Absolutely true. I've studied piano with some important teachers, learned much of the repertoiore, and been an avid listener for over sixty years, and frankly I have NEVER heard ANYTHING that can even BEGIN to compare with this man's remarkable artistry. It goes far beyond brilliance and becomes a MYSTICAL, quasi-religious experience.
beautifully said. Agree with you totally. same here. accidentally heard an amazing recording of chopin Etude in Radio. it was nothing like the other 1000 interpretations that i have heard before. I took a paper and a pen to write the name of the pianist at the end. it was shura Cherkassky. and it is not Just his magical sound and soul. his interpretation is not random. it supports the Struktur and the form of the piece. I can understand one piece when I listen to his interpretation. as I was studying piano, I asked once my piano professor, what is his(cherkassky) secret ? he told me its a mistery to him, too
Cherkassky use of the pedal turns the piano into the harp that it is; his inner dialogue communicated through his fingers and feet translates into a cherubim and seraphim (angels of the highest order) experience hovering over the dead infant. Thanks Gullivor!
So beautifully played! I am not really a pianist but can tell the use of the pedal is so brilliantly done! Oh! the waves of intensity of the phrases carrying one along…Love it, thank you for making such a precious performance available😊 Comment of 27th Dec2022 elderly person having heard many different pianists live or online🕊️💗🦻
This is my favourite recording...every note is alive and I love Cherkassky's rubato use here and his handling of beats touches my heart... such a gem...
.....absolutely wonderful....no to say perfect!...That a virtuoso of Cherkasskys stature would chisel such transparent detail in this miniature is admirable. Thank you for uploading gullivior!
For me the best interpretation on youtube. His phrasing is unbelievable . Moved, but not rhetorical , with peaks of absolute tragedy obtained with simple means . Ravel interpretation does not matter because it is from roller (not really very reliable )
What a gem! Such a sublime, sweet tone and gentle carassing of touch of Mr Shura in an era of great pianists that had gone by. Modern pianists are almost unlikely to achieve such perfection....

Quale infinita bellezza! Questa interpretazione ha del trascendentale! Wow. I love Shura, but I had no idea he played Ravel. And that he plays Ravel like this? What is it about Russian piano players? Why do so many of them have this ability to transcend the mere piano and take us somewhere else?
His performance is incomparable . The work of this genius composer stimulates my lacrimal gland . 🍎 From Tokyo where everything is pleasant Which national are you watching this video ?
As lovely as this is, I'm quite sure it's not quite what the composer intended. This is a beautiful performance, but hmmm, is there actually a better way? Yes. The composers' way. To play the work as the composer intended. I believe if SC would have just curbed some of this rubato and ritardando, it would then be ideal. Ravel never asked that we play without emotion or expression. Nor metronomically. But there is a different kind of beauty in what Ravel asks for in his music. I think a more accurate stylistic performance might be by Bertrand Chamayou. Although I think his tempo is a bit too fast. Video on YT
darren motise .....you are simply wrote! This is perfect Ravel....a Pavane as an Infanta would have danced it. Of perfect pianism there is no discussion: unsurpassed!
I agree. But no one is mentioning this absurd usage of pedals. It is amazing though. I'm not even sure what I like anymore. Either this guy is so good that I don't understand shit, or he is just utterly terrible. For some reason I have a feeling that it's former.
Yeah! It's the former, no doubts!!! "Absurd usage of pedals!????? Shura was THE MASTER of pedalling... "IT"... No.one could do it (to this days) better: a magician of sound and colours, a conjurer of mystical athmospheres and devilish pahtos. In fewer words, a Musical Genius!!!
There is something beyond sadness in this piece. There is a sort of majesty to it.
according to my teacher the saddest melody in a major key

This has never been played by any other pianist more beautifully than in Shura's reading. So poetic and languishing. Perfection.
There are 3 or 4 that do as fine and great as he does .

Mai più potranno esistere questi grandissimi interpreti... È una questione di infrastrutture culturali!
Most most beautiful interpretation!❤
no one can beat that tone colour.
every note, every measure, turns into accoustic gold under maestro Cherkassky's fingers.
Wonderful. I closed my eyes and was taken to another world.

This isn't a song.
Give him a break, English is likely not his native language and he’s using “song” in a very general sense

Emozionante!
Only Horowitz was equal to Cherkassky's beauty of tonal shading and colours.
Cherkassky learned it from his teacher Josef Hofmann
Well let's not forget Michelangeli. But I loved Shura.
Cherkassky was Horowitz' favorite pianist ;)

A little too much rubato for my taste. It takes away some of the entrancing quality of the music.
