In this episode we take a look at engine 2 on the free abandoned yacht! We were able to get engine 1 to start and run, but engine 2's starter was broken. Take veterans out to fish. I'm a 'disabled' USAF Veteran myself. The VA has programs for veterans, but most ignore them as too uninteresting.
Rebuild and show Veterans your support for their service. Also, photo ops for each fishing trip would be great.
@@rbolo29 This sort of boat isn't suitable for fishing. Cruisers are too high and there's too little deck space for their size. A walkaround or a noreaster is a much better option for that.

If Dave Stone can pull in 180lb tuna on a paddle ski, I am sure Rambo in his wheelchair can pull in a few seabass from the deck of this boat.
It's nice to have a better boat to carry disabled veterans. Imagine going fishing or even going on a boat ride once in a life experience for some veterans that served and have lost their body parts or even going through PTSD, you can get a reset from it all. Also you can create more videos 🎥 and we can see the veterans enjoying if they don't mind being recorded and being on youtube

@rebuild rescue......you can also piggyback that idea as well. I'm sure there are young vets or kids of vets that are interested in marine biology or nature conservation. Perhaps you can use the boat for education as well. Perhaps expand to under privileged or orphaned kids as well. Sparking kids interest and educating about nature can't be a bad thing. Maybe sponsors get interested and fund a scholarship or two.

I think this would be a great idea. When I got out of the Army, I had serious anxiety and depression issues, with a touch of PTSD. I was given two seats on an all inclusive deep sea charter. One of the best days I had around that time of my life.
I have the exact same boat and rebuilt her over 7 years. Have fun! It’s a battle on everything. If you ever need any info I am a 3375 expert. Make sure when you pull the engines to look under the fuel tanks. The structure was not pitched and water destroys the substrate under it. The tanks too…. Replace the generator platform with starboard too. Go with PSS shaft seals also. Water sling destroys everything.

do the engines both turn the same direction? I mean will swapping the starter work?
Both engines are standard L/H rotation. The Hurth transmissions and prop angles do the counter rotation.
The starters turn in the exact same direction on both sides.
As a disabled veteran myself ( 18 medically retired), I appreciate your standing up for vets like myself and others who served our great country. This build looks like work but worth it in the end. Thanks for all you do for the community and the country.

Some boats that have twin engines have a handed pair of engines. One will run clockwise the other anti-clockwise. The early big block Chevs were like that, dunno bout the newer versions.
Otherwise the gearboxes will be clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation (counter-rotating).
Check the rotation of the engine before changing the starter as they are probably counter rotating engines so by changing the starter from one engine to the other you will be trying to start it backwards
I think the reversal of the prop rotation comes from the drive unit and not the engine?

Engines All run in one direction. There is too much stuff to change (cam, followers, water pump, etc) to make it run backwards.
@@davidelliott5843 the only difference should be the cam, waterpump and starter. There's a lot of boat engines that are reverse rotation. It's cheaper to change a few parts in the engine that build a completely different gearbox. The Detroit Diesel two strokes will crank in either direction depending on what starter they have. I've even heard of some that if the starter was weak, it was possible for the engine to kick back and start in reverse including the one's in trucks...lol.
i love the idea of using it as a getaway for veterans. i know quite a few that would love something like this but simply cant afford it because they dont get much of a pension anymore

Hiya. I love your channel. I'm an aircraft engineer And I worked for cosworth from 1994 through to 2004. Then went back to cosworth three years ago. But now retired. And i love boats.. this channel is perfect for me.. please dont be upset with me. I don't mean any disrespect. But because I love what you do. I just wish. There wasn't so much talking. I want to see more of the work. It's just seems so much time is wasted. I'm sorry for the moan. What you do in finding aircraft and boats is so cool. I just want to see you get on with it. Lol. On the generator, check the oil pressure safety switch too. #1 culprit of the generator not running (at least on diesels).
Possibly try using a longer breaker bar or a pipe extension on that one to get better leverage instead of burning up a starter motor. Break it loose before engaging the starter.
Those 7.4 EFIs have weeny little crank bolts. You'd snap it right off if you tried that.
Might break the rusty crank bolt, I'd try prying over the flywheel through the removed starter hole, big flat bar or something

20 year auto mechanic, not marine, but two things I would suggest... first, anytime I try to start an engine that has sat for year I would try to crank it by hand first before dry cranking it. Pulling the plugs and putting oil in cylinders was a great idea. I would have recommended cranking it with plugs out first to allow pistons to push air out freely. Second suggestion, again with a long sat engine I would supply alternate fuel source to avoid pulling crap out of the tanks. After I know it runs then I'd check the tanks and lines for clean usability. Otherwise great work, sweet project! Looks like fun!!

as a veteran that suffers from pstd I would say taking them out on fishing trips and just cruising around on the water would do great for them

As much as I love the idea of fishing & booze cruising for vets, I fear the operating cost of aircraft and marine craft just might be to cost prohibited but I'd love to see you keep it.

filling that baby up with fuel is probably only about $1200 right now
I brought a boat with a seized 454 in. I filled poured about 5 litres of diesel into intake. Let sit for a month. Then made a long breaker bar that bolted to the pulley bolts. Slowly worked the crank back and forth and free'd up. I took the heads off. Sanded and cleaned the bores. Turned engine a few times by hand and it felt free. Put new started in and head gaskets. Started and runs fine. 3 years later still running sweet.
Fix it and keep it for the vets! Would be awesome for all they have done!
In my opinion. Taking veterans out for a good time on the water sounds great! Maybe even vlog some cool stories while out. Love the transparency
Remember on a boat, you have a 12 volt and 120 volt system, your battery is providing 12 volt to 12 volt accessories. The gen set pulls fuel off of one of the fuel cells and it does have an electric fuel pump. When working on the gens set change all parts that should be replaced due to age (raw rater pump) especially on the side of the genset that you cannot get to. I have been an owneing and repairing boats for over 35 years starting with my 21 ft that I still have, and my present 50 ft yacht with twin diesels.
It’s probably worth getting a crane and getting the engines out to rebuild. When the engines are out then clean up and repaint the engine bay.
I think using it too take out Vets/F.R. is a better use,raising money can be done anytime.Having a boat and taking out a few guys n gals will have a deeper impact.Fishing and boating is such a great way too relax and make memories.
As a First Responder, I would say to use it to take people out on fishing/ glamping trips to get away from the stressors in life. With that said, that would take a whole lot of $$ and effort. Plus you would need the staff, upkeep on the boat, coordinators and not to mention medical and safety. I am not sure that is really feasible. It would be awesome if you could manage all that. But probably selling it makes more sense.
Not the right boat for disabled vets. No way to get a chair on it and no way to get downstairs and no room in the rear for chairs either. Horrible boat for the stated purpose.

Just a suggestion. Remove the hinges from the door of the piece you removed from the deck. Remove the door and greatly reduce the weight.
You can't do that, it's a safety issue. The engines have to be covered, because of where the access point is for the engine bay.

Keep it for fishing excursions for vets. Combine that with the 401 to fly vets to you for said excursions.

Vets appreciation days, fishing is 1 obvious avenue, but could have disabled Vets event days, bonding days, PTSD days with a counselor, unit reunion days etc... perhaps with the blessing of the military, with sponsoring fuel and maintenance ???? ( and you could fly them in from all over...) Don't just limit to fishing, this could be a tool to bring Vets and families back to the real world, given particular conditions they each need... Military support groups would jump on this!

If you get it fixed up with a view to taking vets out on it then that will take up a chunk of your time. I would suggest fixing up and selling then putting the funds to the Rescue Foundation
Yup - and avoid the ongoing maintenance costs involved with older boats.
Look my friend as a wheelchair bound 100 % veteran taking veterans out for a weekend trip or day !! We would love to go out and fish and eat and hang out to depress! And remember what it feels like to actually feel normal!! Great job you guys I love your videos and saving the 401 as a old sailor and Rv repair guy and a aviation boatswain mate fuels technician and a nuclear clean veteran I watch you guys instead of tv!! Been a boater all my life so really appreciate what you are doing with this yacht. What a find. Seriously would love to get a similar chance. No one in California abandons a boat like that. Anyway. I like the idea of taking veterans/first responders out for fishing/water sking/ fun the water. Also taking their families along would be good. If they were on deployment connecting with their families is really important. My church helped sponsoring folks on deployment at Club Malibu in British Columbia. There was a lot of healing for the soldiers.

For the ignition switches... Think about a key'd master switch with two port & starboard buttons or toggles similar to your aircraft starting buttons. Only one key needed to operate and less to go wrong. Keep up the good work and I love watching the mechanics of the boat and airplanes.
I doubt it was a rod knock you heard. I would look for stuck valves first. Pull the valve covers and see if any rockers are loose from the valves sticking down or the push rods bending trying to open stuck valves. With as many engines as you seem to be starting for the first time in several years, you should rig up an oil priming pump. Simple as removing the pressure switch and plumbing a hose from a simple hand oil pump to get a few ounces of oil into the bearings before spinning anything.
Just pull fuel pump fuse and plugs....and use the starter to prime everything.
The "muffler" is really to reduce the exhaust fume. Mixes the exhaust with the water to exit the boat. Generator will have some zincs to do as well. One thing I hated on a similar boat i owned was that the engine bay was not ventilated well. It caused everything to corrode prematurely. Look into adding ventilation in addition to the blowers.
If that Generator is like a motorhome generator where it feeds off the main fuel tank, if the fuel level is below a quarter tank of gas then the generator won't suck gas. Check your gas level this might be the case. A extra fuel tank to check the generator sounds like a good idea. Best of luck as you get this Yacht rebuilt and back in the water again.

@@rebuildrescue I can imagine Jason. I've had 3 knee ops. myself.... and after my 2nd I basically had to relearn how to walk. Unbelievable the difference when you actually do the P.T. they tell you to do lol.
As a veteran of the USAF I can say I would like to see your yacht fixed up, made seaworthy, and used to allow low income vets to go fishing and just spend time upon the water for a day or a weekend if they want to. Perhaps a vet and their wife/husband spending some top notch Q-time with each other.

As long as they both are single, I have no objection. As a vet whose now ex-wife cheated on him while he was in *basic*, I know the feeling of coming home and finding out and my reaction was not pretty either from the inside or the outside. Please do not put another vet through that. It won't be pretty either.

Bringing a vet on a fishing trip will only give him a few hours of fun. Using the money to buy things like prosthetic limbs will give years of usefulness. The money will be so much more valuable if used to pay for medical treatments or medications.

Great project for the vets and first responders. I would choose to keep it and bring the joy to our veterans and first responders to make lasting memories 😁👍
You can always set up a separate foundation to receive donations to help veterans so I think using that boat to take out veterans on weekend get aways would go much further in the long run to help all veterans. Being out on the water in canoe is so much therapy to the soul so I can't imagine how much therapy joy and fun on a boat of that stature would bring to veterans so yes keep it and make it the weekend getaway for veterans 100%
Fix the boat, give veteran cruises and charity events
Keep it and share it. That's a direct relief for the people you take out on the boat. And then if they agree make videos about it so that people can see what something so "simple" does to people

Make sure you verify that it is a rod knock and not a top end noise. I had a 350 in a boat once that myself and 2 shops thought was a rod knock. Turned out to be 4 tuliped valves. I had already bought the shortblock when I found out. And to prove it was not a rod knock, my buddy put the shortblock in his truck and ran it for several years before selling it.

So, much like you, We bought a 1999 Maxum 3700 SCR for $4k. It's 40' long, 13.5 feet wide access weighs 22k lbs. Twin Horizon 454's. The expression on your face was much like powers when we went to see it. We had NO IDEA it was that big! We were blown away. It was like looking at 2 story houses.. 😊 The interior is incredible and the lighting makes the boat. It was missing the radar arch and I took one from a 33' foot Maxum cut it in half and fiberglass 14" to extend it. Lots of lighting and speaker modifications in the process. It looks awesome. About to get started on the 454's but I don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to boat motors so it will be a learning experience. THIS is where you wirking on the 454's are coming in handy. 😊 Gen works and all outlets, lights etc function using battery and shore power. I can go to it and stay days on it while working at my own time. AC, 2 tv's, refrigerator, etc. I could easily live on this boat. The inside is immaculate. It's like it was in a time capsule. You wouldn't believe it if you saw it. It's a shame I can't send you pictures at RUclips. So been watching videos and learning when came across your channel. Enjoying while learning and watching your restoration. 😊

Jason, I love the idea of using it to take out vets for a bonding experience. As a vet myself, and the co-chair of my company's Veteran Employee Resource Group, we are always looking for ways to get our vets together for outings like this. We do similar events for our vets and wrap them up with "fire-side chats" to allow time for us all to connect and just speak openly about our experiences. Fully support all you do and I'm still waiting (impatiently) for the CJ project to come back around. You and I have chatted about that quite a bit a while ago. That and the Austin (but more so the CJ :-) ) need some air-time!
Check to see if the rotation of each engine is same or different.. starboard right hand, port left hand. Or both same right hand. If left and right hand then starters may not swap over.
I think that if the boat has counter-rotating engines, then the starters would be counter-rotating too and not swappable.
The counter-rotating may be accomplished in the transmission rather than the engine. I'm not enough of an expert to know which is the case for this boat.
Typically the engines are standard and the drives/ transmissions are counter-rotating.
Engines are standard rotation with the counter rotation being changed in the drive or trans

Make sure one of those engines isn’t reverse rotation while you’re sourcing parts and whatnot. I’m not intimately familiar with how Cruisers set up the power on their boats.
You should make sure that those are not counter-rotating engines.(turn in opposite directions) before you swap out the starter.

At the end of the last episode were you found the broken starter, did you not find you had both clockwise and counter clockwise rotating engines? I know from my own time in boats that reversing one is not a good thing.
I would be interested in seeing a video on how you manage all these various projects as well as the targets you have. I like the organizational structure people derive. Good job!
#1 tool when working in a boat engine compartment, an extendable magnet stick thing.. need that for dropped tools.. there's ALWAYS water down there and you'll NEVER get lost wrenches without a magnet.. need one of those for sure!
I would say that it is well worth rebuilding both engines. Personally, I would not look to do any work on them until they are out of the boat where all the pieces can be more easily accessed. Fortunately the interior of the living spaces looks like it needs a lot less work than the 401's cabin.

You probably old have found it easier if you had removed the hinged engine hatch also be pretty hard to turn over a 454 with a short socket arm a breaker bar might have done it. Good luck 🇦🇺🤨🍺
I love what you guys are doing as a 24 yr served Veteran . What he needs to do in the engine bay area is to shrink himself then he will have a great work area . Wouldn't the parts rust like that gif they sit under water for a long time ?...?...?
I would love to see this available to people for use to get away and spend time with family. We see allot of the worlds ugliness in my line of work, and being able to spend some time surrounded by beauty, makes a huge effect on our soul.

The right way would absolutely be to pull both engines.
DO NOT SWAP starters unless you know both engines rotate the same direction!
He actually mentioned that they counter rotate in the previous video.
Or I guess maybe they both turn counter clockwise? Which is weird? Maybe the transmissions counter rotate somehow?
I agree with most comments. keep it and use it for veterans boating trips.
Easy fix with the engines! Check to see if it has a working bilge pump. Should be a right and left side pump.
Loving the content. However i feel like before you spend all that money on replacing parts and rebuilding motors you should have the hull inspected to make sure its structurally sound and not water logged with how long its been sitting with water in the bilge

i totally agree with creations 2022. Some of us vets enjoy fishing but some of us are very challenged because of disabilities. brain injuries and wheelchair bound vets and first responders are sometimes turned away from enjoying some of lifes greater pleasures. boating is one those little pleasures. if possible make the boat and the 401 wheelchair accessable. good luck with all of your challenges with your projects.
I'm all for boozing and cruising for the Vets and first responders, as we all know some give and some give all. God bless the the family of those who serve and have served
Fix, sell, donate.
Definitely pull all the engines. You'll sadly discover a lot more rust and corrosion. A buddy designed a SS plate and added a second bilge pump to help keep the engine bay dry along with a dehumidifier in the cabin and engine bay when out of the water for extended periods of time.
Be more thorough than anything with boats and go the extra mile with maintenance. It is more expensive but it'll last a long time.
As for what to do with it, veteran fishing excursions in your local area would be great.
I’m betting you’re right and we’ll find a bunch more corrosion. It’ll be nice to clean it all up and replace all of the hoses and repaint everything.

Keep it and use it for vets! Bad ass wrap when it's done.
For the water, does the boat have any sump pumps? Getting some new batteries with a solar trickle charger or plug-in trickle charger, will help keep the boat dry. Also some golden rods for the engine bay, and marine heater fans for the cabin will help fight the moisture and mold.
putting the boat to use for veterans is awesome , I am a SADF veteran , here we get no recognition , having such a type of thing in South Africa would be really cool . A little respect goes a long way with any veteran , no matter what the war and what the army . fix it for the vets !

Definitely keep the boat and use it to bring joy to veterans and first responders. I really think they would get more out of it that way. There don't seem to be many ventures that focus simply on bringing them joy.
One of those motors are counter rotation. So you were turning that one backwards with the starter off the other motor. That noise sounded like possibly a broken flywheel to me
Fix it up and keep it for the vets and their families to enjoy for years to come. It would be so helpful mentally.
Just remember what boat stands for break-out-another-thousand. Saying that to see videos of our precious veterans smile and relax on the water would be amazing
Rip the whole yatch apart upto its skeleton and rebuild it will be a good option. I suggest to sell it. It will be useful for future projects
