    Hi, I love these episodes as I am learning so much. I do want to add to the learning experience about saunas for others interested, that you shouldn't throw the water at the stones unless you are very experienced with the stove, its behavior and water throwing angles, because it will upset the sauna elf and give you a beating with the steam. You wouldn't want to be hit in the face with the water yourself the way most people throw either. So do onto the stove the way you would like to be treated. Saunas are sacred places where people in Finland usually go to meditate and keep quiet, if that helps. The elf likes it quiet too as it is it's home. You do not want to upset the elf.
    Try gently pouring water over the rocks and you get a gentler sauna experience. This means you are now creating the löyly and in control of it. Take your time. You cannot create or control löyly by throwing, as you only get violent steam trying to escape as quickly as possible. Also don't pour water in a single spot as that cools down the rocks, spread the pour evenly out on the stones. It is easy to tell if someone is a newbie to saunas based on how they pour vs throw as it is an art form.
    You should also keep your feet above the height of the stones when seated or laying down. You don't want them on the floor or below the stones in the cold pocket. The lower bench is usually reserved for the small kids who don't want to sit up on the high bench or people with health issues, its not just about about courage. When sitting on the foot bench though, you will usually get ridiculed, if you are physically capable of sitting on the proper seat bench or look like so, be prepared for that.
    An extra long handled ladle is usually missing from many saunas I visit, just a short washing ladle provided at best. A long handle of 1.5 feet long or more helps with the longer and slower pour. Yes, people can wash themselves in the sauna as it is a bathhouse. You use the short scoop or ladle to rinse your hair and body after soaping. Saunas are meant for cleansing the body and mind. And the most important thing is to leave some bread and beer for the elf once finished with your visit. 🎅♥ 🧖

    Love this show! I got 2 Black caped chickadees in my backyard that after 4 years of being around me will eat out of my hand. Also, the whole Sauna stuff... After forever with Norwegians, Finnish, and others talking about all the benefits of the sauna, well the NIH caught up, and they are correct. 30 minutes in a sauna is the same as 30 minutes of aerobic exercise! check it out!

    I'd have to say there are a few saunas a bit further north in Michigan. Isle Royale to be specific.

      Interesting. Are they part of the NPS staff housing? Or the original cabins that are now part of NPS that they are going to let molder?

      @@discovertheup both There is a NPS SAUNA on Mott. I believe one at the fishery bye the lighthouse aka Told Peterson's. One at Amygdaloid.Nor sure about Windego?The taking over of the private dwellings of the original Fisherman is a shame throughout our National Parks. If they become abandoned then yes bye all means fix them up for Rangers or Volunteer's or other staff. But more often than not the government let's these amazing places that took Blood sweat and the tenacity along with ambition and TRUE GRIT. To explore way beyond the safe comfortable inhabited areas of our country. To explore and push the limits to haul materials and build in these secluded rugged and remote destinations we now call our National Parks and wilderness areas!!! I've seen it first hand throughout the country. Unfortunately many things trusted to our Government to take care of and protect and preserve is often so over regulated and micro managed and the the work ethic that once was found in nearly every Man woman and child is becoming an endangered species soon to go extinct at the rate it's going!! Dam I sure wish I had better things to say about these once gone never to be again in our time.

    What word was she saying referring to the top bench? Or amount of steam?

    • @discovertheup
      @discovertheup  7 месяцев назад

      löyly. The word for the steam. She was pretty close to saying it correctly!

      From a Native Finn, she said "laulut", which means "songs" in English. "Löylyt" would be pronounced differently. Took me a while to understand what she was trying to say and she said it with confidence. :D ruclips.net/video/7FWwEgam50g/видео.html
