Additionally, Nomad School offers a range of courses and resources to help you learn the skills you need to succeed as a digital nomad.
In today's video, I want to discuss a common issue that affects many people looking to become digital nomads: caring too much about what others think of you.
This mindset problem can hold people back from achieving success as a digital nomad and is responsible for many of the failures and difficulties that I've seen among new digital nomads starting out.
I'll also be sharing a personal story about how my own fear of judgment held me back from publishing videos on this channel for six months.

It's important to acknowledge these challenges and learn how to overcome them, so I hope you'll join me in discussing them inside of Nomad School: nomadskool.com/invite
This resonates with me a lot. It's the reason why I off-linked at least a dozen people in my early twenties. I then completed a PhD, changed profession, etc. Banter or no banter, it's probably not good for you to be around friends who laugh at you for simply reading a book or for "getting ideas above your station".
Amen to this. I moved away from home and I now when I look back on them all I’m thinking is ‘what a bunch of clowns/losers’
Been watching your channel for a few years now. I have spent over 7 years in Thailand over the years, and I love it. You just get better and better. You speak to me in this upload. Thanks for being honest and straight forward. No BS. Keep it up, Dev. Good luck. Cheers from Denmark.
This is what I was thinking..l am in my last six months as a traditional teacher in China and my US family is in disbelief that I’d rather live in other countries than live in the US as I build my online business…but I know if I go home, my energy will be sucked in a totally different direction because I find it much easier to do my thing when I’m apart from these people. If I live alone or surround myself with likeminded people, on the other hand, my energy and productivity skyrocket.
So glad I found your channel today. Thanks.
spot on brett.. most people at home either consciously or subconsciously try to hold you back
“You don’t look like a fool” I love your videos. You care about people, and make a difference for people like me.
Great video, totally agree with the crabs in bucket mentality, and yes it's horrible in the UK. While I was building my online income up in the early stages, I had a toxic work colleague who'd always undermine it and send me the "it's never going to go anywhere" message. When I spoke about earning enough online to travel, he'd always steer the conversation to "are you gona get a job out there?", completely ignoring and glossing over my online income as being legit.
Thankfully, I knew about the crabs in the bucket metaphor, and knew that''s exactly what he was - I often think people like that attack you because on some level, they KNOW they'll never have the ability or strength to break from the pack and do this themselves. They'll always be in wage slave jobs, with negative, closed minded thinking. So I ignored him and just kept plugging away, building up my online income, and the lockdowns actually helped with that.
A couple of years later, I've been 18 months independent, spending my first winter traveling and living solely off online income, and he's stuck in the same miserable job that he hates, waiting for a redundancy payoff he's unlikely to ever be able to claim, while I've stuck to my guns, didn't listen to him, and achieved what I wanted. Karma is a bitch!
So to anyone reading this starting out, don't let these negative, closed minded people (of which there are LOADS in the UK) drag you down. They're undermining you because they don't have the discipline or will to do it themselves, and NEVER will.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for this! I am at the start of the build and appreciate the encouragement.
One of the great things about RUclips is there are so many channels. So if you want to start a channel but are worried about what friends & family think, don't tell them. Just start uploading videos and try it out. The chances of them finding your channel are so remote. Then if you don't like what you have created, delete it & none of your friends will ever know. But at least you gave it a try.
I did that I'm on 27k subs in 4 months LFG
Nobody, I mean nobody that I know, know about the channel
@@charlyfoodie that’s because it only exists in your own mind
@@ubiquitousdiabolus i don't need to lie Joe. It's real and im struggling but working hard on it.

Great advice. I have received encouragement on my move to Chiang Mai Thailand for at least a year. Making a go to improve myself and blog full time. If It doesn't work, it doesn't work out. I'm not afraid to fail and learn.
Great stuff Brett.....Your descriptive philosophy is the best way to live one's life period.
Brett, you made some great points. Inspiring vlog. Identifying and leaving toxic environment is the key to avoid "Ghetto effect" or "crabs in a bucket" syndromes. As you said, overcoming this would put one in top 5 or 10%, as most people can't cross it.
Thanks for very original content.
Thanks for the video mate external judgements shouldn't hold anyone back
Whatever people are listening for Brett you are making soooooooo much greater sense. The toxic shit we live day to day is a disgrace. Yes free the body and spirit of this western nasty put down attitude
Great advice yet again Brett.
47K subscribers are glad you finally uploaded your videos 👍
Good to see you back at RUclips. I originally started watching your channel a while ago and the digital nomad think opened my eyeballs. I now trade the forex markets and live full time in Udon Thani. I'm now going to venture in to RUclips myself to start a new business venture to reach more people like you are doing my Bro. Keep at it my Bro
You're an excellent speaker! Thanks for the positive energy you're putting out to the world!
You really do have your finger on the pulse Brett, another fantastic video with great content, totally applicable to life in general, bravo! How I came across you was meant to be and it has been a pivotal moment in my life. Thank you!
It is an observation that those who knock you down, deride you and openly mock are jealous of your balls to actually get off your posterior and actually DO something positive: whilst they sit and only watch RUclips, play video games and with themselves - yes you read that - and then wonder why they have nothing and you have lived your dream.
So, let them dream on...whilst you create your reality.
Excellent beginning of the new year motivational video , thank you !
An enlightened mind creates an elevated behavior and attracts like-minded people.
I started a channel 9 months ago and your right no one cares or gives a shit, nothing to worry about just go for it :)
so true @8:15 don't tell them that you are cutting them out, just slowly remove your self from them and tell them nothing of your plans or potential love life and I bet the next thing that happens is they start on someone else and that persons life starts to go down hill .
Wisdom bro - appreciate it
Awesome video Bret. Well said
What an excellent video.
Love your attitude and description of Brett / FT All thanks
You might've just convinced me to start a RUclips channel 🤔. Coming to Thialand to "visit" and I have content from a year ago on my computer just sitting there. Online businesses at the ready, and what am I doing?!? Sitting here, smh.
I've heard a couple times about being the person you need to become. But you're right, too busy thinking about people who aren't thinking about you!
Absolutely!
Agreed.
Nice video Brett.
A line I have heard said to me over and over again... 'Got a job yet'? When I do go back to full time work, no one really cares or asks about said job again. It's a box ticking exercise. You have to laugh.
Well said and why I left home at 15 and never returned
"Never complain, never explain" is the traditional 'philosophy' of the Windsors 😂.
Good adage to live by.
Good video. Like the kinds that made me subscribe
Excellent video mate! You’re always dropping so much wisdom
This topic came at the right time. I was trying to make my first youtube video and every time I would press record, my mind would go blank, I would babble, or I would think I paused too long. I realized that what you say applies a bit to me. Worried too much about what others think, also the imposter syndrome. I was told most of my life not to go beyond the small scope. So this is new territory. Thank you for this video. Very enlightening and encouraging.
Great video gain, Brett! You inspire at times to push forward!
Christ! This is such an important subject!
Watching your early vids pretty much sparked my trip to Chiang Mai, then eventually Lisbon, Italy, Spain, Argentina, loads of places. What i came to realise is the UK is very toxic, the Thais & Portuguese for example are very welcoming, supportive etc, but not only from a work perspective, there's also less piss taking like you said, less criticism etc. Always exceptions to the rule, but then i think of the amount of Brits who have left the UK, it's not a trend....it's becoming a fact, people dont want to be there to work and live.
Brett’s a real one
Sage advice.
Hey Brett, new subscriber here from the US. Great channel! I’m coming to Chiang Mai (first time ever in Thailand) this December. Can you please recommend the best area of Chiang Mai to stay for one month. I’m looking for something near a little nightlife and some good street food markets. Thank you for any help you can give. Mark
V. Honest Brett.... appreciate all your content.
really good video Brett. You inspired me to keep working on my channel when I started losing motivation. i'm coming to CM to live in Feb. Looking forward to jumping into the Digital Nomad scene.
Great to hear!
I've gotten tons of negativity related to doing youtube, but I've found that the haters are just being haters and it's hysterical that they want to comment on video quality or a minor oops I left in because it didn't matter... Oddly, none of them post anything of their own, they just nitpick other folks' content. Supportive folks outnumber them, you just have to not let the haters get to you.
Hi Brett I'm thinking to come thailand in July
How do people handle working the odd hours when required?
I think it would be hard for me to Zoom from 11pm to 7am if needed.
We're exploring Chang Mai. Would love to meet up and have a chat if you have the time
Agree !
Hey man I was wondering what Microphone setup do you have? I recently bought a similar one buy the audio quality is so bad, especially in the noisy streets of Bangkok haha :D
As always, Appreciate the content very much!!
Gday Brett. Im always interested in your content. If you would, tell me what camera you're using here ?
Sony ZV1
@@brett_dev thanks mate. Nice bit of kit
Probably should upgrade my gopro 3 then eh ?
Oh yeah. Just get away from all the toxicity 😂 whats the quote? Never complaint never explain? Good one that 👍
Hi Bret, great videos. Question - you refer to dollars a lot in your videos, which are great for comparison - however is this AUD or USD? Thanks
Obviously USD
Once there lived a village of creatures along the bottom of a great crystal river. The current of the river swept silently over them all -- young and old, rich and poor, good and evil -- the current going its own way, knowing only its own crystal self.
Each creature in its own manner clung tightly to the twigs and rocks of the river bottom, for clinging was their way of life, and resisting the current was what each had learned from birth.
But one creature said at last, "I am tired of clinging. Though I cannot see it with my eyes, I trust that the current knows where it is going. I shall let go, and let it take me where it will. Clinging, I shall die of boredom."
The other creatures laughed and said, "Fool! Let go, and that current you worship will throw you tumbled and smashed against the rocks, and you will die quicker than boredom!"
But the one heeded them not, and taking a breath did let go, and at once was tumbled and smashed by the current across the rocks.
Yet in time, as the creature refused to cling again, the current lifted him free from the bottom, and he was bruised and hurt no more.
And the creatures downstream, to whom he was a stranger, cried, "See a miracle! A creature like ourselves, yet he flies! See the messiah, come to save us all!"
And the one carried in the current said, "I am no more messiah than you. The river delights to lift us free, if only we dare let go. Our true work is this voyage, this adventure."
But they cried the more, "Savior!" all the while clinging to the rocks, and when they looked again he was gone, and they were left alone making legends of a savior.

Awesome video
You had a video where you talked about toxic people, I think the word you used was “jobsworths”? I’d never heard this word before but it described so many people that I know
Just to play devils advocate, I struggle with public speaking, my voice goes, heart rate goes up and get all flustered. Uni lecturers suggested it was a lack of preparation/knowledge thing. But it happens in work, something I know a lot about. Some people genuinely can't do it, despite wanting to.
I can't do public speaking for the exact same reasons but this year I'm going to.
Hi Brett what do you recommend in finding a place to stay due to the gov requiring proof of accomodations, for example you could get there and hate your accommodations for a month
is this only an introverted person's problem? how come i never experience this.
Can you please recommend me a good hotel in Chang Mai old town or close to the old town? Also do I need a visa on arrival when I'm coming from the UK?
I'm hearing different things about the visa, I've read that UK are visa exempt but I've also read we need visa on arrival.
Yo!!! Where's the hat?
Human nature is, unfortunately, as you describe. I used to be amazed at how petty professionals could be.......
According to Prince Harry, "Never complain, never explain" is the unofficial motto of "The Firm".
Prince Harry? Who the fook is that guy?
