It seems that through taxation and various expenses, it's becoming harder and harder for the middle class to earn a decent living and have money left over at the end of the month.
In this video, I'm going to take you on a morning walk around my neighborhood and discuss whether it's better to earn more money in a Western country or take a hit and earn less money in a non-Western country.
Along the way, I'll show you around my neighborhood and share my thoughts on the cost of living in both Ireland and Thailand, where I've recently spent some time.
Join me as we explore the pros and cons of living in different parts of the world.

The back breaker in the west is you are taxed on income and then taxed again on everything you buy it never ends.
I'm also a big walker and I just want to support you. The health benefits of a daily walk are immense head and heart. Love your videos, Brett. Good topic today.
Very well said Brett, I live in Ireland myself and you get robbed from the minute you walked out the door until you go to bed. I'd much rather earn less including a less stressful life but not be any worse off.
The difference is you can live super cheap in Thailand if you really need to. Get a fan room for 5000 baht a month (£120). Eat on 5 quid a day. If you had to. It’s like an insurance policy. You just can’t live cheap in the UK unless you want to freeze through winter and be truly miserable.
Well one way to live cheap in the UK and US would be to commit a crime. That way, you go to prison where you will get free food, free lodging, and free sex.
You used to be able to live reasonably cheaply in the UK. Tesco value used to be an option. If you could put up with roommates, so was living in a houseshare. You could live off £1 a day at a stretch 10 years ago.
These options no longer exist. The increases have been on necessities, not luxuries. And so much of the increases in costs have been down to relentless taxation, the costs of which are passed onto consumers.
You’re spot on Brett. I’ve retired in Chiang Mai after coming here 3 years ago from Australia. The lifestyle here is better in so many ways and your money goes so much further. 👌
@@method341 We’re golfers so we play weekly. We have bikes so we cycle regularly as well. We have a pool which I think if you’re going to live here is mandatory and we swim just about all year. Good for health as we are in our 60’s. In our down time we watch golf, Aussie rules, MMA, NFL, EPL, and RUclips. My Thai wife loves to cook for us. We live off our super and make enough off the investments to live pretty well here. No problem filling the day up. Cheers H
@@method341 all the best H. 🙏
Brett you're dead right, it's not the amount of money you earn, it's the quality of life you get from it. I hate the UK with a passion and glad to say this is my last year of living here. Cheers for another great uplifting vid.👍
Good luck on your new life and will look forward to seeing you back when you have health problems 😊

@@richardbrown9344 yes it also goes up as you get older
Great video Brett. This is one of the major reasons why myself and my family are coming to Thailand. I'm living near Heathrow in Surrey atm and it is not a bad area but wow bills are are like over £200 a week at times. Many people can't even afford to pay the gas bill so heating is just turned off and families are getting sick... Absolutely outrageous. I've always wanted to come to Thailand to live since I was 16 so looking forward to it.
Thailand is not for everyone for long term living. No doubt Thailand is great for travelling, but for a long term stay, you should choose Malaysia hands down. Malaysia was a British colony once before and you do expect a lot of similarities living in Malaysia and yet more affordable than Thailand if you are living in the city. Unless you prefer rural areas like Britt, Cheng Mai is an excellent place to live.
Just come back from a one month stint in Thailand and the Philippines working as a digital nomad while enjoying the countries - best of both worlds. I would highly recommend those that can work remotely to get out of the UK and travel to SE Asia. I am now back in the UK and already feeling depressed so off again in March.
@@HiddenPvP I work in IT implementing HR/Payroll systems globally for clients. All I need to do is work UK hours as I don't need to be on client sites.
@@spookyblack7526 yes, but the Philippines as English speaking, beautiful country, more family oriented women and my girlfriend is there.
Yes it is. As a digital nomad, traveling and experience the world is the priority. Most importantly keep the cost down. It is crazy to pay for warming. Come to south east Asia, no need to pay for warming and gets unlimited sunlights
I was only gone from the states for 8 months and upon my return EVERYTHING had skyrocketed. The inflation has gone insane. And I haven’t noticed any wage increases to match that’s for sure.
@Gary we need Trump another 4 years and 8 of Desantis, imo. With him backing McCarthy I hope he will run again in 2024. I didn’t see that coming.
Hi Brett
Totally agree 100% to the high salary to high stress - my heart tablets can attest to that.
After a year which degraded rapidly from March, 2022 has to have been my worst for a decade.
Today is the fresh start in a clean New year which will lead to my last UK winter ever.
As I sit in my Pattaya hotel, the plan is written and the work commences.
Your help in this has been immense.
This video could not have been timed better for me - (you telepathic? lol)
My last winter too, whoop whoop! Uk has been going down hill unless you’re in property there’s nothing here. Better to just holiday here but even that would cost you a fortune. Seen the best parts of the uk. Time to move on to sunnier climates with happier people 😊🎉
@@cryptocrusader6078 Owing to serious underlying conditions the Dr insisted - to allow continued assistance - sometimes you gotta go with the roll whether you want to or not. Ain't dead yet!

@Farmer Smith wrong... thats an old Irish proverb lols 😆 🤣
Hope it's going well :)
Nice hat mate, keep it! It's interesting to see your walk. I can definitely see why you choose to do this one, Keep up the vlogs if you can, we enjoy them 😎🔆
You are DEFINITELY NOT wrong Brett, I’m 24/7 carer to my Mum but when the inevitable happens I know where I’m heading to! Good on u
in Ireland you are being taxed 43% on all your ETFs which you haven't sold (after 8 years), because they "assume" that you sold them. Ridiculous...
Yes deemed disposal for ETFs makes no sense. I think there are some ways around it though, investing in a mutual fund or through a pension scheme might eliminate this
@@kotare86 aka give all your money to blackrock to fund ESG. You will own nothing and be happy.
Nice walk
100% agree with you still in the U.K. will be back on the 14th. I looked at how much I had left every day in the U.K. Thailand I don’t think about the cost. Nice location Bret.
It's been a lot of fun watching you slowly reveal your power level, Brett.
This is an eye opener Brett, thank you. I get more and more motivated after every video of yours.
As usual your spot on. Keeping it real.
Hi Brett,
Happy New Year! Glad to see you back in Thailand. Loving the "walk and talk" vlogs. More please. Up to you with the hat though 😂
Great topic on this one. Depending on circumstances such as age and whether married, family etc. then taking a lesser salary in return for better quality of life makes a lot of sense. After the pandemic, many are re-evaluating their life and choosing to make changes. This especially in the over 50's who have worked hard and maybe have some financial freedom to semi-retire or to do online or remote working. The UK is cold in the winter and right now, the mood is not good due to cost of living etc. Taxation is through the roof and far too much gets taken to support the lazy who don't want to get a job or is wasted on unnecessary government projects (HS2 trainline for example).
Chok dee!
FUCKK OFF YOU POSH PSYCO CUNT, YOU WOULD NOT LAST! MINUTE SPOUTING THAT SHIT IN A ROUGH PUB ON A COUNCEL ESTATE!!!!!!!
It’s all relative to be fair. We are a family of four and my life would be very expensive if I lived in Thailand. By the time you pay school fees and medical insurance I would need to be earning much more than $20k to have a decent standard of living. I live a very comfortable life in the UK and I’m not a high earner.
I Moved from Sydney to Phuket 2 Years ago, Halved my Salary and am way better off, Just from a lifestyle perspective and even from a money point of view. I walk past the Monastery every day and say hello to the Monks and if I don't walk past they ask my friends where I am, People here care about other people you don't get that in the West
You also don’t miss all the western politics & drama filled news cycle I find.
Excellent video.Thanks.😊
Good content mate. Strikes a chord.
Love it ‘up the doi! ‘ when I lived in Chiang Mai I’d run up the pilgrims trail every morning for my breakfast (mango shakes) at the temple. Finish at the waterfall for a swim.
Always love the vlogs. Always love them since the party videos and such. Happy new year. 😃
I went up that road to Doi Suthep back in 2019 on a motorbike. I wish I knew about those side roads and trails. I might have tried hiking the whole way.
Team hat. Thank you for your videos, I'm packing and getting excited to have an option outside of the US.
Amazing video again! Can’t wait to join. 10 months and I’m ready n Cambodia
Great video! The trees in Changmai are beautiful! Ive been looking at bare leafless trees for a couple months in the freezing north of the US. I’d like to visit there and just experience what it’s like. I keep trying to save but like you said, there’s always some expense that clears you out. Hopefully i’ll be reincarnated as a monk :D love the hat haha, Thank you for making this video
Simplify your life in the US. Get rid of anything that you don’t absolutely need/use on a regular basis. Have home theater? Sell it! Watch stuff on your computer/phone… Can’t do it at home, a transition to being a nomad will be difficult if you think you really need all the “stuff.”
I'm considering Thailand but one thing that concerns me is the driving over there. I heard that Thailand has high traffic fatalities. Could you please speak to this concern?
Yes, fatality rate on the road is very high in Thailand. I am Thai who have lived in US for 3 decades. I am scared of driving in Thailand. It would be challenging for me if I have to drive in Thailand.
Great Vid Brett, also the beauty of living in Thailand is you can grow some medicine and no one now bats an Eyelid. What’s the air quality like currently in Chiang Mai?
It's terrible
That property with two gigantic houses may belong to Marc Faber the wealthy swiss value investor. He lives near the river and has two houses on his property. One of them is his office. You can see marc all over RUclips being interviewed. Toney Robbins interviewed him in his book Money Masters. I enjoy watching Faber
10x minimum I think for the disparity between rental properties in Ireland vs Thailand for reference currently begrudgingly renting in dublin
Iv been living in thailand for nearly 2 years now and it was the best dicision i ever made i could not stand the uk i come from reading in berkshire were people are so stuck up were its all to do with how much money you earn and the car you drive and what university degree you have and i could not stand the overbearing govermont and people looking over there shoulder the whole time and going by the system and having no individualiy made my blood boil did my head in

Hi Brett
Spot on mate take the hit on wages and live a stress free life style in Thailand. 1st time subscriber long timer planner as a farmer maybe an opportunity to make tai sausages.
In the U.K., planning my move to Thailand very soon. 100% agree with everything you said. Being a digital nomad, do you have to register as a business for your visa ?
Cheers Dev
What business have you started online?
Brett - loved Chiang Mai back in April - went to the Zoo twice in golf cart , what a great place - cheap as chips food to die for / incredible shopping centres - open food markets hotels / history ! Mate you are in paradise. Hired a car from Avis did the whacky races ..... death race down to Phuket over a couple of weeks. Rolled the dice made it but never seen anything so dangerous but fun....history and appreciation is important. Advice is you have to like Thai street food and embrace the fact we are visitors not equals and show the respect in that order.
Great video don’t get run over or bitten by a dog ,
We had a bus from zoo up to the temple and the old chick driving just went right across the road like an F1 driver cutting people off in other lanes ..... WTF ? Anyway lived to tell the tale
Hello Brett. I am looking for a place to live in thailand for 1-month a year or so. I can bring my work with me if need be. I love making a lot less money. I am 64 and retired for the most part. Have no bills other than a mortgage that is taken care of by the rent. So hell yes, make just as much as you need to have some fun and travel. Less stress is the way to go, totally agree with you. Save whatever you can so you can have an income stream.
You are so right!
Brett I like your recent political stuff about the west 👍
Quality of life less stress over quantity and oodles of stress every time!
Another Great video, what area is this you're walking around?
Great info
See that Vlogg you done well Brett i see you in Chiang Mai i was going back to uk in July was stuck there 2020 best year ever
Brett does it rain everyday in Pattaya Thailand in September? I’m coming by myself for 31 days from Sep 1st to October 2nd. I hope it doesn’t ruin my trip
Hey, Brett love your videos. I recently retired and getting close to moving to Thailand. Is it OK that I don't know the language or will it be a problem for me?
Thanks in advance.
Not an issue
@@andrewmoss1135 thanks
Google translate can help you with the language but you should have the health insurance ( in case you are sick). Dental in Thailand is cheap but good .
You have to compare salary with cost of living. The ratio is what counts
Brett, interesting what you say and greetings form Germany. I don't have a TV but still pay for a license, ridiculous !!!
But I think for you its probably more about the quality of life rather than anything else.
We will be coming over to Koh Samui for 3 weeks in Fen/March with a view to a longer term commitment.
We absolutely agree with you by the way.
By the way Brett, how do you get around the Visa situation?
Thanks and stay happy and safe.

"Miserable country surrounded by Miserable People" - Spot on!
Totally agree with the sentiment
Thank you for the wise words, I totally agree with you!!!
Also, I am all for the hat, the sun in thailand is very very strong and the UV radiation can damage your skin.
I wear wide brim UPF 50 hat with neck cover all the time and UPF 50 shirt and long pants. If you don't do it you'll end up like a burned coal 😂😂😂
Oh, and you know that nice diesel car i saved for. .I will have to pay 12quid a day to drive it on the roads that I paid for come august
Brett, do you see many snakes around Chiang Mai when you go on walks?? I'm a bit afraid of snakes. Do any come into your house?
Good insight.
I have the same toughs for time time ago looking back last 10 years
The hat rocks!!!! It stole the show, sorry Brett.
Thoroughly enjoyed the information and the format. Love the place and agree 100% with the taxation into slavery. West is done.
I’ll gladly take the hit and still be able to live a lifestyle that meets my needs and a little extra for saving.
When I return to the States, I’m always shocked by what a rat race it is. My bills here aren’t much, and I earn good. But … it still takes months to save up enough to come back. It eats up your money so much living here.
How far was your walk? Great video
I earned £45,000 this year, and i kept less than half, it's a bloody joke
Cut that cost of living way down by living in Thailand. My goal is to make the move while also being able to travel to other places. Chiang Mai here I come!
Should also focus on earning more not just saving costs
Can’t save yourself into wealth
@andrew moss one thing at a time. Earning a nice living has never been an issue for me. Trying a new avenue of income. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Time will tell
@@TNKeith have backup funds so if it doesn’t work out then you haven’t put yourself into trouble
@andrew moss no worries on that front, thankfully. Free to take some chances for this next year without worry.
That is a cool looking temple
I feel that if I lived there I would eat better foods and become more healthy
I ❤ the hat dude.
Iam of to Chiang Mai2023 just going to take my daughter to England in April for life experience then going to live in Thailand England nothing here
Left over, there was supposed to be some leftover!?!?
You back out there mate? I thought you come home…
Live in Thailand best if i can earn we all not clever on a Computer
You came to my same conclusions...I'll work toward going away from my country
You are both right and wrong. On the microeconomic level, you are right that the democracies are inadvertently approaching communism by fire taxing the citizens 24/7. On the macroeconomic level, you are wrong. Alliances need "friends" and Thailand, despite its 69 million inhabitants, does not have many international muscles, both economic and military. Thailand is a nice place, but the country's economy is bad at creating long-term value = growth.
There car industry and manufacturing is strong, however realestate and investments compared to West doesn't go anywhere however that can be good and bad depending on your situation There actual GDP for population isn't massive and I think this shows up in the wages , best to have your foot in both camps
You're not wrong. You are definately right!
💯
haha, yup! math is hard Brett.
Are there places to rent around your neighborhood there?
Didn't care much for the video, but that hat had me mesmerized.
JK, it's a video that's very to the point where it's hurting me atm. I spent the first 8 months of 2022 in Mexico and Colombia, but couldn't find a job. Basically had 3 months after training etc in which I got kicked out by a crazy landlord, pissing money away and breaking my timeline. From September, I've been working a shit job just because it's 2x12hours on Saturday and Sunday, paying very little, so I have the week off to build progress.
Apart from always running out of money in very cheap housing, coming back to Belgium really feels like a hardcore mistake. I only came here because I know the system, being a citizen. But after 8 months of Latin America and 4 here, I feel like I'm stuck in a dump with a solid case of winter blues and homesickness. The progress I need to GTFO is hindered so much by living with brain fog, even though I use the blue light lamp and other stuff to not lie in bed all day.
He's a posh Muslim looking XXXX!!!!
Stop complaining
Make a plan and put it into action,
Brain fog isn’t real
all pland 100% over the target
Take a hit..
I know..... dogs are the worst part of the walk :)
More hat
Middle class in uk are the worst
i do agree with what a lot of what you have to say, and i have spent a considerable about of time in thailand and live in england. BUT you fail to mention the many many disadvantages of spending long periods of time in thailand, and also spend a lot of time talking about miserable people in the west, yet you appear to be miserable and angry at the west in every one of your videos.
it is obvious that earning a western wage or even a percentage of that and living in thailand etc you will see more for your money but you get what you pay for
btw i’m just trying to be unbiased 👍🏻
And what are those disadvantages in your view?
The mutts ain't barking at you so much as whoever it is they cannot see, yet you're clearly talking to. Even the pooches in Thailand are afraid of coming into contact with a P'.
As for the morning walk, do yourself a favour and sack any routine you abide by. As times get harder (which they undoubtedly will) why make it any easier for some nutter who might, knowing your routine, lie in wait to hit you over the head and bury you in a shallow grave (or not even bother to do that), simply for what you might have in your pockets?
Walk it in reverse, change the route entirely from day to day (makes it more interesting, too) - or hop on the bike and drive half a mile, first.
"Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me" is my motto.
Back to the subject of the ruddy dogs, is it true (as I've been advised) that folk, even the owners, are no longer allowed to physically "restrain" or "correct" the fkrs, in Thailand?
I'd personally like there to be bounty put upon the head of every last one of the hazards which is not properly contained within the confines of its owner's property, through secure gates and fences, or on a leash, when outside those perimeters.
I'd make a blinkin' fortune.
Just brilliant
