I've studied piano with some important teachers, learned much of the repertoiore, and been an avid listener for over sixty years, and frankly I have NEVER heard ANYTHING that can even BEGIN to compare with this man's remarkable artistry. It goes far beyond brilliance and becomes a MYSTICAL, quasi-religious experience.
beautifully said. Agree with you totally. same here. accidentally heard an amazing recording of chopin Etude in Radio. it was nothing like the other 1000 interpretations that i have heard before. I took a paper and a pen to write the name of the pianist at the end. it was shura Cherkassky. and it is not Just his magical sound and soul. his interpretation is not random. it supports the Struktur and the form of the piece. I can understand one piece when I listen to his interpretation. as I was studying piano, I asked once my piano professor, what is his(cherkassky) secret ? he told me its a mistery to him, too
Cherkassky use of the pedal turns the piano into the harp that it is; his inner dialogue communicated through his fingers and feet translates into a cherubim and seraphim (angels of the highest order) experience hovering over the dead infant. Thanks Gullivor!

For me the best interpretation on youtube. His phrasing is unbelievable . Moved, but not rhetorical , with peaks of absolute tragedy obtained with simple means . Ravel interpretation does not matter because it is from roller (not really very reliable )

Wow. I love Shura, but I had no idea he played Ravel. And that he plays Ravel like this? What is it about Russian piano players? Why do so many of them have this ability to transcend the mere piano and take us somewhere else?
As lovely as this is, I'm quite sure it's not quite what the composer intended. This is a beautiful performance, but hmmm, is there actually a better way? Yes. The composers' way. To play the work as the composer intended. I believe if SC would have just curbed some of this rubato and ritardando, it would then be ideal. Ravel never asked that we play without emotion or expression. Nor metronomically. But there is a different kind of beauty in what Ravel asks for in his music. I think a more accurate stylistic performance might be by Bertrand Chamayou. Although I think his tempo is a bit too fast. Video on YT

This has never been played by any other pianist more beautifully than in Shura's reading. So poetic and languishing. Perfection.
