COP27: Historic ‘loss and damage’ deal reached at climate talks

  • Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
  • Exhausted after two weeks of talks and 24 hours of last-ditch haggling, negotiators emerged as dawn broke in Sharm el Sheikh with a deal… of sorts.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Developing nations hailed as historic, the establishment of a so-called "loss and damage" fund to compensate poorer countries hit by climate change.
But who pays and how much is still up in the air - China is unhappy at suggestions it should join developed nations in footing the bill.
And with gas now potentially classed a "low emission energy" and no fresh commitments to phase out fossil fuels, Britain's climate envoy warns the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees was on "life support".

Their focus in Taiwan not weather what they are focusing on is an economy that can surpass that of Americans so they hold the global power. The weather issue can be sorted anytime time they want.

James, James, James you sound like you haven’t been watching the news in the last couple of years. This is all down to the UK and America. Some European countries contribute a couple of per cent but in France, Holland and Belgium they all use bicycles and in Scandinavian countries everyone uses skis. We all know China and India already have “net zero” carbon emissions, so does the Royal family. They have been using horses to do all their Royal duties across the world for decades now and their many Estates actually all run on fresh air plus Royals, World leaders, Greta Thunberg, Indians and Chinese people don’t fart, so they don’t create any methane gases which causes “global warming cooling change”. We need to stop Carbon emissions CO2 needs to stop. We need to stop plants and trees NOW. We also need to provide billions of pounds in weapons to bomb Russia via Ukraine and we need to fill all hotels, hostels , bed and breakfasts, cruise ships and holiday parks with young men and provide free electricity, heating and three meals a day to anyone that is not born in the UK. Caribbean islands and Florida need billions in aid due to thousands of years of hurricanes and free food to African countries that have deserts and have had deluges and droughts for centuries, they also need free money to buy weapons from the west so they can arm their children and start wars.
It’s all there people, it’s in the news every day. We know what they need to do. Let’s just get on, let them do it and “save” the planet from

Paying developing nations huge amounts of money is like burning it in a fire. It is either gobbled up by corrupt individuals or invested into stupid pointless things.
In the case of Pakistan the Indus and other main rivers that pass through it are it’s arteries of life. The river has to flood for the Indus Valley to be such a productive agricultural space. The only option there is managed retreat of homes away from the river or a change in construction principles such as stilted construction.
Some morons are trying to say it’s their fault for living there or because they didn’t plant trees on their agricultural land. Some people don’t understand flood prevention, you can’t just plant a couple of trees sparsely and expect it to lower water transfer rates. These decisions are being made by moronic politicians at our expense.
This isn’t going to end well and it’s an enormous waste of money.

They have been using horses to do all their Royal duties across the world for decades now and their many Estates actually all run on fresh air plus Royals, World leaders, Greta Thunberg, Indians and Chinese people don’t fart, so they don’t create any methane gases which causes “global warming cooling change”. Caribbean islands and Florida need billions in aid due to thousands of years of hurricanes and free food to African countries that have deserts and have had deluges and droughts for centuries, they also need free money to buy weapons from the west so they can arm their children and start wars.

Only the middle & lower income earners are facing a cost of living crisis. Fossil fuel giants etc are earning billions in profits. Will THEY be paying into this fund, or just gov tax money... from the very people that are struggling to pay for fossil fuels, have no say in the purchase (or not) of fossil fuels, and will suffer from a diversion of funds. Don't get me wrong, I think this fund is critical. But why aren't the "dirty industries" paying for loss & damage (fossil fuel, large agri & dairy, vehicle manufacturers etc etc etc)? Why do they benefit from enviro exploitation and why are we paying for the damage & loss of ecological systems, processes & services etc.
BTW, the reason for staying below 1.5 C is to avoid ecological tipping points - pass 1.5 C and we risk irreversible ecological change that we cannot come back from... you can't negotiate with nature: it sets limits & describes consequences - we won't like the consequences.
Perhaps in lieu of funds for loss & damage, rich countries can agree to take millions of people from countries where damage is extensive & possibly irreversible 🤔 Of course there are more poor countries than rich ones, so rich countries may need to adopt 2 or 3 poor ones 🤗

I *do* wish people would stop talking about ‘climate change’. The climate has ‘changed’ for about 4 billion years when this 3rd rock from the sun emerged. The *real* issue is ‘global warming’, and how much humankind is complicit in this warming. That the planet is warming, and warming rather alarmingly rapidly is indubitable. What’s not quite as indubitable is how much human activity is contributing to this. On balance, having looked at the evidence, I happen to think that humans *are* significantly contributing to global warming through fossil fuel burning. Given this, it makes utter sense to phase out fossil fuels. With this caveat: we must do it sensibly. They will be needed for some time to come as the transition to renewables is made. Who knows? Given that we are currently in an inter-glacial period, 500 years down the line when we have stopped using fossil fuels, the planet might start a rapid cooling trend leading to that ever-promised next Ice Age, and there might be a desperate clamour to start burning fossil fuels as quickly as possible!

Basically my family from Pakistan. They built no dams. So when monsoon season comes china opens it's dams. Then the water flows to India they open Thier dams, and you have a massive flood in Pakistan, also the rich divert the water to where poor people live. It's for nothing to do with climate just infrastructure has changed along the Indus river all the way up to china

Developed countries are back burning coal because they need cheap energy. Oil gas and coal. We’re headed for a global recession. In developed countries your own people are struggling so I doubt much aid will go to poorer countries

There's this been meme I've seen on tiktok. Seen it quite a few times.
The top text is "Africa." The bottom test is "Africa when you give them 1.4 trillion dollars." Both pictures are of the same hut.
What this ignores is that far more than 1.4 trillion worth of wealth has been stolen from Africa over the last few centuries. It doesn't matter what they do with it if it's rightfully theirs.
This also ignores the fact that African "development" has always been entrusted to Africans controlled by Europeans. This policy was even enforced by european militaries. Of course there's still huts. You gave control of that money to people you bribe to make sure they can only have huts.
Colonialism never ended. It just got rebranded as private interests, with state militaries protecting their "investments."
MY militaries will no longer tolerate western ownership of minerals in the global south. You should know the bulk of my militaries resides in western countries.
Russia is just helping a friend. That's not MY army though.
Your nukes won't help you if the person trying to murder you is knocking on your door.
100 billion dollars PER YEAR is an acceptable bill for the harm western nations have caused to the global south.
We still need to talk about minerals and reparations.

So in a nutshell they pay hush money to those affected and buy themselves time until they're out of office and it's not their problem anymore. Now that's a believable promise, they definitely deserved the applause they gave to themselves.

Has anyone revealed the percentage that comes back to the inventors?
The windbags of Sharm el Sheikh have been bragging about for 30 years without any positive result. How should we believe that they have got a good idea now? Apart from spending other people's money.
