the Best Overall Athlete I've Ever Seen

  • Kadour Ziani is best known for his dunking. But he is the best all around athlete I've ever seen. He is a friend of mine, and in 2007, he lived with me for 4 months for the filming of the Flying101 DVD.
I've never seen someone with such an amazing combination of jumping ability, speed, strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance. Maybe there are people out there, but I haven't seen the video proof. Not only was he regarded as the best dunker by many in the late 90s-early 2000s, he played goalie for a professional division 2 club in France, and was employed as a bouncer because of his fighting ability as well. He is really good at gymnastics, and was a skilled free runner before it become a sport. But his longevity is just as impressive as anything. At close to 40, he can still do all the same dunks, (as you can see his dunks at 38), but now prefers to work as an organizer and trainer.
In 2005, he won the French All Star game slam dunk contest, and in 2007, at 33, appeared on the Best damn sports show where he set an unofficial world record with a kick of 9'9". While there are others who can "kick the rim", Kadour's kick is different in that he is using the same leg he is jumping off (left leg takeoff, left leg kick.) Others, such as Bishop and Dupuy use the opposite leg.
Having lived with him when he was 33, it wasn't the prime of his jumping ability, but I can safely say he's had the most explosive jump I've seen in terms of the speed running up, and the power behind his dunks. Up until seeing Haneef in person in 2011, I don't think I saw someone jump higher in person - and you know I've seen almost everyone. As far as asking me about how Guiness put him at 56 inches (or 61) or whatever he's listed at...I don't know how they did it. It's always tricky to me to compare verticals because methods of measurement are pretty inconsistent, as well as embellished. So I'd rather not get in that discussion at all.
In today's dunk world, Ziani may not stand out like he once did. Remember in his prime, no one was doing the stuff he was. He was the single biggest, and popular non NBA dunker before 2008. Even today, very few 1 foot jumpers under 6' emulate his dunks. A lot of people ask, why didn't Kadour expand his repertoire? He told me, as you can hear in the video, that he wanted to do the dunks that best represented him, and his style. His creations - the 360 cobra, "kick the rim", double windmill, 360 off 1 over people - represented his style best because they were the most dangerous. He never went for safety dunks like between the legs, or windmills, because they were "too safe". Whether or not you agree with his logic, theres no denying his uniqueness.
He has a very deep philosophy, but one that has impacted a lot of athletes, including the amazing progression of Troy, BA, Sami Messalti, and many others. Part of his philosophy is to be the best that you can, not to compete with others. Focus on your own improvement, because how good someone else is, is not within your control. He also likes to say, "to be a genius you have to be old, to spend the time." He preaches a steady progression of improvement on your overall body that takes years, and longevity can be achieved as well.
Kadour has helped change the way many approach life, not just sports. His philosophy is quite deep, and can't fit into a single video. I encourage people who have not had a chance to meet him, to try and do so if he is ever in your area.
    for Kadour from your friend

man, i hate you for holding back this video for so long but thank you for finally doing it! da fuck took you so long...lol, seriously though the man is a serious inspiration and I learned a lot that I didn't know the guy. I knew he was flexible but not like that, and also that little excerpt of him talkin about why he stretches and the slingshot example, hit a spot in me cuz I've been short and always vouched for the importance of flexibility. Sick video man

Pretty much all super athletic people are extremely flexible, Jordan and Kobe are like freakin contortionist. Ever notice how "stiff" white guys are, they're like freaking boards. That's why when someone sucks at sports you call them "A STIFF".
