are right we know them to come with the collet holding tail stock and that is preferred here as well, but this one the rare one, built on camera came with what the buyer must have order and requested it to come with, we however did buy and have the collet holding tailstock for it along with all those accessories and attachments we will be sharing in Part 3 when we get to show all of these part working on the new lathe project board. Thank you again for watching and sharing your question it is a good one. Lance & Patrick.

Boley, hope you come back and see this in action we might even make some threads here. Thank you again Lance & Patrick.

We are thinking those attachment and accessories show should be called the candy shop they are so sweet, wait until you see what all of these can do. Note that the accessories and attachments come after the making of the needed idler pulley system to operate these. They are like new these attachments but we still went through each of the thousands of components that make all of them up it is a real labor of love and we feel it is of important watchmaker historic importance. Thank you so much for stopping in sharing the very warm welcoming and kind words, you made our day. lance & Patrick.

Right now we have just insulated the garage ceiling to match the walls and we double insolated the garage door as well. It turns out we have enough money left over tp add a smart air conditioning unit to cover this open style rafter garage with plenty of comfort to spare so we will share this in a video shortly. You know what we know Norm, living in the high desert, be it here in California our in your beautiful Arizona, the temperatures can do both a freezer and really heat up and this summer, see our work, near all of it at this time is in the Machine Shop area (garage converted) at not at the already climate controlled Workshop area so we are off to a great start, well Norm that is once we install the air conditioner but the insolation has already helped a lot here. Thank you for continuing with us Norm. Lance & Patrick.

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  3 года назад

      Hi fellow RUclipsr and friend Brain. Cantilever is a good name for that style. Those are an overall length bed of 12.00 inches. It is what that the standard watchmaker lathes have, a single mount post to bed leg, if it has two then it is likely 18 inches in length Brian and will have a mounting point at both ends, we call those instrument bed lathes those are more common in our own shop as we make parts a bit over the watch parts size.
      It is on the instrument length 18.00 inch length and above that a lathe begins to have the thread cutting ability and for that reason this is never found on the watchmaker bed lathe machines like the one has in the show.
      We watched a visit video of a guy that we also subscribe to that came by your shop discussed your hard work and your shop but until after he greeted the paws of the company boss Baily and that was a great interview the man did with you, we enjoyed it, he really wants that radial drill we think watch out Baily. • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  2 года назад

      Hi Bob, no is the quick answer but and as in life there is always that but moment.
      We have a goal; it is our museum that while we add to her pretty much each month, we are weak in the securing of the funds that would make that effort a better safe place nearer or own ending (SOMEDAY, no hurry there), so you can know we are making 2 of our own designed and machined in-house limited edition products to sale through our videos and website coming by this years end and our 30th anniversary Bob.
      That G. Boley we feel is great, we have a few gears to make for her from the master gears which we do have, they are critical in the lathe's importance.
      This lathe is only one of our machines and the supporting tools in our workshop Bob, we should make a video, well a series as there are too many tools for sharing our tools of the past soon to be 30 years (well coming up on May 03, 2023).
      We have a question for you?
      Why do you want this automatic machine?
      We would be interested in knowing that here as we are also in need of friends, and we like to know more about others like ourselves, those with interests in a common category Bob.
      We must admit in closing that this one-off G. Boley watchmaker lathe is near the top of our crown jewel (it is however not the top one) in the collection and that is why we should make more sharing videos as this might lead to making us a few new friends along the way, thank you for your interest and thank you for being here with us on this journey. Lance & Patrick.

      @@ActiveAtom hi, thanks for the reply! I’m finishing up a bs in mechanical engineering, and somehow I managed to get sucked into watch repair and watchmaking over the last few months. I’ll be looking for a lathe soon, and I’m fascinated by the screw chasing one because it’s a weird sort of hybrid between traditional watchmaker’s lathes and larger general purpose lathes. I’ve never seen a power feed on a watchmakers lathe, and I feel that it really adds to the machine’s versatility. I’m also in the process of modeling a watchmaker’s lathe, based on that style, and it would be great to have access to the screw chaser for reference. Is there any possibility you guys might take detailed photos of the parts?

      @@bobbobbington1132 Hi as well Bob, great to read you are joining the watchmaker world, and with a bs in mechanical engineering, that will go a long way in making your own path whatever path you pursue knowledge and application are the kings and queens in our world here. Two things will happen now that you are in our (older persons) opinion, you will become a tool and machine junkie as they say, though personally we enjoy the tool and machinery collecting that does come with gaining knowledge in both the running using and maintained and repairs of these fine machines and tools, so we are not junkies we are more care takers taking care of the vintage tools and machines as well as the newer ones not yet (though someday) cares takers of them as well.
      While we respect your liking the world's smallest known example of an automatic thread chasing lathe it is a very costly endeavor to pursue (not impossible) and it is likely why we have the only known micro example created.
      A wiser move is to seek the next model or size up that was produced by Schaublin made in Switzerland and there are others that made these larger ones.
      This lathe the G. Boley is not kept here, it is the only one so it is kept in a secure place to preserve its existence when we are not utilizing it, so for now the images and such are not available other then those in the video, sorry.
      Please stay in touch we are happy you are here with us as mentioned and please feel free to reach out at any time as we do work in the Workshop area each day though right now, we are uploading a new operating system to our 4 axis CNC micro milling machine in the Machine Shop area, gosh these two guys sure do have fun each day Bob, we really do hope this happiness for you equally. Hi Djahn, that took a while but yes, we do have an answer to our G. Boley lathe ages not exact (no one we know seems to really know G. Boley serial number dating) but here is what is true.
      These two machines we have and share within the video you notice are nickel plated, the tools produced from G. Boley in nickel are their first ones (from the beginning).
      G. Boley looks to have made the lathes later as painted, they began receiving a hammertone green, it is like a light silver green, in fact Djahn we are actually painting (powder coating) two G. Boley parts, they are early but non nickel specialty tail stocks that were painted in this hammertone green and we cannot wait to share these rare accessories with our viewers soon.
      Djahn, thank you for writing and thank you for sharing your question with us who knows a person may come along and have a better dating of G. Boley machines and accessories to share with us and we can then share with others here as well.

Lance, did you also re-plate those parts when you polished them, or were they already in such good shape?

    • @ActiveAtom
      @ActiveAtom  3 года назад +1

      Hi George, it is nice to read there are others that like the portable work table i.e. butchers block mounting method it. To us it is just that these older machines were made up of the parts application, choices of the machine, motor, lathe bed and such to be all separated like also the idler pulley and counter shaft setups to best allow the matching of the desired machine to the operators desires for optimum performance. It is great you went with the more desired even by these two 12.00" x 24.00" project board they are much easier to lift then the 18.00" x 24.00" ones and often times find a good place to display or store it, the smaller one like yours is.
      While we do do a mix of our own making for nickel plating the components when required this pair of particular machines were not in the shape needing that level of attention well the counter shaft main pulley is actually striped and ready for re-plating in nickel so there is that part being done an a watchmakers mini caliper as well vintage for the future museum however we have the ends of dust covers screws and some parts on a Derbyshire 850 instrument lathe headstock that are in line right now for nickel plating so we must mix some up use the tools that perform the best heating plates, circulators, lots of chemicals a pH meter reader to control that and such, this will deliver to us the best wear and we selected to do the satin finish as apposed to the popular chrome polished finish. Thank you again for stopping in, sharing your efforts from your own shop and for liking our work here. Lance & Patrick.

      Hello and welcome to Active Atom with is a GREAT question. We rebuild these machines here in house from the ground up having the actual parts materials and paints as well as that of the knowledge to perform these tasks for such a demanding and very precision machine as the Levin & Son name warrants. New and used Levin which is one of the 4 model or so we utilize here making parts for watch movements and timing devices each day it is a real joy when that time arrive as it had in the resent past 2 or 3 years to rebuild these fine machines for a coming 2 or 3 decades. These are used daily some are allotted to the museum, but we have in the coming May 03, 2023 when we turn 30 years old here at Active Atom have never sold but 1 draw bar for a Levin Lathe (that was to a friend of ours for many years) that we had made a half a dozen new ones for our vintage Levin open pulley style lathe to have and utilize for the next 20 to 30 years or so.
      Levin and Son, the company, has risen the prices too high for us and likely for many (especially these two desert hermits) others to afford as it, the company was sold to a new owner some years back that is when the prices and various other issues began to arise to our attention, see Levin & Son is located about 105 miles into Los Angles California from where it is we are located in the upper Mojave Desert in the state. Thank you, and hey, if given the chance and having the affordability we Patrick and Lance would buy Levin & Son the company tomorrow just so you know our thoughts Fumingzeus. Hi we totally understand I wantAvote.
      We value all comments, talk a lot we sure do, can we share why we talk so much, While Lance has in the CB Radio world he is titled the California Talker (hint hint) it is the official FCC radio license handle for us.
      We also live together Patrick and I best of friends since 1975 and we also live in a very rural high desert Southern California town named Yucca Valley in the south western end of the Mojave Desert surrounded by many gold and silver mines long past there production days, so you see, none the less, those tumble weeds, blowing sands and wild desert animals do not make for too much the conversation so we like to share via the social media outlets adorn the masses these days. We have been doing what it is we do here at Active Atom for 30 years after May 3rd arrived and has sense pasted. We only have this way to share and yes we sure do talk a lot as it is all we have and while it is a lot there is a volume on your computer as our videos and shows are very visual as well.
      We make these videos to cover all levels of rebuilding and assembling skills globally so we have to walk at a pace to cover those not at your level and perhaps others at even higher levels and make it work for all to allow our educational and show videos to be effective and that is the best answer we can share.
      We sure thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us and know this, we are proud you are here sharing and viewing our videos them and you matter.
      We hope to return uploading videos in the near future as we do enjoy making them and sharing more of our machinery and tool so many more to come even two products we are currently making to share and sale through our store at ActiveAtom.com in the coming year or so.
      Thank you again, Lance & Patrick.

      Well said and hi Stan, oh the spring as watchmakers we know the small parts all to well as clearly do you. We tried rubber absorbing mats below under and around our watchmaker desk and to no prevail missing those parts that fly off the workbench. The only thing the years have taught us comes from our mums, it is lean over the table when eating or when working with making small parts holding them movements assemblies or disassembles, that seems to be it. @@ActiveAtom Was going to suggest an electromagnet to capture those wayward tiny parts, but not all parts are ferritic. Put on my McGiver hat and came up with, are you ready for it?
      POLYESTER FIBERFILL!
      Fluff it out to resemble the 'snow illusion' used by retail merchants in displays around Christmas shopping season.
      Hear me out. Before you push the idea aside concerned that those tiny fibers will contaminate the workplace, I may have that figured out, too! In a room or an area distant from the workshop fluff up the fiberfill to an acceptable density in the shape of a large enough circular (or square, rectangular, etc) shape for the workbench and lightly spray with a fixative, such as Scotch spray adhesive or even hairspray. Let me know if something this simple sounds feasible.
      Aside from that idea, maybe an acrylic box large enough to accommodate the work with openings for your hands similar to a plastigrit blasting box used to delicately remove rust. Or even combine the two ideas?
      EDIT: Just hit me. An even better medium would be the 'spiderweb' decor used around Halloween! Longer fiber staple length may possibly eliminate the need to apply fixative! Damn! Sometimes I ask myself "Why didn't I think of that?".
      O.K., rant over.

      Hi Craig, hey we said hello over at Emma's new place. Thank you for watching and liking our video we had been gone for 18 months.
      We love these lathes, they are a pair of great German made examples, one from the early times at the G. Boley company and the other the rare one, that (guessing here) was likely an attempt to add features so sales would continue while watchmaking demand was likely dipping in the current economic times.
      Craig stay well, and hey in our next show out we offer up an American made precision and patriotic pair of items to one lucky winner, so hope you can come back and enter it is really easy no gimmick no cost to the winner what so ever and this will be our first ever giveaway. Boley tools and that is thousands of intricate components that have each been painstakingly (well we felt no pan we love each part of all of our assemblies here) refurbished but a bit of luck Jeff, these accessories and attachments were in great shape so we are thinking of calling that Part 3 the candy show because all of these tools are so sweet.
