Hey guys, this is a video I didn't want to have to make. But the fact of the matter is the Australian Broadcasting Corporation or the ABC. Decided it was acceptable and proper to air a documentary sharing the "Russian side of the conflict". The Documentary in question is "Ukraine's War: The Other Side" and it has caused an international incident between Australia and Ukraine to the extent that the Ukrainian ambassador requested a meeting to discuss the issue. The ABC has not only not backed down on this issue but publicly defended the documentary and their decision to air it. Now I have no problems as such with a documentary reviewing the Russian perspective of the conflict, however the journalism displayed in this documentary was no journalism at all. It was a propaganda sob story where the only narrative shared was that of the Kremlin''s while both the presenter and the editing of the documentary attempt to present a sympathetic view of the Russian forces currently waging their illegal war in Ukraine. So. I am having my say on it and dismantling it. Support the Channel on Patreon: www.patreon.com/Animarchy
Seriously? Don't pay the teachers, don't pay the healthcare, don't pay for the power grid/sewage/roads, don't pay the army and on and on and on because four corners got one wrong??? Are you really that stupid? Yes the ABC should be ashamed but have you any actual idea how a country/tax is run??????? Or why?????
Blah blah, "freedom", "democracy". Like you do have them. Let's see what kind of freedom is in Ukraine. Why people in Russia has more freedom? Who are Ukrainian government depended on almost 100%? Can they be held accountable to the Ukrainian people? Is the West really so kind so it helps Ukraine just enough to not loose and not win? How is it possible that on the greatest country in the world the choice is between two very very old man. One of them at least even with dementia. Look at the West current "culture". Or may I say politics on culture. There is a reason why so many people prefer more or less honest authoritarian and not really great and not so kind Putin because the West elites are no better or even worse since they have more power. It is not Putin or his propaganda, but the West elites and Media that makes him look not so bad.
I think the Australians who are tired of the narrative that Ukraine has a chance to win would be happy to see the other side. Also it matters more as they are still alive and have power in the nation
Not what he said at all you either havent watched this documentary at all. I highly doubt you would start accusing a bunch of soldiers of war crimes while in there camp with no protection
@@charliederrick1583Then what is the purpose of this documentary. Whats the purpose if he doesnt ask the important questions and just accepts whatever they say
@@ColdMarty To me, a pro-Ukrainian, it provides an unfiltered representation of Russian soldiers in Ukraine. While Russian media would not be able to release anything more than pro-Russian propaganda from these soldiers, this reporter can go in, get answers, and leave without his work being censored. It allows for the expression of the views of that soldier who saw through the propaganda, while at the same time showing that there are plenty of soldiers who are blinded by such propaganda. While watching the documentary prior to this video, I never really stopped to think what the reporter was going for and instead took the documentary as it was shown.
@overlord6455 I haven't watched the video so yet, but I hope we can see more do domentaries like these interviewing the soldiers of both sides on the frontlines while staying neutral. Man, it's sad though.
I think it is very important to point out the film's title here: "Ukraine's War" - its not "The War in Ukraine" or "The War against Ukraine", its Ukraine's War. This is very deliberate. The apostrophe and 's' are a possessive in grammatical terms, indicating a relation of possession, of ownership. It openly implicates that Ukraine, not Russia, started the war or has direct responsibility for it... Now, if that isn't Kremlin propaganda, I don't know what is!
Totally agree and thank you 🙏❤️ any arguments about naming of wars to support the title of this documentary are illegitimate for the reasons you’ve started. Pure propaganda yet westerners are willing to debate it..?? Why are people so blind?
Why was then Ukraine borrowing loans to spend on their army?and why are the same people who fought against Ukraine, storming Ukrainian cities.and how they're still the most corrupt in Europe.

I say we start calling WW2 the 3rd Sino-Japanise war because that was the first shots fired in what eventually became part if WW2. Note I may be wrong about the Japanese invasion of china actually being the first conflict in WW2...

Hearing this from Americans (or assuming AUS/UK/CAN) is beyond ridiculous. Idk how old you are but there’s been nonstop “the poor troops did nothing it’s just the government/they didn’t know what they were doing” etc apologist content here for decades despite even more brutal crimes being committed. 90% of Movies here centered around Vietnam are based around this. @@SanctusPaulus1962 “20-60” years ago. This is very much still the case today. I have hardly ever seen anyone call Iraq/Afghan vets murders or Nazis and when they have it’s always been met with extremely fierce criticism and outright disgust. The point here is that it is the same group of people. It’s largely neoliberal/neoconservative types who celebrate our military and it’s actions, but act outraged and disgusted now when they see the same thing being done by another nation. It’s the same hyperbolic nonsense. If you want to take a pragmatic viewpoint, that you support actions that benefit your own nations and it’s Allies and oppose those of your enemies thats completely rational. But the ridiculousness of praising militarism, intervention or the complete destruction of peoples homes only to turn around and cry and scream using exaggerated language about Nazis, brutality etc the second it’s done by someone else is ridiculous, have some level of integrity or at least self-awareness, it’s embarrassing to watch.
I disagree and have several other productions I am currently pitching to ABC; "Josef Mengele: Man Behind the Smile", "Stalin and the Gang: Champions of the People", and "Pol Pot: Misunderstood Genius." I also have some crackin' ideas for kid's educational television - "Dear Adolf: A Child's Guide to Our Fuhrer", "Christmas with Uncle Beria", and "Happy Times with Kim Jong Un." I hope to hear back soon from the network.
You have my vote for "Christmas with Uncle Beria". ABC will eat it right up along with "Cooking with Idi Amin". Better hurry before the BBC digs "Around Europe with the SS" out of their archives.
Aktchyually, i kind of doubt directors of ABC, Australian goverment or commisioners knew what they were doing by funding this propaganda piece. I don't know who commisioned it, but here's a thing. Russia - meaning Kremlin's Roskomnadzor and other psyop offices - has infiltrated most big "western" institutions to cause as much subversion to the "western" public opinions as possible. If they had literal FSB agents interfering in US elections and sponsored GOP extremist fanclub trough sanctioned Kremlin's henchmen (ex.g. Konstantin Nikolayev, look up his connection to M. Johnson, M. Flynn etc.), i'm not at all surprised they compromised a few apparent journalists in ABC. You just cannot go to Russian-occupied territories and ask, say or show whatever you want. You're highly vetted and pre-approved just like absolutely everything that comes out from that side. It's an entire seperate 3rd branch of "Russian propaganda". They know how effective it is for pulling the wool over ignorant westerners' eyes. Everything coming out of Donbas since 2014 has been this way and i could list many examples, but won't do that courtesy here. This is not journalism, these are their strongest weapons of this hybrid-war. They're an integral part of subversive black-propaganda machine aimed at dividing and destabilising all democratic anglophone countries. I've seen exerts of this job even on Russia's domestic branch of wartime propaganda used with great effect. The "westerners" aiding them, like these producers, should be treated similar to Nazi-collaborators during WW2 and prosecuted. I'll actualy campaign and do everything in my small powers that they will have to answer for becoming traitors under the law of ICC or where applicable eventually. If he was from my own Eastern European country, he'd face criminal charges immediately and either do time or would be exiled to Russia. This is a info-war not only ON Ukraine, but on all democracies and rules-based world order. It's not physical - yet - as Russia cannot afford to expand for now. The situation is more screwed than most people realise. History will tell how well we deal with it.
The ABC has been one of the few places where you can usually get a mostly balanced and most un-biased view of things in Oz - the fact that it gets regularly criticised by both sides of politics for being biased and partisan is usually enough to be sure its ok. That doesn't mean it makes mistakes or can get tricked - many years ago it ran a "documentary" called The Great Climate Change Swindle, and the Q&A session afterwards (moderated by Tony Jones) that was very much against the theory of climate change. It was later discovered that the panel and audience of the session had been stacked. Interestingly, ABC's version of Q&A started about a year later, also hosted by Tony Jones...which then made the...decision...to let Zaky Mallah ask a question...
Murdoch is a modern Midas and anti-Midas in one person. Former, as anything he touches turns Gold... for himself. And latter, because whatever he touched turns into Sh*t for everyone else.
I’m disgusted that the ABC aired this, not only that they used the shield of Four Corners, a brand that USUALLY presents some of the best journalism in the country. It’s disappointing and depressing.
That’s the worst part, you expect this from some sectors of the Australian media, like any free country, but to see it from 4Corners is just sad. For the non-Australians out there, this is like Walter Cronkite embedding with the USSR and saying the sack of Budapest was justified and moral.
Or maybe... things are not as they have be presented to you and you are reacting negatively to your biases not being reinforced by a otherwise trusted source.

I love the Night Lords patch at 23:59 on the guy. A space marine chapter from warhammer 40k, linked to torture, genocide and general terrorization of people to the utmost extent.
So the national broadcaster removed any method of complaint about one of its programmes? That's insane and should be illegal. Here in the UK, the BBC gets a lot of things wrong, but to its credit, it will always allow complaint and is generally open about the complaints it does receive. I mean, that's probably through requirement than desire, but still, very important.
Technically, we still have the Ombudsman to complaint to, and the comments being turned off is just standard for all Australian media networks for some reason. Granted though, the fact that this story was even published in the first place is problematic. Also Media Watch might have a go at it, just putting that out there. Edit: Just remembered that Planet America still has it's comments open for some reason, so maybe the ABC is blocking criticism?
On the subject of looking at the other side of the war, you can try to see things from the perpective of an agressor whilst acknowledging there still in the wrong. Vice Media did a video on the charlottesville rally where the headliners talked to the cameras and they didn't present them as just good people fighting for what they believe in. I am sick and tired of people pretending that choosing to see things from someone elses perspective means treating them as good eggs who didn't do a thing wrong, and the fact that the abc had the gall to portray its pro-putin propaganda as just hearing everyone else is ridicolous.
Unfortunately there were plenty of people back then who still backed the Axis, or at least parts of it before we entered the war and during it. It wasn't until either 44 or 45 that some of the organized groups had the hammer come down but even then they left their weeds to remain and fester.
If we had social media now, people would still be denying the Holocaust except If it was modern times they could get away with saying it because we have AI generated images. It just keeps getting worse 😢
I wonder how different their supposed documentary would be if they were embedded with the conscripts and penal battalions instead of hyper loyal volunteer and professional divisions.
I mean you could argue they wouldn't allow it because "it would compromise military operations", like what? We're not asking what they're going to do next, we're asking why they're here.
Penal guy: “What’s not to like? If I survive I go free. If I die I die. Conscript: *Playing Helldivers 2 back in St. Petersburg because he hasn’t been called up yet* Russia only called up reservists for the front, which since Russia already has conscription even in peacetime, they are plentiful.
honestly i don't mind the idea of seeing the "Russian side" of the war in ukraine to better understand the mindset but you should also measure it with facts, if a Russian interpretation is blatantly untrue, have a moment where you correct it
Yes.. I can't say I trust the Russian government when I don't trust any government either. But I wish all soldiers can return to their homes. If you're going to fight, make no complications about it.
There’s a massive difference between between filmmaking and journalism. I haven’t seen anything resembling journalism here and it’s very disappointing that the ABC presented it as it did. “Hey mate, did you commit war crimes?” “Nah, not me mate.” “Seems legit. Carry on.”
Just in case you still weren't convinced the Russians are cartoonishly evil, the guy speaking at 23:50 is wearing what appears to be a Night Lords patch. For those unfamiliar with Warhammer 40k lore; the Night Lords are a space marine legion who specialize in terror tactics, torture and war crimes in general. They are the guys you send when you want make an example of someone. And when I say that they specialize in terror tactics, I don't mean like Al-Qaeda, I mean they are a group of literal serial killers who are recruited from a young age specifically for their sadistic and murderous tendencies. They follow no creed and believe in no god. They kill and torture simply for the thrill of it. Their MO when taking over planet is to brutalize the inhabitants of a large city and then broadcast their crimes over the entire world for everyone to see, hoping to scare the rest of the populace into surrender. There are few fates worse then being captured alive by the them and considering the setting we're talking about, that's saying something. However, unlike most other space marines who care about things like courage and honor and willingly seek out strong opponents, the Night Lords couldn't care less about honor and only fight opponents weaker then them and they never pick fights they know they can't win. In other words, they will specifically search for poorly defended civilian settlements to sack and brutalize and then piss themselves and run the second another space marine chapter shows up or anybody that might have a slight chance of being an actual challenge. They are basically the only canon space marines who are cowards and have no redeeming qualities. All in all definitely not a faction you should be idolizing as a soldier in any war, especially if you are in a documentary about how you're actually the misunderstood good guys, it's just not a good look. I get that Warhammer 40k is big in Russia and he could just be larping and didn't put much thought into it, maybe he doesn't even know what that patch means. But considering the staggering amount of confirmed war crimes committed by the Russians, I doubt it.
And here I've been thinking of Russia as an incompetent version of the World Eaters. But alas, THEY believe in a god, one who supports them (usually). Can we get the Ukrainians to start wearing Salamanders patches? I think it'd be a nice little psyop.
@@Fluffinator129 About the only Astartes Chapter patch I'd give someone some leeway over is either the Ultramarines for being bland but okay, or the Salamanders. Sure, the Salamanders aren't the greatest at times, but they also seem to give a genuine fuck about regular civilians. Though if I saw a Russian soldier wearing it, I'd laugh.
I couldn't tell you where I've seen Russian troops wearing that patch before but I've definitely seen some Russian troops wearing a similar patch, may just be a unit patch that happens to look like the Night Lords symbol. However a symbol of similar irony for me is that I've heard of Russian Troops (Wagnerites, I believe) wearing the symbol of the Spartan Rangers from the Metro 2033 series, you know, a game series made by Ukrainians. The Rangers in 2033 are supposed to represent the finest soldiers in the Metro, men of honor for whom no sacrifice is too great. Doesn't really represent Wanker Group if you ask me.
The perfect example of how not to do journalism. I personally think there is actually a limited amout of useful knowledge to be gained in terms of how hard the soldiers actually believe in party line. But having an actual "guide" tell the soldiers what to say defeats the point. The nothing burger questions arent helping either. PS: Can someone tell me where the "do you feel save" clip comes from?
Nothing says democracy like having a political officer or a helpful KGB agent around to remind people how to think. Kind of like having masked, armed guards around the voting boots. "Generation Kill" - good book, good series. Some of the actors play themselves and it goes for realism with a dose of insanity... sorry, just war. Say hi to Mish from me.
Australia is a puppet economy of the US, China and the corporate elite. We can’t even vote for our own prime minister, and besides the governor general can terminate the PM at any time they want if they don’t like them.
It doesn't surprise me most Donetsk and Luhansk citizens don't want the Russians there. From what I've heard, the rebellion in the Donbas has pretty much exactly fit the definition of a military filibuster. Where private citizens of a completely different country entirely move into a region, and then declare themselves and the region in open rebellion of the country the region is a part of, and petition their home country for military aid. This kind of thing should be very familiar to the Latin Americans among us. It happened in Baja California in 1853 with an American called William Walker. Not to mention a dozen other times people have pulled that stunt in American History.
"Neutral" observers can't understand what it's like to spend hours on Spaces, trying to distract a Ukrainian family's children from the air raid sirens, or to rage donate that day's lunch budget to buying a few bullets for Team Yuri's snipers. The documentary clearly does not try to paint the Russian army as "clean" by any means. The Spetsnaz and milblogger interviews show that there is no shortage of awful men in the Russian army. More accurately, this documentary presents the human side of soldiers while also showing that there are many Russian soldiers blinded and misled by propaganda. As always in something as big as war, there is plenty of nuance, and I would argue that this documentary is pretty good at showing the variety of personal justifications, opinions, and lives of soldiers among the Russian army, whether the journalist intended to or not.

Stuff like this pisses me off so much, the Russo-Ukrainian War is more cut and dry than most. If Russia leaves, the war ends. What does need an actual nuanced review, particularly by someone with a backbone, is the Israeli-Hamas war. Far more complicated, and most people do tend to ignore its complexities in favour of blindly supporting Gaza. By that I mean they not only protest in favour of providing much-needed aid to civilian victims who have no Hamas affiliations but support the Hamas regime itself. Netenyahu shares much with Putin, and is a reprehensible fuckpuppet, but he only has single digit support among all Israeli voters, which includes two million Palestinian citizens of Israel. Unlike Ukraine, Hamas actually initiated hostilities and engaged in real tangible genocide that was as blatantly evil as the massacre at Bucha and elsewhere. Unlike Ukraine, Hamas has no interest in lasting peace or even an end to hostilities, and the primary reason why civilian casualties are so high is due to Hamas bases being purposefully placed under Hospitals, Schools and public service buildings to deter reprisals. If the IDF leaves Gaza with Hamas still in charge, the attacks will simply continue and more Israeli and Palestinian civilians will die needlessly. If the IDF wipes out Hamas, yet another terror organization will emerge from the power vacuum like its predecessor, the PLO. No easy options, and very much in need of a thorough analysis.
Agree with most of your points. However: i no longer trust the IDF claims on bunkers below hospitals. If only because the one time they promised to show overwhelming proof of a command centre running most of Gaza, all they found after 3 days was a small closet with 3 pc’s, a roster list for nurse shifts and 2 AK-47’s that may or may not have been planted by themself. Regardless: if Hamas places military targets under human shield, then if I remember correctly the IDF still has a duty to weigh the causalities against military value. And even the Americans are now publicly saying they are not making that measurement properly. When even the USA thinks your Air Force is doing too much collateral damage, your doing something wrong. If only because the civilian impact of the IDF will likely strengthen Hamas, as part of terrorism 101: the more civilians you hurt the more rebellion soldiers you create for the opposing side. And Hamas absolutely does not deserve any extra recruitment

We have a moral imperative to assume that every country that lacks anything even approaching freedom of speech is lying, at all times, and about everything. Only countries that allow open criticism can operate in good faith. Every interview with people from autocrat countries should start with the interviewer saying outright, "this interview is being done with the assumption everything you say is some form of lie." Every time someone from an autocratic power speaks to the outside world, it needs to be done with the understanding that their country has cost them something others consider a fundamental right.
So we are to assume that Australia is lying? you know cause we have no guarantee to freedom of speech in our constitution, in fact we have several laws in place that can actual impede on freedom of speech.

Yes, essentially. It's your argument to win that without clearly identifying Press insignia and them being present on the front line in the same uniform or equipment as the opposition you were engaging a legitimate target to your knowledge.
Keep bringing this to the public. Dont give up dont ever stop until you made a difference. Make noise. A very loud noise until everyone hears and you made a difference. A positive difference in the world.
One important thing I want to point out as somebody who went to film school. A "journalist" with russian colours approaches civilians on the occupied side and with armed russian henchmen on his side pushes the camera in the faces of the civilians breaks every ethical rule in documentary film-making. The context was life-threatening for the civilians, by not saying what they think the russian side expects them to say could mean death for them. This embedded "journalist" aided war criminals and I am seriously saying he should lose all of his credentials, his job, and I think his freedom too for this.
Animarcky you are absolutely correct and not looking to deep into the title. Most people will never watch this documentary but if they see anything it will be the title that will take a large amount of the memory space. It taints the well from the get go.
@@brianmead7556 This war is not about politics, bot. We support Ukraine out of national self-interest and for the defence of international law. Russia stands in opposition to those things. They are our enemy. Thus there are no reason to listen to them.
"What would make Animarchy post a 40 minute rant? ...Oh ya, that would do it." ABC should apologize for being duped into being a Kremlin propagandist and retract that 'documentary'.
People are so caught up with “you have to have empathy. You have to walk a mile in their shoes before you can judge them” nowadays that they refuse to believe that there are truly right and wrong sides in some wars, such as WW2. I spent an entire day telling people that the Wehrmacht were actual Nazis and shouldn’t be respected for their “courage” and “sacrifice” as many of these people were saying. These people argued however that US and British troops committed some war crimes too, so there was no right or wrong side.😑 I wanted to wall pizza myself just trying to comprehend how a functional human could come to the conclusion that a few allied troops executing POW’s equates to the literal Holocaust, therefore there was no good or bad side. But this is the same logic that leads to people excusing Russian war crimes today, saying “well Ukraine’s done some bad stuff too, there really is no good or bad side, both sides are just victims of their politics”. Despite it being very clear to any normal person that Russia invading their neighbor who posed no threat to them makes them the bad ones, along with the many atrocities they’ve committed like in Bucha. It’s disgusting. Not to mention the amount of castrations, rapes, and beheadings I’ve seen them do as well all over the lines. Reddit’s a scary place.
Ironic that you site anti-Wehrmacht conversations while your defending Ukraine, thouse fuckers are trying to turn some it's worst offenders into national heroes.
in late 1980's Soviet officials allowed american documentary film group to tag along soviet troops fighting in Afghanistan, the documentary that was made was called "Afghan The Soviet Experience". I think it's still avaible in YT somewhere. And it was less of a propaganda piece than this "documentary".
I am surprised that the Australian ABC put this shit on air. I used to watch some of their documentaries on youtube because they were good. Now I have to stop subscribing to them. And I have even fewer places to watch documentaries.
Please note that in the USA, UK, etc., trials of war criminals, i.e. monsters that appear in every army, are held quite often. What's more, these trials can catch up with the perpetrator years later. This doesn't happen in Russia. Trials of those responsible for the murders are never held. There, being a war criminal not only goes unpunished, but is even encouraged. In total, for about 80 years after the war, the Russians not only did not distance themselves from the criminal system as the Germans did, not only do the monuments of Stalin and Kalinin (responsible for Katyn) still stand, but they also proudly use the equivalent of the Nazi flag, i.e. the hammer and sickle red rag. The symbol of tens of millions of victims. There is no reflection in Russia about the crimes they committed. There is only pride.
Mainstream media lives in an alternative dimension to the public. And we’ve become wise to their lies and fake news, they can only trick your boomer grandparents now.
Jeez, this really is like the Tucker interview but government sponsored, what the hell Australia? (The government, I’m sure most aussies can see this for the bs that it is.)
Modern journalism has devolved into self aggrandisement of journalists. With some notable exceptions, most modern journalists are doing what they do to promote themselves and consequently their careers. You see it in the newspapers- a thumbnail portrait of the journalist writing the story. Why do the readers need to know what the journalist writing the piece looks like? Hmm.. This bloke is doing this because no other reputable journalist would do such a thing but - hey! Look at ME in my flak jacket and combat helmet. Despicable careerism. Such a shame that ‘journalists’ have sunk their morality so low for their heightened profile. I really hope this backfires on this person. He is either (a) gullible (b) grasping or (c) a Russian propagandist. For shame.
And we have real journalists like Seymour Hersh being attacked and Juian Assange rotting in prison. If you didn't think media is a propaganda machine, it's clear now.
I'd like to add that both my parents served during WW2, Dad in the Navy and Mum in the WRAN, and if they could see our national broadcaster airing this, they would both be disgusted.
Maybe Australian ABC is following the playbook of the Washington Post- articles written by enablers for Trump get the most engagement by outraged subscribers. Does someone at ABC think that whatever gets the most engagement is the way to go?

I think it is very important to point out the film's title here: "Ukraine's War" - its not "The War in Ukraine" or "The War against Ukraine", its Ukraine's War. This is very deliberate.

Thanks, Oz.

Wow, he actually was! At least it wasn't Emperor's Children I guess.
And here I've been thinking of Russia as an incompetent version of the World Eaters.

@@Fluffinator129 About the only Astartes Chapter patch I'd give someone some leeway over is either the Ultramarines for being bland but okay, or the Salamanders.

@@56bturn I see your point and raise you Lamenters

But see, Hamas = Muslim = too dumb to know better.
