  • Usapang Wika is a cultural documentary series featuring the major languages of the Philippines. The show aims to give the viewers a glimpse of the richness and depth of each language through the sharing of our respective experts as well as slice of life vignettes featuring the native speakers of each.
Today's episode features the language of the people from Pangasinan. Oftentimes referred to as Panggalatok or Pangasinense, the name of the language is the same as the name place-Pangasinan.

Dr. Flores failed to mention that Pangasinan (the language) is closely related to Ibaloi and the other southwestern Cordillera languages. The fact that southern Benguet hosts a clade of languages (Ibaloi, Kalanguya, Karao, etc.) strongly suggests that in the distant past a proto-Pangasinan language had branched off from this cluster to become the Pangasinan of today. Could it have been the other way around, that Pangasinan gave birth to Ibaloi and the others instead? Unlikely--languages tend to diffuse from high diversity to low diversity: thus from the southern Benguet group of languages to the unitary Pangasinan. Bear in mind too that geography plays a major part in the direction of language dispersion. In this case, the Agno River would have been followed by the first speakers of Pangasinan downriver (not upriver) from their highland homeland to the plains of Pangasinan where the Agno decants.

I thought the word Pangalatok came from a contraction of Pangasinan and balitok (gold). And it describes the inclination of most Pangasinan to reach for materialistic goals, hence a bit offensive to some.
