  • Easy, almost no cost fix for a shifter that's binding on the lateral axis (through neutral). Try lubrication only first. Only apply heat if it's required. Exercise extreme caution when using a torch. Always have an suitable, serviceable, extinguisher at the ready. Do not perform this procedure if your inexperienced or indoors. Set the torch flame on low intensity.

Thank you for posting this. Years later the video is still helping people. I had the same issue on a 2009 SX4. I removed the battery and battery holder to get better access to the pin with a propane torch. Sprayed it with PB Blaster afterwards and now the shifter's lateral movement is 10x better.

Or what i did, open the top center of the hanger with a dremel with a cutting disc, for a good 1/4 , to discover and have access to the top of the pin. An assistant play with the shifter while you put penetrating oil and a good quantity of rust will come out by the opening you did. Repeat at least 20 time or until no more rust come out and shifter will end up be better than new (because pin is thinner than new, metal lost when rusted). Protect the opening with heavy grease or something like that. Sorry bad english.

Worked like a charm. I used a heat gun on high setting. Be sure to avoid melting the boots on the linkage nearby.

I have a suzuki sx4 6 shifter, to put the reverse it has problems sometimes and does not want to fit. but i have had 2 suzuki sx4. one 2008 sedan. and now I have the 2010 sportback. I see that the reverse problem is with the light cable. it won't turn on the reverse light and it's like something stumbles but I'm not sure. what you think?

Bought a 2007 sx4 brand new with the automatic transmission so far so good never had this problem. Can’t understand how anybody could drive a standard transmission these days unless you’re at the track. Except of course you’re in therapy for arm and leg exercise.🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙🚙

hey. in 1st, 2nd and 5th gear (no as much in 3rd, 4th) there is a fair bit of unwanted lateral play in the shifter. i fixed the worn bushings that connect the cables right under the gear knob. but there is still some unwanted play. caused on the other end (under the hood). is there a way to remedy it? thanks

Temporary fix😱...better removing cable end, and tapping out pin to clean up...Note in newer models there are 2 nylon bushes in housing so heating not a good idea😱
