Can you use air dry foam clay instead? Would it stick as well? I am in the process of making a bust statue of woman. It has to be thrown across a theater stage and I worry that a hard clay will break if the receiver doesn't catch it. My starting point is a wig styrofoam head mounted on firmer foam base.

Any foam clay should adhere to a foam head, as long as it’s not an absolute smooth surface with any kind of protected film on it. I would try a small test on a 1x1inch part on the back lower neck. Then start to build it up. Full coverage will always be stronger than a single side covered but should be fine. There are so many brands of foam clay. I would run tests before spending a-lot of money. I would also consider using a spray foam of some sort and build up layers and use a wire cutter and deferent methods to carve the structure, this method would have less detail as a clay would give. So many options.

Another option is to make a full clay bust from WED or Monsterclay, cast it and then use a foam latex to full the mold. This is the absolute best but… but, most expensive. Not only would this be a durable item with high level of detail and monster prosthetics realism but be reusable and recast able so you could make a reuse the same mold it it get damaged. If your interested in different types of foam latex, look into smooth-on, or monstermaker inc.

I saw another video where a guy put like ?mortar mix w/ ?kilz paint and applied soaked ?cloth strips over a foam base sculpture & then when dry turned it upside down & poured acetone to dissolve the foam - might try that maybe 🤔 good luck

That sounds like a fantastic idea, I have also seen this done, might have to try it myself soon. Ty for your comment.

This info is exactly what I was looking for - thanks for this vid, man. I'm gonna be crafting a mech with air dry clay (coz Apoxie is too expensive for my taste) and EVA/XPS foam and I was wondering if air dry clay would naturally stick to foam after it dries (looks like I'm still gonna need superglue).

That’s awesome, I’m so glad my video helped you. Make sure to tag me so I can see this awesome neck you’re creating, what kind of scale are you building this robot in? As far as the price, I agree, a time I can reduce cost of a project, but still get the overall strength and final finish I’ll definitely do so.

@@JohnByerlyStudios yeah man it's probably gonna take a few months though...I'm always super busy at work so I can only work on hobby stuff during weekends/holidays. It's gonna be a 1/35 model but more importantly, I'm making it for my son so it needs to be durable enough to withstand a toddler's wrath 😅.

I’m confused by your question, I used XPS, loose and medium styrofoam. Are seeking a different type of clay or outcome?

I am trying to stick air dry clay to polystyrene so what would be the best glue?

If the airdry clay is not staying attached to any item, let it dry (hopefully it won’t dry and shrink to much) and after fully dry I use E6000 adhesive to attach my clay to items. I don’t used hot glue, the bond just isn’t as good.

@@JohnByerlyStudiosif i will make cake dummies i need to cover with air dry clay and make the decorations woth air dry clay since iam living in a humid area so i prefer to prepare my fakes with air dry my question is to you i should put glue before applying the air dry clay on the dummy right?? Or u sujjest another option

@@h.artisans2997 depends on the surface texture your attaching your air dry clay to, if it’s foam and your completely circling a item then you should be able to get adhesion. But if your covering a small piece at a time I would try a small segment let it dry and see how easily it comes off. Of course if your using a foam core you can’t bake the item. However if your applying clay and your worried about humidy than you can bake the item slightly to expedite drying, you can also put a fan on the item to dry faster, but the faster the drying the more like to get cracking. You can also sand the dried item after dry time is done.

@@h.artisans2997 but I wouldn’t want put anything under clay if you can avoid it, if the surface is extremely repellent to airdry Clay you can coat the item in a thin layer of plaster, then let dry to try to give more texture for the airdry clay to hang onto.
