JVC M70 Restoration and Bluetooth Mod

- This is a JVC M70. So far I have restored 3 of them. This one came to me recently and it had no powering up issue. The radio had no sound, but the cassette reels spun when the buttons were pressed. It was a very strange and interesting condition.
I started with troubleshooting a power failure issue. Checking from the power transformer, replacing a fuse, clean all switches with contact cleaner. At some point I tried playing music with AUX in, and the sound came out from the speakers. However, even the volume was set up to the max, it was so small sound. Anyway, after I cleaned up all switches and controllers, I found out that pressing cassette button would send power to the amp and radio sound was on. In this situation, when I turn ON the main power switch, the radio sound went off. Very interesting. So I guessed that cassette deck power switch is only working switch, and the main power switch had something to do with this power frailer mystery. After cleaning the power switch witch was "leaf type switch", this mysterious power failure issue disappeared.
The next thing I found was that the cassette deck lost some parts. I ordered same cassette deck from Korea as a replacement. The arrived cassette deck's play/record head condition was really bad, so I used only necessary parts of it. After replacing parts and tested cassette deck, the auto stop feature did not work. So again, I replaced whole button mechanism. This time everything worked perfectly. In the film, I took apart cassette deck 2 times, however, to tell you the truth, I needed 5 times re-do for complete the cassette repair work. LOL.
I like M70, it is well built and well balanced machine. Enjoy the film.

Wow, quite an elaborate job. And a beautiful machine it is indeed. Love the bluetooth mod with backlight.
Hi, Albert. Long time no see! Thank you for the compliment on my work.
I don’t know how you do, you really are the best.
Thank you so much for restoring my Sharp M70
You are welcome, Pedro.
I was lucky when I found out the reason why the boombox did not power on. Anyway, keep bringing your beauties, I will take care of them for you!
PS: this is not Sharp, but JVC. The Sharp is on working right now. LOL
Pentru mine esti cel mai bun restaurator de electonice vintage ever!
Another great restoration Teddy. Amazing on how you fix them. Keep up the great work
Thank you Fransico for your compliment on my work.

You seem to be genius at restoring these classic early 80s boomboxes. How much would you charge to replace the tape head in my SHARP GF9191?

See, THIS is a boombox that is worth restoring!
Thank you for the comment.
Thank you, Master Teacher of radios!
Thank you for your compliment on my work!
this is a AWESOME boombox...... how in the world do you remember where everything goes once you had taken it apart ???? Talent you have !!
Thank you. And I answered how to putting back together or how I remember question on the other thread.
Teddy takes lots of pictures before he disassembles these boomboxes as a helpful reference so once a repair/restore is done, it makes it easier for him to re-assemble them and ensure everything is in the right place, working correctly. He also makes notes as he goes; this is handy when a service manual isn't available.
I've never had a boombox before. But always wanted a Lasonic TRC-931. But never found one. Regardless i'm getting a modern retro-style boombox that'll make me happy regardless. Great vid man! These things are coming back!
Hi, Menace. Thank you for the comment and sharing your memory of the old-school boombox. Great that you are going to get retro-style boombox. Enjoy your music!
Very nice Sir, your efforts are really admirable.

So much work! But worth it. Wow!
Thank you for your compliment on my work!
Nice work! I had the same problem with the power switch on my 1985 GE boombox.
Thank you for your compliment on my work. Great to hear you solved power switch issue. :-)
Teddy Hashee I have get it another spray. It’s acting up again. Now I have to turn it off and on again to get it working. I may try another spray. I was using CRC electronic cleaner.
If the cleaning won't work, you want to replace leaf switch since it has tendency not to work easily after long year.
Teddy Hashee It’s one of those cased switches. I had to spray in the gap between the shaft and casing then work the switch back and forth. I may have to try to get it apart to get to the contacts.
Teddy, you are a legend! I really find it funny that I can sit and watch your videos like it's a suspense thriller! I've watched ALL of your boombox video and look forward to the next ones. I read the comments too to learn about some of the details that I don't catch in the videos. There's one thing that I'm interested to know. What is it that you are polishing the center parts of the speakers with? You get them looking so shiny!
Thank you for your compliment on my work. About center parts of the speaker, I used rubbing alcohol, sometimes I use goo gone. Both work good, goo gone is much safer for any polish work than alcohol though. Thanks!
Thanks Teddy! I appreciate your reply. I was thinking that it was something like that. I don't want to damage my speakers. I'm trying to do a "Teddy Hashee" on my $2.45 GE 3-5286A. You're inspiring me to clean up these old monsters and get them purring again :) Thank you Sensei!
It will be a fun for you to restore GE boombox. By the way, you know the word "Sensei". Great!
Que genial trabajo!! Saludos desde Argentina!
Thank you for your compliment on my work!
Great job dude!
Thank you for your compliment!
really like your vids, what bluetooth device would you recommend for putting inside?
Nice repair and cleaning job. The product you give to the front, is it paint polish?
years ago I had a radio of the kind of a strange brand, which was missing the switching of the radio function. Basically, the radio only worked when the cassette recorder was on.
So they removed the selection switch and used cassette power switch for the power the amp. Interesting.
Are you still fixing and making boomboxs look brand new again
I had power issues and all sorts of functions not working until I sprayed some Deoxit on the power switch on my own M70, trouble is, it won't turn off!
You seem to know quite a lot about the topic, any insight into why these JVC / Victor boomboxes are worth so much compared to others from the era?
Are they just that high of quality comparatively? Nostalgia? The chrome aesthetic?
Can you make a video showing the audio equipment that you normally use? And explaining everything
Thank you Valentine for your comment. I will think about it.
years ago I received as a gift a radio of the kind in which the radio worked only if the PLAY button on the recorder was pressed.
Your boombox has a power switch problem. Either function switch ( you select tape, radio, etc..) or main power switch. As you are now using the cassette deck button for the main power switch, that means power supply as well as amp board, radio tuner board are all OK. Probably easy fix.
I know I'm late to the party but I hava a question - mine is playing normal for 2 mins and then the speed is increasing - I suspect a bad motor (or regulator) and I saw at least 2 type of motors on these machines MHI-5E2RDPB or MHI-5B2RVNB both are 12V DC but the PCB layouts are different, the first one have 3 ball joints the other one 8... I haven't opened mine yet but I want to know what replacement code should I use what to look for to order as I couldn't find none of these models available. Are they dual speed motors? Could you point me to the right direction? What motor brand /model can I put in there... Thanks!
Hi teddy very good job. What application do you use to record the head frequency? and how does it work? what frequency must it have to be right?
If you are talking about app I am using in the film to adjust the tape speed, it is called Tuner T1. I use A440 hz tape to adjust the speed. You need to create or buy any kind of tone adjustment tape. If you have a good speed tape deck, you can record A440 hz tone from youtube video. It does not have to be 440hz, any frequency test tape can be used with Tuner T1 app.
@@teddyhashee Thank you so much. You were very kind to answer me. I hope to see another wonderful work of yours as soon as possible.
Thank you!
hello teddy you're a myth, I follow you and you're inspiring me, I've started to restore old Boombox.
In fact, I wanted to ask you what products you use to clean and polish opaque and chromed plastics and Plexiglas.
thanks go on like this
First clean the entire body with mild detergent, use goo gone to clean more detail. For the silver color plastic, you want to you a little bit of stainless cleaner along with goo gone. Do not use to much stainless cleaner otherwise you will remove surface painting. Clear plastic lens, glass clean with rubbing alcohol, then polish it with plastic cleaner. Any type of plastic cleaner will help you to clean it. If there is a scratches you need to use water sand to remove it first, then polish it with plastic cleaner.
Teddy Hashee thanks

This video shows how I remove scratches with many kinds of cleaner.
Also in my boombox restoration video, I showed how to remove deep scratches using water sand paper.
The plastic cleaner and metal cleaner (stainless) is these one.

i have a little question i have reels from america this reels playing really slow on my decks is that a power issue the netherlands 230 50 herts usa 127 voltjes 60 herts also with vhs from usa i can t get out a good picture i have new neighbours the coming over from tampa and they give me this.
You need to change the power input selection from USA mode to European mode. If it does not have such a selecting switch, then you can not use it as you said the difference of the voltage and hz cycle. If you set it to European mode, then still it is showing slow speed, then you need to check the motor run capacitor. Replacing it will bring your R2R speed to the normal.
problems with the vhs are solved a ntsc to pal problem my vcr have no ntsc support and ntsc is the system in usa if i have it good. a prodeck jvc from my neighbour soleved that problem for the reel i search for a solit solution.
I should have you do the JVC RC550 I found in the trash. I only get extremely weak audio on FM and no cassette function. Deoxit helps a bit.
So you have your cute baby El Diablo with you. Enjoy your time to restore it! It worth to do the restoration on your own!!

What happened from 23:24 to 23:50 it made the click sounds how did you fix it ? Thank you
That's the sound from "Not working auto stop" problem. Later in the video you see that I removed push buttons from cassette deck and showed one of the parts was broken. That's parts will be pushed in order to REW or FF to stop. You can see I replaced with other buttons unit and auto-stop started working correctly.
VC RC M90-KING OF BOOMBOX!!!-
Thank you for the great info.

Hi, thank you for contacting me. I will reply to your email. Teddy
Hola a todos alguien sabe el valor del potenciometro del volumen del rcm70
Is there a way to change tape speed without having to completely open up everything?
Some type of the cassette deck has a hole in front of the motor and you can use tiny screw driver to adjust the motor speed. But most of the boombox, probably you need to open up the body in order to adjust the speed.
Some Sharp and Sony twin-cassette boomboxes have trim-pots on the board to adjust normal and/or high-speed; there are none on the back of the motor. Trim-pots on the back of the motor tend to be easier to adjust than those on a board as there is not much in the way but they are prone to drift when the temperature changes due to the motor spinning and creating heat which affects speed. Board trim-pots don't suffer this problem because they are generally further away from the motor.
** Back of the motor or on the board is where you should find some adjustment pot for tape speed, depending on the model. **
