stencil a t-shirt with a custom freezer paper stencil (2008)

- 2022 UPDATE: This tutorial was created in 2008 while making a t-shirt for a swap. I didn't have a mic at the time, so all instructions are in text during the video. This is still a super fun and easy way to create stencils if you don't have a Cricut or other cutting machine.
The song is "Vampire" by People in Planes. It was free to use on RUclips when I originally created this video. Sound isn't necessary, so please feel free to mute it if you'd like the song.
Freezer paper is usually found with plastic wrap, aluminum foil, etc. I buy it at my supermarket. You can also find it online. Sticky-backed vinyl or contact paper will also work.

omg thank you so much this has helped so much i have been looking for a way to make my breaking dawn shirt for this friday. you have been a great help thanks :)
Thank you for sharing this simple tutorial!
This particular paint washes really well. It does fade eventually, but it takes on a nice worn t-shirt look, not a cracked and fading sad stencil!
Have you tried mixing a bit of Odicoat with glitter and painting it on fabric for the holidays? Or using the glitter with a stencil?
I have not tried it with Odicoat, but that is a fun idea!
Oh sweet Jesus... should be called "how to ruin a t-shirt".
The music sucks big time.
Thank you so much! This is one of my older tutorials and it still surprises me when I get comments here. I love that it's been helpful to so many people!
Curly freezer paper...I do one of two things; if I need it right away, I iron it flat and let it cool. If I have time to wait for it, I cut it down to size and then stick it under my cutting mat and leave it there until I need it. If I still have trouble, I'll hold it until the printer takes it.
Thanks! I discovered the song here on RUclips and it's since become one of my favorites.
@emobboy94 Freezer Paper is the only name I know for it. Baking paper is not the same. Freezer paper has a light wax coating on one side. If you can't find that, you can also use regular paper or card stock and then use a temporary spray adhesive on the back to hold it in place while you stencil.
If you use the freezer paper, you can just iron the piece you cut out right into the center. That's my preferred method, but you can also make bridges from the main part of the letter, leaving a tiny sliver of freezer paper so the small piece stays attached to the rest of the stencil.
You can get the fabric paint at Hobby Lobby, Joanns or Michael's. You might be able to find it somewhere else, too, but that's where I got it. I think it cost about $4 a bottle, but one bottle goes a LONG way. Michael's has t-shirts on sale for $2 this week, too. Hope that helps!
I've never tried lacquer, so I can't answer that, but spray paint will definitely work. When you do that, make sure the only thing showing is the part you want to stencil to protect from overspray and you should only need one coat.
Freezer paper has a wax on the back that temporarily sticks to the fabric when you iron it on. You can use paper or card, but you have to be really, really careful or use temp spray adhesive.
Sketch book paper won't stick like freezer paper will. Freezer paper has wax on the back, so ironing with a warm iron creates a temporary bond, which is what makes it an excellent choice for stenciling.
I think freezer film is closer to plastic wrap. Freezer paper is paper with a thin plastic coating on one side that will temporarily stick to fabric when ironed. Hope that helps!
It usually found with the aluminum foil and plastic wrap at the supermarket. It has a wax back side that will temporarily stick to fabric when ironed on. I hope that helps!
@XRadiokillaX I prefer Jacquard textile paints, but there are lots of good inexpensive paints, too. Tulip makes a soft, brush on paint that works really well.
@Xx0hemgeexX You can, but it won't keep the paint from bleeding like freezer paper does. Freezer paper has wax on the back, so it sticks when you iron it on.
I've found that they wash very well. The paint does soften and fade a little with time, so if that's something you don't want, I'd suggest air drying yours.
Latex paint should work okay, but I haven't tried it. Even acrylic craft paint will work in a pinch. Freezer paper works great as a stencil guide. :)
Just wanted to let you know, I work in a craft store, and I direct people to your video ALL THE TIME when they want to do just a few shirts. (If they want to do more than two or three I tell them to get the screen printing stuff) but I love love LOVE this for just a few shirts! But I do have to ask, (because I haven't figured it out yet) How did you get the freezer paper to stay flat?!?! When I do it it stay's curled, and I have to tape it to card stock to send it through the printer!
If you're really careful, you can usually get 2 or 3 uses from one stencil. If you want to do that, I'd recommend skipping the glitter.
Freezer paper has wax on the back and will stick when you iron it. It peels right off when you're done. Good luck with your stenciling!
@stevevillanueva No, not really, but if i you need to see through, it you can use a light box or hold it up to a window or light.
This is exactly what I was looking for! The only bummer is now I don't have any requests for your TTMT. Maybe something will come to mind eventually.
This tutorial was brilliant! The music made the whole thing! I was jammin'. :D
that is wicked cool as!
where exactly would you buy freezer paper? is it from a craft store or a supermarket or something?
and thanks so much for the tutorial, the shirt looks ah-mazing:)
im so gonna make one of these:)
cept team jake lol.
thanks,
xx
@itsmarshmallowz Yep, I do that, too. This one just happened to be for someone else and it was easiest done in Photoshop.
@DeeDank It will fade some over time, but I have shirts that I stenciled two or three years ago and they still look great!
@kbranders I put it directly into the printer. My printer is pretty picky, so I feed it through a single piece at a time.
I actually prefer not to use bridges at all and only showed A as an example for those that might prefer to use them.
What an incredible tutorial!!! The only thing I can't figure out is how the plastic from the freezer paper doesn't leave a mark on the shirt. Guess I'll figure it out, because I'm doing this PRONTO!!!
I can't tell you why it doesn't, but I've never had a problem and I've made oodles of stuff with this technique!
Freezer paper is available in most supermarkets. Check where the aluminum foil, wax paper and stuff like that is.
Thankyou, this really helps alot!!
My last attempt at a Cullen Crest shirt failed epicly because everything kept moving, but the freezer paper is sure to help.
Thanks again!
@dimebagcfh I get mine from my local grocery store. It's usually where you find the saran wrap, foil and such.
@dimebagcfh Yes, it says freezer paper. It comes on a roll...and Walmart should have it. Good luck!
I get mine at Hobby Lobby, but you can also order it online. Just search for "Poly Flake Glitter."
Oh thats perfect! I'm so addicted to that poly flake glitter I've always wondered how I could stick it on my clothes.. hmm.. the possibilities!
Wow, thanks! I'm always thrilled to hear that any tutorial I've worked on is helpful. Good luck with your stenciling!
Hum, well, give it another try. It came on right away for me. I hope it works for you this time!
You can find them at any craft or hobby store, hardware stores and sometimes the supermarket. :)
some people who stencil their t shirts make it look really simple and kind of boring but you with the glitter made it look pro.
sory to bother you, but where do you get the fabric paint?? how much does it cost?
i really wanna make it for tomorrow..
did you put the freezer paper directly in the printer or did you print the design then trace onto the freezer paper?
did you put the freezer paper directly in the printer or did you print the design then trace onto the freezer paper?
If you're really careful, you can usually get two or three shirts out of one stencil.
@sagalmibagal As long as you use acrylic or fabric paint, yes, absolutely washable!
@DYLZA171 Oh gosh, I don't know about that, but I did have fun making it. Thanks!
Thanks for the tut, I found it on a crafty website as a reference for help. You sure took the mystery out of the island thing.
@VisneCrew2009 This particular color was Crimson Red Lumiere paint by Jacquard.
You YT’ers do not consider how annoying your music could be to potential subscribers 👎🏽 totally hated this video because of the music!
@buchsdrn Thanks! I find it to be kind of zen once I get started. Lots of fun!
My pleasure! I'm still working on my shirt for Friday, too. Can't wait!
Will the glitter wash off if you just put it on the paint or do you need to use fabric glue?
@whosTryal you don't have to, but it will help the paint last longer
I hope you can get your hands on some so you can make yourself one!
how much is the typical roll of freezer paper? Im very interested in stenciling now
You put the plastic side to the fabric and iron the paper side.
@XRadiokillaX Not a thing if you use good paint. I've got a t-shirt I stenciled in 2007 and it still looks perfect!
this isn't working for me. the screen is black and it says 0:00/0:00 in the corner.
well, thanks again !!! Can't wait to try this out. You make it look easy.
YAY!
That's one of my favorites of all the stencils I've done. I really hope he likes it...and you know *cough* friends of sewhooked challenges... Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...
You can find it at the grocery store near the aluminum foil.
out of all how to make your own t-shirt vids this is the best well done
google "twilight crafts" ...we have a group on livejournal!
Thanks! Any excuse to add a little sparkle to a project!
Is there an alternative to freezer paper, such as maybe card stock?
The shiny side. It'll temporarily stick to the tee.
What happens if you wash it?
Will the paint come off or fade?
I hope you do! It's a really fun technique to use.
argh.. i wana make it, but i don't have the materials.....
WOW, that is really well done. Wish I had the patience.
it should be with the aluminum foil at any grocery store
Thanks, I hope you do try it, it's lots of fun!
wow! is it washer and dryer safe? good job btw
=^.^=
Thanks for uploading glad I watch this the only method I've ever seen was using spray paint and I was kind of leery about that and how intoxicating it could be with the fumes i've already started using three dimensional paint and experimenting with my daughter shirts so I know how paint can be easier then spray paint maybe possibly any rate have a good day
amber fords
Hmm, will the glitter come off after a few wash or something?
The music is very distracting.
@909Barber It's Vampire by People In Planes.
i found this while looking for a tutorial and this video is such a time capsule. the fact that it's a twilight t-shirt adds so much to the vibe. i love this, thank you
Ah, thank you! This is definitely a Way Back When video. ♥
@iloveAn5gellica Awesome, have fun with it!
I hope you do, it's easy, cheap and pretty!
if you make a tshirt like that, can you wash it?
Yep, this was made for a Twilight swap.
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
this helps a lot!!!

It's "Vampire" by People In Planes.
It's Vampire by People In Planes.
matte means the one that not shining...
so is the shiny side facing up or down?
I´ve never heard of it, but thanks :)
what kind of colour are you using ?
wow that was the best =) i love it!
where do you get the freezer paper??
@mouselebee I used a #11. :)
Great idea, and I love the song! :)
@NoemieLeigh My pleasure!
What type of paper did you use?
@jentan80 You know, I have been thinking about redoing this video with voice instead of text. I wasn't doing TTMT when I posted this and hadn't done a voice video yet. Might be something for the future!
Oh no, not the same! Freezer paper is matte on one side and has a plastic finish on the other that will temporarily stick when you iron it. It's usually with the aluminum, wax paper and such at the grocery store. You can also find it in sheets at craft and fabric stores, but it's more expensive that way.
@MrsAllyBieber143 Oh gosh, it's been so long ago, I don't remember! You can get the stencil for free on my website, Sewhooked. Look under free - crafts - stencils. Hope that helps!
