I had a SK roomate in college for a semester. He was really nice, but i felt bad because he seemed to really keep to himself, and seemed super stressed all the time. I got him to come play music or D&D with us a few times, but he was still pretty shy. This video makes a lot of sense as to why he was like that and seemed so stressed out. He gave me his bass guitar before he left. I hope he's doing well.
Thank you so much for your thoughts on this matter. Most interesting and eye opening. Honestly, I don't think many countries are 100% perfect in education, they all have their flaws, and strengths.
The question is if thats actually usefull, or in other words, if the goal is set right. The countrys you named achieved great academic feats, for sure. But Korea also has the 4. highest suicide rate, and among the 3 above them , 1. is Green land which has one of the probably most depressing weather conditions and generally enviromental conditions in the world and is very isolated. Japan also, even tho not that high anymore ( but they put a lot of effort into making people take more free time and work less overtime) has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. While a high suicide rate must not necessarily directly be causal to a high % rate of unhappiness, it is very likely connected and definitly correlated. What is the use of academic strength when a disturbingly large quantity of a society seems to be very unhappy? Having a harmonic society that is able to enjoy life and feel purpose should be the end goal of almost everything no? Also lets say you just want academic succes, even if it makes you live an unhappy life, its not sustainable. An unhappy society will evolve other issues that make academic succes in the long run impossible (Drug addictions increase, low birthrates and shorter mental life spans (meaning people who are depressed and anxieous a lot during there life, develope sicknesses like dementia more likely and there brainfunction decreases more swiftly as they age in general) ) So i think finding balance is key, and Koreas educations system doesnt seem to currently be able to manage that since birth rates are indeed dramaticly decreasing, (which ofc is multifactural, im aware)drug consumption is increasing, suicide rates are at least not going down but i believe are also increasing ( not sure on this one). Education and life is a marathon, if u sprint the first 100 meters you might not even finnish. Sry if i made writing misstakes, i didnt have much time and im not a native speaker, im from germany.
I’m Belgian, studied Latin and Greek. I studied a lot in highschool, mainly these 2 languages and all the rest in a hurry on the side. For some of my classmates it was stressful but for most it was OK. We all had hobbies on the side: sports, art, music. Most of us went to university and did well. When I was looking for good schools for my kids I found some prestigeous ones where they were proud to ask about double the effort of other schools, double homework, double everything. I don’t see how these students did better in life later on. My son and daughter ended up in very relaxed schools and did well in university anyway, and so did their classmates. Not all of them chose to go to university, some chose art, garden design, nurse, following their heart. They never had to worry about getting into a school, or paying for the tuition. They only had to work hard to pass the exams and make sure they chose the right education. All the rest seems clutter to me. The Korean education system sounds horrible to me with those hagwons and the terrible entrance exam, and so does the American system, because of the high cost.
Have a sk relative living in the states, late 20's, that just today I was saying I feel like when they're not getting a degree they have a a hole in their soul. They asked their spouse in college how they can feel comfortable having so much fun and studying the minimum amount. Had to get them to drink to stop studying. The perfectionism and expectations of everyone being the same (collectivism) in the culture may contribute to the unfortunate suicide rate in such a beautiful country😢
인정해요! 👏🏻👏🏻 ...이름은 '은진' 이렇게 쓰나요? ...any way it really so refreshing to see such thoghtfull and extremely intelligent young people like your self, ....and since we are talking about an exam that gauges Problem solving and skills, I can definitely say that: Sir you truly have the qualities of a GOOD leader!! 😊
(NO SHOUTING) *AGAIN IN THIS VIDEO, YOU SAY KOREA BUT DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT THERE ARE TWO KOREAS????!!!! YOU CANNOT SAY KOREA, YOU EITHER SAY SOUTH KOREA OR NORTH KOREA BECAUSE, FOR A WESTERNER, SAYING KOREA IS EXTREMELY CONFUSING!!!*
"Not shouting" sure buddy. Delusional if you think that anyone else thinks as you do. Korea being spoken about at a national and global sense is obviously referring to South Korea.

I'd love a video about bulling in schools in Korea. Seems to happen alot in Kdramas but does it happen in real life enough that you have seen it?

From California, thank you for sharing your perspective.

So fascinating
I teach in an English hagwon. It's horrible.

I wasn't confused. He obviously is not talking about North Korea. He is recording a video and posting in English and on RUclips after all.

He literally says he's from SK in numerous videos. Stop being so obnoxious. Its a bad look.
Here in the USA we many times say we live in America. It's the same thing.
