The recent escalation in hostilities in Ukraine has put at least 7.5 million children in grave danger of physical harm, severe emotional distress, and displacement. Save the Children have been in Ukraine since 2014, and are on the ground near the Ukrainian border providing people with life-saving assistance as they flee the conflict. Please donate, every little bit counts.
This is Putin’s war and to understand it you have to look at the story Putin tells himself and the Russian people that helped justify this invasion. In this video I explore Putin’s motive and make the case that Russia has already lost this war.

A friend of mine was trapped in Kyiv and slept in air-raid shelters and after days, with a lot of luck, made it to Hungary and back to Germany. We were worried sick and what she told us was just disturbing. My mother has friends who are Polish by birth and their relatives still live in the villages on the Ukrainian border and there is also pure fear. Polish TV shows the full extent and misery of the poor refugees - in Germany you see much less of it at least on TV, my mother visited her friends, and they translated the TV program into German and all the people in the living room were crying. Half of us were also once part of the Warsaw Pact (GDR), we are also terribly worried.
We are collecting clothes and food, many are signing up on lists and offering housing for refugees, some of my friends are travelling to the border region to help despite the horrendous gas prices (equivalent to $8.40 per gallon currently, diesel even more!). We need to meet this insane clown in Russia with full force. And always keep in mind: This is Putin's war, not the war of all Russians! Here, Russian migrants (of which there are many in Germany) are already being hostile and threatened in the worst way. That makes me sad.

I just question two things in this video:
One - the idea that Putin cares about what Russians and Ukrainians think. Public opinion in Russia and in dictatorships simply doesn't have the same power that it has in the West. It will have some effect on the way he conducts things but in the end, he will continue with his ideas and his vision for Russia and Ukraine against everything and everyone, his own people included.
Two - The oligarchs that the West is sanctioning are not the ones that support Putin. The oligarchs in the West are in love with the West and with Western values - it made them rich, famous and it was validating them as serious businessmen until now. Putin is a hardcore Soviet Union type of guy. He despises most oligarchs as most of them made their fortune taking advantage of the fall of the Soviet Union. Their spheres of power and influence are different from the west. Just because you have money doesn't mean you can influence politics like in the west. That's a western capitalist mentality. Putin is not surrounded by people who have yachts in Saint-Tropez. He is surrounded by old-school Soviet Union guys like himself, ex-KGB and ex-USSR military.

I am russian and just like any sane person I protest against this war, risking imprisonment, as the law is getting tighter when it comes to anti-war acts.
However I'd like to point out one thing- it is sort of inaccurate to compare Kiev and Moscow in terms of age. At that time there was Kievan Rus, which is the first Russian state. That division between Russian people and Ukrainians simply didn't exist yet. That's the reason why many believe Russians and Ukrainians are the same people, because originally we kinda were. Only later in history the focus of power moved to the east, hence Moscow and other cities came to be. But a Russian proverb still says "Kiev is the mother of all russian cities".
Imagine Washington DC was a part of Canada today, for instance, that would give you the feeling. However starting a war over this historical nuance is pure madness.
I hope this comment could give you an insight on why some people believe Ukraine should be with Russia and unfortunately some of these people choose the wrong means to achieve that vision. This war is a terrible thing and it cannot be justified.

It's sort of adding some mental distance between everyday shit (bombing alerts, danger, anxiety, chaos) and brings some order to head with some helicopter view. Because when you are in a front line you don't have time or right mood to analyze key data and build good picture of the situation, you just being bombarded by trillion fragments of information about stuff that is happening around (with a lot of desinformation)
Thanks for spreading this excellent overivew with the world and this "mental distance" for actual participants
P.S. shitty stuff that many people don't know
Mastercard, Visa, Google, OVH and other companies block my accounts because they consider the whole Donetsk region (Donetsk state) as DPR (DNR). When in reality 2/3 of that region is under control of Ukraine. Google already applied to me sanctions as if I were a citizen of the Russian Federation or DPR. My registration address is in my hometown that is 30km away from the border with DPR but companies don't pay attention to where the border actually is.
So some people end up suffering not only from the actual invasion but from mistakenly applied sanctions too :/

I'm Polish and just recently saw in person what was happening on the border with Ukraine. Saw the thousands of innocent people whose livelihood was ruined by Putin's global ambitions, the mothers carrying their children as their husbands waved them goodbye to defend their country. I saw the injured, the sick and the old forced to run away from the barbarism Putin unleashed upon them.
My heart goes out to Ukraine, to all the brave people who stood defiant against the invader, to all those who lost their loved ones and to those who lost their former lives as their homes burned, their workplace was bombed and their health was irreversibly damaged.
I wish I could do more than just donate the money I can spare and the cans of food I don't need. No matter how much I give I feel like a useless piece of shit for not doing more...
Maybe when I get my licence I'll be able to do more- move more food to the border and take people on the way back home.
The only silver lining I see in this situation is that for the first time in many years I see my fellow countrymen united above all the internal politics and disputes.
For the first time in my 21 years of living I see first hand Polish people working together in spite of all the differences both real and purposefully created, doing what needs to be done and helping our brothers from Ukraine in their time of need.
I hope you're right and that this disgusting war will end soon, so that no more people will die senseless deaths in a war that benefits a handful of oligarchs in their ivory towers built on exploiting the people of their own country. I hope it all ends soon and that I'll be able to see all the beautiful historical places Kiev has in abundance. I hope that Ukraine will soon join the EU and receive as much money as EU can pull together so the material damage can be fixed within a couple years.
I hope all the best for Ukraine and its people.

Putin may be able to hold on to some territory but it is still a loss
Putin set out to take all of Ukraine in a relatively intact state and then start what was essentily a resurgence of Russia
      That failed.
They may have tkaen around 20% of Ukraine and may hold on to it, but it has come at a tremendousc ost that will set them back decades, along with a reduced status on the international stage and a resurgent nato and europe
Putin's goal was not merely to take some territory and hold on to it. IT was to use this as the spring board on Russias return as a great superpower and rebuild the russian empire
IT is clear now that no matter what happens in Ukraine that goal of his can never succed

"Ukraine has stopped 2/10 russias refining"?
      LOL
this is 100% Ukrainian government's propaganda. Not a single Western source corroborates such an over-the-roof claim.
I am from Canada and I support Ukraine. It's not only acceptable but necessary for a country suffering invasion to ramp up propaganda (which exaggerates one's own exploits and trash-talks the enemies) to boost its people & army's morale. The Ukrainian government would have failed to rise up to its duty if it didn't keep churning out propaganda. That doesn't make propaganda true, however.
Less than 1% of Russia's refining capacity locates within the range of Ukrainian missiles and drones according to BBC. (It's not surprising at all as nearly all of Russia's oil fields locate deep inside Siberia). It means even if Ukraine destroyed every single Russian refinery its weapons are capable of reaching, it would still barely cause a dent to Russia's overall oil export.
The idea that "this has stopped [Russian] fuel exports for half a year" is just plain day-dreaming. Even Ukrainian propaganda makes no such claim.
I pray for Ukraine's victory but Russia cannot be defeated by Ukrainian delusion.

As a Russian living in Germany this has been pain to see unfold. I dont think I have any relatives in Ukrain but this truely still does hurt, seeing what I for the longest time ignorantly believed to be brothers in culture fighting over completely childish things. For years i have proudly identified with Russian culture and slav culture as a whole. Now i am not so sure. I can tell you first hand: Nobody wanted this. None of my relatives agree with Putins corrupt message and neither do I. He's fighting a non-threat over childish and arbitrary things.
It is my one and only hope that this ends soon, in favor of Ukrain. Keep fighting, Ukrain. And, Putin "иди нахуй!"

I as an american first generation my family was born outside of america. Im proud of my heritage but also proud to be an american. I stand for equality to all and freedom for all. I do not have hate and believe in peace like most americans do. We are not against russians and we stand with Ukraine. But Putin is a dictator and the world is now seeing what he is capable of and we all stand against Putin not the russian people. We want russians to be free and to see a strong russia emerge from his reign. A strong russia means a strong america and along with that a strong world. The people of the world must unite and see that without the people there is no government or need for one. They know this and try to suppress us into thinking we need them. They need us more than we need them because without us there is no them! Power to the people! Glory to Ukraine and their fight against Putin! The power is within the Russian people not Putin he fears the people! Take your country back and watch it emerge and flourish! The west doesnt want war! NATO is a defensive alliance not an offensive one. Read the NATO pact its there to read for anyone who wants to. Putin fears NATO only because of its influences that will expose the wrongs he commits onto his people everyday! Thats what he fears! The russian people need to know this!

Ukraine war is not a "Freedom War". It's the Globalist expansion. THe Biden administration and the EU. They are not free. Look at what they did with the pandemic! They hate Putin Russia because of the LGBT, the women rights and to checkmate him from gaining their world dominance before the West collapses due to its mistakes(welfare, inflation). You want to fight for Globalists? The West is no longer the free world. The political paradigm has changed. It's a bunch of Globalists that push LGBT, women's rights and communism. And they got their ass kicked in Afghanistan because of that.
It's either the russian chinese fascists or the western globalist communists. That's the world we live in now. And Ukraine regimes are corrupt as hell. Especially this one that has been established by the globalists during Obama. The West is running out of money because of its own welfare and inflation, they're gonna make it to be Russia Putin's fault from now on.
And in this case the Western communists made the first move to nuclear missile arm Ukraine. Which is like SOviet arming Cuba. Putin is backed to a corner now. This is their checkmate. He has to stop it. Which he did by the way. Easily. Screw the propaganda of 'Heroic successful resistance of Ukraine.' It's crap.

Russia has stated as far back as 2004 that Ukraine joining the Nato alliance would be a step too far . We in the West see Nato as being a friendly alliance. But in Russia they see it differently. In the last 200 years Russia has been invaded by Napoleon and Hitler with the loss of many millions of lives. Ukraine should have sought neutral independence and not Nato membership.. How would USA react if Canada sought an alliance with one of Americas opponents such as Iran or China? It would not be tolerated as it would be perceived as a threat to their security. I don't think Russia is looking to establish dominance in Europe as in Soviet communist times. They are trying to maintain a fair balance of power. Ukraine's accession to Nato would threaten this and their access to the southern ports in the Black and Mediterranean seas

Golodomor is so infamous because the wheat was produced in the lands of Ukraine and then Ukraine suffered the most from the hunger. Most likely it was outrageously poor logistics and planning from the soviet government. Not a direct genocide.
The video is almost perfect but got one thing wrong. Ukrainians don't have a separate 1000 y.o. culture. Kievan Rus was basically Russia. Ukrainian nation shares this origin. Ukrainians have their own character and culture, but it's not a different nation in a sense you may think. Ukrainians and Russians are like south Korea and North Korea, not exactly different nations but already have some differences at least in the mindset.

It is more simple than that. To win a war, one has to:
    - either completely eliminate the opposition
    - or make the other side accept the fact that they are defeated
Fail to do that, and one looses the war even if he wins all the battles. Lesson not learned in Vietnam, Avganistan (Russians and UK and US) etc.

While I agree with all of your assessment of the likely outcome, I feel like there's a very important factor you neglected to mention that almost certainly plays a very large part in why this is happening in the first place: Oil. It's no coincidence that the ball got rolling toward "Liberating" Ukraine back in the early 2000s because that's when it was discovered how much untapped oil and gas had been laying untouched within Ukraine's borders, and when outside financial support displayed interest in helping the struggling country exploit it. And while Putin has done a lot to try to bypass the major pipelines going through Ukraine (which costs him a lot to have to use) to get oil and gas to the rest of Europe, a fully developed Ukrainian petro-state would be a massive threat to the already fragile petro-state economy of Russia, especially at a point where pretty much all of Nato would LOVE to be able to not need to funnel money to the Kremlin for their resource needs. That's almost certainly the biggest motivating factor, and why Putin and his buddies feel like they HAVE to invade. They cannot afford the competition if they want to remain in power. The irony is that, like you said, this will end up costing Putin far more than he could ever realistically hope to gain. The real fear for me is what he will do when he gets increasingly desperate, which looks to be an inevitability.

      Here's an update.
      1. It is true that while Ukraine is not entirely run by neo-Nazis the Azoz Battalion, the Banderites, those guys have a 90% impact to the country. There is a video where they bragged that during the Maidan protest they only had 10% support, but they caused 90% of the mayhem. That is enough for the Russian who have never forgotten the evil Nazis. All the previous Presidents since 2014 have a weird relationship with the neo-Nazis. On one hand they are afraid of them fanatics, but on the other they need their powerful military. Any government that allow Nazis to be in their military should be condemned.
      2. Zelensky is a Jewish so there are no-Nazis. It is like the argument that one cannot be racist if they have a black friend. During WW2, there were Jews who served in the Wehrmacht.
      3. Putin does not have to conquer all the territories in Ukraine only to be faced with the nightmare of governing them. He only need to conquer those border Oblasts including Crimea that would be enough. The eastern and southern parts of Ukraine are mostly ethnic Russians and they prefer to unite with the Russian Federation.
      4. As for the rest of Ukraine, they will still be in a permanent state of war forever - perhaps some missile exchanges and some skirmishes here and there instead of a full scale conflict using ground forces and tanks. It will be not unlike the Israel / Gaza situation. As long as this keeps Ukraine from NATO membership, Putin's objective of defending Russia from NATO encroachment had been reached.
      5. Eventually everyone wants to get back to normal life. They can choose to remain with Ukraine which is now a broken dysfunctional country with broken economy, or apply to become Russia citizens.
      6. Russia's economy is the size of Texas. Big deal, how many countries economies are larger than Texas ?
7 Ukraine is a vital security red-line to Russia. It is a flat open country terrain that would be easy to sweep through should NATO decide to invade and break up Russia into several smaller countries. This is not the 80s Afghan war or the Vietnam war thousands of miles away. These are lands where actual Russians live in. They will defend and give it everything they've got.
      8. It is true that Russia and later Ukraine started from Kievan-Rus, Ukraine and Russia weren't a country until after the Mongols were kicked out. Russia established as a country first, then Soviet Union and Ukraine.
      9. Anything else this guy said about Putin as a person is all Western bias. There are many people in Africa, Asia who disagrees with the Western view (which they called the "World View") of Putin.
      10. One can armed all Ukrainians with small arms fire but these are useless against artillery barrage, missiles and bombs those things can kill from miles away.

@@alexman8800 Thank you for the update, you've more or less nailed every important update. On the Russian economy and Texas part, it is also worth mentioning that in 2023 Russia's economy not only grew but actually outperformed the entire G7 in terms of growth. Sanctions were predicted to make the Russian economy shrink by 8% in 2022 but instead is only shrank by 0.8% in 2022, not a great performance (it still shrank) but pretty good when you consider it became the most sanctioned economy on the planet say for North Korea, in 2023 it grew by 2.3% outperforming every G7 nation that year.

It pains me to see that 30 years later things like this are still happening. It really hits so close to home because the Ukrainian people feel like relatives. They look and sound almost exactly like all my family members. We’re all brothers and sisters in this part of the world... we share so many similarities.
