I'm a landlord. I told my tenants, just do the best you can, and we'll get through this together.
But we are a small operation, just me and my wife, and our income has been cut in half by this pandemic, not counting the rental property. I don't see an eviction or a foreclosure in our future, but I know a lot of people that are not going to be so lucky. And most corporations, really aren't going to have any ethics or empathy.
The scary thing is that the American gov't is not providing cash to renters who can then in turn pay their landlords... and this will lead to Wall Street owning more rental real estate (instead of the preferred small landlords). We know what happens when Wall Street owns something...
Thank God for landlords like you. You are few and far between.
You are the rarest kind then. Only compassion will save us.
Or more like if your renters can't even pay you due to it, there will be no one to replace them
Nice gestures but landlords should be abolished entirely.
I am from Romania and there is one single statistic that is surprising about that country. Apparently we have the highest rate of home ownership in the world -96 percent. To be honest, owning your own place, regardless of how shitty it is, gives you enormous peace of mind. I really feel for people that struggle with this particular aspect of their lives.
That's cool - I didn't know. Take care your law makers keep it like that before the locusts come. Here in good ol' Germania, housing prices have already become toys to big finance corporations. As a result, rents are unaffordable. Buying prices are over the rooftop. Strange how that always happens when you make speculation objects out of necessities.
Is there racism in Romania cuz they're not I'll be headed there
@@deeboy4538 They also have like the fastest home internet connections in the world.
Alot of people here in the US have alot bigger home than they need. I paid less for my small home than most people pay for a car. And property taxes are only $300 a year. No amount of corona virus could make me worry about losing the roof over my head.

UK paid all its citizens from it's pocket during the lockdown, free healthcare and yes rents and credit cards were deferred for 4 months
@@youme5260 Reality doesn't have to be this way.
Taimoor Ali you mean by borrowing more money and increasing national debt and deferring rent helps no one especially when the economy is this bad
@@Pilotalphapapa you know money isn't real, right?
I was evicted by self-help methods because my girlfriend and landlady got in a pretty minor argument. Locks were changed with all our belongings inside that day while we were at work, police finally came 3 days later, searched me, and gave us 15 minutes to pack essentials. Couldn't get the rest of our stuff for almost a month.
In civil court I studied hard did everything right, even had a ton of supporting evidence.
On our court date when our case was called we were instructed to go to a different court room and judge. Only us, for our case.
In that empty court room, after my opening statement summarizing all that happened, citing 5 or 6 tenant's rights that she violated, and stating that I had evidence to support every claim I made, I was stopped and told by the judge that, and yes I quote: "those laws don't actually really hold up in court".
I was not allowed to make further statements or show ANY of my evidence and the case was thrown out.
This was in Santa Cruz, CA.
I had a similar experience with a commercial property dispute. I am a small business owner for a year and half the owner ever fix the roof and it turned into black mold. After pay rent I just got tried and stop paying rent. We ended up in court and the judge refuse to view evidence. We ended up doing a settlement for the eviction case. This is in Chicago Illinois.
Not a problem, this time I am going to file a complaint against owner for intent of fraud and call the media to attend the court hearing. I have any even bigger case, the scumbag landlord decided to change locks without sheriff schedule during Covid19 where theres a state order for no evictions in place. This time I will sue him for back rent and damages.
What kind of world do we live in were crap like this goes on
according to dontgetkickedout.com California is one of the lowest scoring states on eviction (rated less than 1 out of 5 possible stars) so not exactly surprised...that is disgusting though...your landlord committed a crime. too bad it wasn't one anyone cared about prosecuting before this apocalyptic fucking pandemic

That world is called ‘The USA.’
thats bullshit. Its illegal to do a lock out and they can't evict you without a court order. As a landlord I call bull on your story.

When that guy said "this is the first time i've ever laid this out like this for any one, like this is my bedroom and it sucks" that hit me. That was super sad.
I agree, i see this too often on los angeles and its happening to people who really want to work and pay rent, they simply aren't able to
The best news story I ever saw come out of this mess was when a landlord in Los Angeles - Saturn Management - sent an email blast to their 300 tenants reminding them rent was still due, but inadvertently used CC instead of BCC, which allowed the tenants to communicate with each other and organize a building-wide rent strike, all via email.
and in a few months the government comes down because the landlord couldn't pay his mortgage for 2 months and then everybody gets evicted at once. Good times.
@@hurotiz If a landlord can't pay the mortgage without the tenant's rent, then they shouldn't have bought the building(s) in the first place. In this particular case it's a professional landlord/rental company, they should have reserves and if not they should have better luck getting a loan than an individual landlord would. It'll be okay. And if not, then perhaps the tenant's can buy their building(s) at a distressed price and turn it into a co-op. The point being there's options for the tenants and if a landlord leverages themselves that badly then they deserve no pity.
@@Matchgirl42 You think that all landlords should be responsible for letting their tenants off rent free because "If a landlord can't pay the mortgage without the tenants rent, then they shouldn't have bought the building in the first place." That's the most self centered thing I've ever heard. I could say the same thing about renters: If a person can't afford to pay rent when they don't have a job then they shouldn't be living in an apartment. Many small landlords may not make a lot of money, and that may conflict with your views that all landlords must be evil corporate overlords. But to say that they shouldn't have bought the property because they can't afford to run a business that depends on people paying rent on a regular basis as the main means of income is... really ignorant. I understand that some landlords are being complete dicks right now, and that's on them. But what isn't on most landlords is a need to pay their bills, people who can't pay their rent aren't alone and blaming landlords because they need to pay theirs is simple finger pointing. There's no good solution to this problem and tenants are the ones that will suffer the most because in many cases, if tenants can't afford to pay their rents, they won't have the money to form co-ops, if bigger businesses get hold of those properties, it will be even worse. You might think that your sticking it to the man, but what your really doing is just sticking it to yourself.
Matchgirl42 then renters should never rent if they can’t pay
Casual Ninja renter shouldn’t rent if they’re relying solely on the tenants to keep their business afloat. You’re providing housing not a business. Treat it as giving people a necessity not a business.
Half the time, the landlord isn’t even in the same state, so they could give two shits about a person they’ve never met face-to-face.
A roof over someone’s family’s head shouldn’t be viewed in the same spectrum of a Netflix subscription. “If you can’t afford it then don’t live in a house”.
Accountability and empathy seem to be key, lacking, qualities required to be a landlord it seems.

We carry this ego that we're the smartest beings on earth yet we can't even provide for someone on this same planet. While someone dies from hunger today someone on the same planet will die of obesity. Its greedy to not care about things when it doesn't effect you. It shows how much you lack empathy. If humans don't care for themselves there's always going to be humans suffering. I don't think its nonsensical its obvious. My family and I got evicted from our duplex in 2015 and was homeless until 2018. It was myself as a teen, my pre-teen sister, my infant brother, and my unemployed mom (my dad walked out on us and was the only worker at the time). We lived in hotels until savings ran out, shelters, our car, and stayed in other people's houses until we could find our own. It took a long time to not only find a place cheap enough for a single parent of three to afford but a job my mom could feasibly get despite the large amount of time she had spent being a housewife. It was extremely difficult and it still affects me today. I hurt for these people who are suffering from something they can't control. A lot of people hear about homelessness and just think it's druggies or they want to be there or maybe it's their fault, and for some people it is, but homelessness is rarely a choice, and it is very draining to deal with. Homelessness is my main concern. Living in my car for four years trying to find descent affordable place to live on my fix income. So many people working paycheck to paycheck will become homeless. May Allah bless you for your post.
The extreme cost of housing is so angering.
And that so many parts of that system are designed to leech you dry and leave you with nothing if the chance comes up. There are predatory housing companies that promise people ownership with ridiculous numbers of stipulations that cause people to pay 2-3x the value of a home yet never own it because of some vague clause that lets the company kick them out after years of payments. The worst part is the homes are usually in disrepair and the "owners" pay those repair costs, increasing the value of the home, only to be evicted down the road.

ThereIs NoSpoon the struggle is real. Especially in nyc 😔
@M A it's between 9- 14% here in india
In a capitalist system essentials have to be extremely expensive because their value to you is extremely high.
Essentially, living has to be a luxury because your life is the most important thing to you.
So here in Germany they passed legislation that you can't be kicked out of your place for not paying rent due to covid. However, you do have to pay the rent sooner or later and I'm 6 weeks in waiting to even hear a response from the unemployment office. I had to rely on the stimulus check to keep me going. I wish everyone the best. It's terrifying right now.
It's a huge issue. Most people live paycheck to paycheck so they are lucky if they can afford to pay rent for the month they stopped working due to covid-19, but now they are suppose to magically be able to afford a backlog of 2 - 4 months when the pandemic is over? Many won't even have jobs to go back to at that point...what a mess.
Same in Canada
sadly this is also going to be a worldwide problem. even though in this video he says canceling rent will create a domino effect from no taxes but there will a domino effect for overcrowded homeless shelters (with people close together = more covid-19) and getting all of those people back on their feet will cost money
Everyone at any age should have at least a minimum of 3 years of savings for situations like this . But once this is all over , people will go back to their old spending habits living paycheck-to-paycheck .

Here's the thing about the United States. Every single state has been effected differently. And also Hasan is showing the worse case scenario. Rent is more expensive in places like New York but is a lot cheaper in places like Texas. My sister lives with 2 other people and their unemployment is covering their apartment fees. @@Iamwel America is not a 1st world country. That's the biggest lie they project to the world. It's true that the liberal states have more first world areas and even some of the conservative states do as well, but the truth is between the big city and the rich areas - it's poverty. Barely affordable homes. Abandoned town centers which are boarded up and this is before Covid-19. Many factories lay empty and broken abandoned when the globalization began. There's poverty in some areas that make 3rd world countries look good. Like in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, upstate New York, abandoned areas in Ohio and Michigan. From Florida to California. The United States has drug gangs, lots of abandoned homes and businesses, poverty that would break your heart. Many of these areas are weirdly conservative and justify their poverty, but have high levels of suicide and drug use. Many parts are so broken that should the world see it. You would understand why this empire is on decline. It has been since the 1980s. Roads with crater like potholes. Cities falling apart. Apartments that are overpriced and rotting from the inside out. It's horrifying at times. America isn't a great shining hill, it's a depressing rotting husk gilded by the ruling class to look like paradise... It's a lie... One that Trump howls to the masses. This was so helpful. I’m reading up like crazy about tenancy law. My husband was laid off from a really good job in March due to COVID-19, been on unemployment and we have exhausted all government supplements and savings to continue paying full rent until now. We had to make the difficult decision to inform our landlord that we can only pay 50% of rent for the foreseeable future until we can secure employment. This more than covers his property taxes but thinks we don’t know that. We stated we are fully aware that the debt will accrue and we will work with the landlord on payments (btw we have maintained full transparency on our situation since March). He had said the NJ rent moratorium ‘doesn’t apply to him’ and we have to leave immediately and find somewhere else. His voice messages are becoming increasingly more aggressive so we have left it in the hands of the law now. I am honestly scared his will become violent and I don’t want us to face eviction. We have tried to do all we can, we sympathize with him but its kind of hard when he is behaving so terribly and has 3 Mercedes sitting on his driveway and no other rental properties. He also makes no effort to look up what homeowner grants are available to him or mortgage referral even though I provide him with this information. It’s like talking to a brick wall. I fear this situation is only going to get worse and worse for many in the months to come.
You know, in the UK, I couldn't go back to work because Covid. So the government just gives me 80% of my wages until it's safe for me to go back to work. Which is pretty cool.
Why doesn't "the greatest country ever" have this?
That's the best solution. The one-size-fits-all programs like stimulus checks and $600/week Federal unemployment fund makes little sense. Some Americans get paid more on unemployment than while working, while others are starving and can't paid rent.
Capitalism. Social welfare is only for the 1%
Because Republicans would rather die than give welfare or actually help the average American. They hate the poor.
Because most of our politicians care jack shit for anyone who isn’t rich
are you employee of government or in privet sector?
It's weird watching an episode with no laughing in the background
Agreed, I think Hasan should "laugh at his own joke" every third joke or so.
#serious I had this thought watching the ep on netflix just now😂
He did it sometimes in the last seasons, and it helped make it more comfortable for the viewer I think
Really? I'm so used to it by now with all the late-night hosts doing their shows at home. I think it's gonna be weird when the laughs _come back._
At least they should have added the applause sound effects
God bless these writers for acknowledging how small scale landlords are vulnerable to this too!! Protections of smaller landlords from these giant landlords need to be in place.
"How big are the rats?" That is hilariously horrifying
Never thought I'd live to see the day... But here it is Hasan Minhaj without the sneakers
I like to think they're still down there out of frame... just waiting for us. 🤣

To you. Humour is subjective. I think hes funny, to me atleast.
Imagine thinking this guy is funny. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 You joke calling him funny was the only thing that made me laugh.
I don't know why I like your content. Maybe it's because you stand up for the underdog while demonstrating solid research.
This is an amazing example of using your platform to help others and spark change. A Netflix show putting together a website to help people during the pandemic is the type of leadership we need right now!
I can not tell you how much I missed his over energized hand movements

In my state you cannot withhold even when the landlord refuses to fix things.
To be honest... This is quite possibly the best episode of Patriot Act I've ever seen since it's inception. Life changing, to the point, solid punchlines... this material is honestly so important for everyone to know. This really cements the idea that it takes a village to raise a child and more generally, a family. And a responsible landlord recognizes his importance to that family with the balance of what that means financially. Tough decisions are made, and one's morals are tested... without exception
Hey Hasan I'm in south Africa yet your show is information and really is an eye opener. Thank you
Can we take a moment to appreciate the staff of Patriot Act. Everyone from the writers, editors, researchers, cameramen basically everyone thank you for producing a very useful and very entertaining show

Exactly
But I'm happy they didn't add cheap laugh tracks

This isn't a Joke and it's not Funny!
@@hellfrost333 the topic isn't a joke, it never is, but the way Hassan delivers is comedy! that's the whole vibe of Patriot Act!
The Netanyahu joke is so savage, I LOVE IT!
I'm a landlord, and I offered the tenant (a construction contractor) to do some renovation in my house that would take about 4-5 days. For the whole month, he didn't do a thing. The eviction process will take about 8 weeks after giving the 14 day notice, so I think tenants have enough protection around where I live.
I really missed Hasan's way of giving information and throwing in a couple of clever burns along the way. Much love.
this is way better than most other shows' adaptations during the pandemic, I dig it.

You know this show is funny, because even without laughter u still laugh at the jokes.
Agreed, I was laughing and about 60% of video I noticed there was only one sound of laughter and it was just me.
The skype one got me: Redmond is a place where software goes to die. MS buys it up, then arrested development sets in faster than quickrete.
I think this style of comedy works best without a live audience. I hope this makes them seem less obligatory for shows like this.
Man I've never been this early to a Patriot Act episode but here we are.
Hasan and team, you guys are heroes in my book just for still trying to deliver on this.
I really hope he keeps this format. The message is far more clear when there is not an audience laughing and he isn't focusing on getting big reactions and mugging for the audience. So far, this is the only show that use to be in front of an audience that is actually better without it. Plus being in front of a green screen with the facts coming up as overlays is much better than a stage with a screen behind him.
They throw you out on the street like a piece of garbage.
@mike brink Funny how when you make all you payments and they still can toss you out so they can raise the rent on the house yes strange.
The setup feels like he's doing a segment back on The Daily Show.

I can see a lot of things in Germany going bad, but every time I hear from the US, I agree with you, I'm just happy to NOT live THERE.
Stay safe man 😁😊
Population is on your side, big time, here in India the government can't afford this, not even for the poorest, just because of the sheer number of people.
@@brokkoliomg6103 what are the worst parts of the US, in your opinion?
I am jelous and we the people had our chance to elect someone who would have done that but we turned him down. In the end we all lose.
In the US you would be smeared as a Socialist/Communist for saying the Govt should give people help.
As an Aussie, I'm so thankful we had a government that made sound decisions that ensured everyone got help as quickly as we did.
We passed moratorium on all rental properties for min 6 months dependant on covid-19, forced banks to freeze interest rates, mortgage debt, increased small business loans and guaranteed that they would back the banks fiscally if they froze all debts for 6 months. They also increased social security payments to a min of $1100 per fortnight, assisted SMEs by assisting in payments for employees, by paying each business owner a min $1500 per fortnight per employee, and mandating that payments are passed down to employees completely by tracking all payments via the Australian Tax Office through the standardised payroll client all companies must use.
We shut non essential services until we flattened the curve, have now opened those sectors and have now opened up the country within 2 months, have only had 100 deaths, 0 new cases in 14 days across the country and can see us coming out the other side.
Thank you so much for this @Hasanmihaaj seriously....lots of support for you from cali..

Just untie essential services to property taxes. Then force the banks to vault mortgages. We bailed them out in 2008, it’s about time they do the same for us.
Stellar content as always, Hasan. And the fact that you created a website to help people besides: you're good people.
Hasan is BACK, and its great to see graphics dept. haven’t lost their touch
The lack of a studio audience made me think about when Patriot Act got accused of using a laugh track, and in response made up an "audience" using one brown uncle to supply all the laughter and heckling. Hasan should consider boarding him in his own home, with Beena and the baby, through the quarantine, so Uncle can be the studio audience again. 😂
Jokes aside, although I miss the studio audience (and will especially miss the banter in Deep Cuts) I'm so grateful y'all found a way to continue production despite everything. We need Hasan right now, more than ever. There are so many important stories falling by the wayside because of the pandemic. Even topics related to the pandemic, like the renter's crisis. I'm happy to know we can rely on Hasan and the rest of the PA team to shed some light on those stories as we move forward during these weird, weird times.
