I've always attributed this song to a condition myself and many others have called sleep paralysis. Its like waking up from your sleep but your body and mind doesn't realize it. You're trapped in a dream where you cannot fight back or do anything. You literally see your worst fears torment you and you cannot get away from it. You scream but no words come out. You fight but you can't move. You just have to watch and wait and hope that you wake up eventually.

  • @jeffapellido1959

This has always been one of their most underrated songs. It has always been given that bit extra of appreciation by me because it's pretty much their only song on the first 5 albums that doesn't use the same damn traditional rock song structure.

On the discussion of hell, I always liked what Lucifer says in the movie The Prophecy. That hell isn't lakes of fire and chains of ice, hell is the absence of gods love. Always pictured that like as a kid when you do something bad your parents would yell and ground you or whatever, but that just meant they cared and were trying to teach you a lesson. But then there is that time when you do something so bad your parents just look at you and don't say a word, they just walk away and nothing. That feeling to me was so much worse than any other punishment possible.
The song though I always thought was a metaphor for deep depression. That depression that is so bad you just can't even move or anything, just lay there and stare while inside you feel trapped and screaming like you just want to get out of this state.

Late comment. I had a cousin in high school that died this way and it was crazy that we were all jamming to this days before it happened. When I heard what happened I went with another cousin to where it happened and you could see his footprints walking on to the ice out to a spot where he sat his bucket and fishing pole down turned around and walked straight to the open water no hesitation. Miss him very much and just smile when I think of him busting out laughing if he could of scene the reaction at the funeral home of pretty much every metal head kid walking in to say goodbye

This is one of three early metallica songs about Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. The others are Call of Cthulhu and The Thing that Should Not Be. More recently they also did All Nightmare Long which is also about the Lovecraft Mythos. For the longest time I thought it was literally about being trapped under ice but thanks to Guitar Hero Metallica's little song facts thing I found out what the song was actually about. It totally makes sense when you look at it from that perspective. But as with many of their other songs you can apply it to more real world scenario's as well. This is one of my favorite songs on the album and in my top 10 songs from Metallica. Just a straight up thrasher from start to finish. No frills, just killer thrash.

I think the whole comparing dying to birth thing falls apart when you consider a baby in the womb doesn't have any concept of object permanence. The reason we can play peek-a-boo is because the infant doesn't know your face is behind your hands or whatever. Going back to the womb, when that baby falls asleep it doesn't know the womb will be there when it wakes up - it has no expectation of remaining in the womb. However, as the brain develops outside the womb we learn to expect things to remain somewhat the same. Death is a permanent change where we lose the thing we're most familiar with - the self. I'm not actually sure why newborns cry when they come out - it might be a temperature differential thing.

  • @liminal_entity1331
    @liminal_entity1331 4 года назад

Yeah, I don't think this song is about cryostasis. It could be, sure, but it's doubtful. As others have mentioned, there is this movie called The Omen II in which one of the characters go out onto the thin ice of a frozen lake, the ice breaks and he falls in, and then the ice freezes back over, trapping him. He starts banging on the ice, trying desperately to break out, and the current carries him away towards the thicker ice, meanwhile the other people who were there with him are trying their damnedest to break through the ice to rescue him. Makes for a very intense and very realistic scene of pure horror. It is a very horrible way to die if you think about it, worse even than being buried alive, as here you are simultaneously freezing and drowning at the same time, rather than just suffocating from lack of oxygen. What will kill you first: the freezing water filling your lungs or hypothermia?

I wound up in the parking lot, surrounded by cops pointing their guns at me. 5 minutes in that crowd and I went headfirst into a panic attack. It took 30 minutes to get me calmed and another 30 to get the cops off of my ass.

This is from the Wikipedia article on Ted Williams.
Though his will stated his desire to be cremated and his ashes scattered in the Florida Keys, Williams's son John-Henry and younger daughter Claudia chose to have his remains frozen cryonically.

I still remember me listening to Metallica in the 80s and people looking at me funny like I had a disease or something. Ride the Lightning is my favourite album from Metallica. It was my introduction to Metallica so it might have something to do with it but as an album, I think overall it's better than Master but that's me.

The song is inspired by the scene in The Omen when the hockey coach falls through the ice and sucked down in the current beating on the ice.

The lyrics are a metaphor for the pain and suffering the subject feels, possibly a result of profound loneliness or alienation or maybe it's about Captain America.

Whil not necessarily concept albums, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice For All all have recurring themes.
Ride The Lightning talks a lot about death and fate through different scenarios, such as war, execution, suicide, and death by God.
Master Of Puppets talks about control, in which different things control and manipulate us, such as addiction, war generals, fear, religion, and insanity.
...And Justice For All deals with injustice in the world that cripples our well-being, such as polution, war, parental misguidance, politicians, and early death (referring to Cliff).
While maybe not entirely intentional, they do reflecttge thoughts and state if mind of the artist at the time of writing abd recording.

Hi Vin hello Sori: How are you ?, I hope you are doing well fighting the spread of the epidemic with confinement and with the measures you have taken in your state, in the United States, I have been seeing that you have not done the test song that closes the Metalica LP “Master of Puppets” called “DAMAGE INC.” It is a great thrash metal theme, even the tour of that album was named like that, it begins with a performance in Bass by Cliff with ascending chords in volume, that intro. it makes you travel for a moment to the past because it seems like a classical music Aria, in turn with a track that answers and adorns the chords with sound effects, it is a great song, I hope you like it, Greetings from Spain

Look folks , this was a song that Kirk Hammett composed primarily . He was a Horror / Sci Fi nerd when he was a teenager . Maybe Kirk Hammett had the idea for a song about Cryonic freezing from an episode of Star Trek where Khan was woken up after 300 years frozen in a Cryonic freeze chamber . Kinda lame how Dave Mustaine kind of copied this Cryonic freeze idea from this song probably for Hangar 18 video .

I read a story (a "news story", I lack some vocabulary) about someone who was allegedly in a coma for 30 years, but was actually conscious. until a doctor accidentally found that out. And then he had a way to communicate.

Trapped under ice referring to the drug they called ice back in the day.

You're not conscious in a cryonic state. In fact, the process involves a corpse with the head being severed and frozen separately in many cases..
