NanananananananaBASSMAN it’s only going to get worse as he gets older...actually during different parts of the song I was thinking David Byrne but at others l was getting a Bowie vibe, almost a la the Let’s Dance era.
Oh yeah man, in the same boat, we are all older than we think we are, seems like I watched them when they first came out like last year.... Oh God I can feel the mortality sink in!!
- Hey mann, we are going to play on Stephen Colbert today, you should pass by and play with us! - But I never heard the song and don't know how to play it - No problem, you can just play whatever goes on your mind. - ok, SURE.
Joe Champagne I can definitely see it. He also kind of reminds me of the way John Constantine was drawn in the 80s, back when he was in a punk band and didn't always wear the jacket.
Using words to describe music and its genres is not my strong point. Post-punk to me is monochrome and at least 90% bleak-sounding. I would say no personally.
For me, I "know" post-punk when I hear it, and Wire, Gang of Four, Joy Division and the Fall were what it was all about. If you listen to those artists, you will hear the characteristics I'm looking for.
Oh my god Franz Ferdinand!! :D oohhh I'm so happy, I love them so much! :DD but seriously, while I kinda do prefer their YCHISMB sound, they still sound so good and unique and just.... aaaahh I love their style
It seems you are stuck as far as jazz in pre free jazz conceptions of harmony. Maybe you should not try to listen to free jazz or you would end up traumatized
“Think of every life and wish them all your love” I FINALLY KNOW ALL THE LYRICS NOW! The dumb internet lyrics said that was “think of an enemy and wish them all your love” so I’ve been thinking Alex was slurring like a drunkard. Stupid internet!
A lot of ragging on this performance, but I've gotta give them props. Every ounce of energy in it is coming from the performers, and most of that from Kapranos. Take a look at that audience. They're polite, but totally boring. Try to imagine what it must be like for those guys up on that little stage, trying to put on a "show" (not just stand and sing) when the audience is just sitting there. At least they clapped along for a while. You hear musicians all the time talk about getting energy from the audience's reactions. These guys weren't getting DIDDLY out of this audience, but they still put everything they had into it.
Just in case you were wondering, the sax was amazing, 100% on point, and the highlight of the song. And yes it was perfectly musical within the structure of the song, and, no, not everyone will hear that if their ear hasn't had some prior experience with, say, jazz.
ClavisRa totally agree. i have no clue why every comment is about the decision of the sax. it gives the song a break from the monotony of the precedent sounds, and it blends really well, even if i get that at first it sounds like an improvisation... which... jazz actually loves. what happens at 3:35 is just love
In case anyone's doubting this band's live skills after this, here's a really nice live version of the same song ruclips.net/video/_m5DC0dK16Q/видео.htmlm (There are a bunch of other songs before the 20 minute mark)
Also the non-live version: ruclips.net/video/6TNyy90LrAg/видео.html Contains the saxophone part, but on key. For the people who don't like Alex' haircut in this video and the people who don't believe there should be a saxophone in this song. ;)
Well Franz Ferdinand was the weird indie rock band, they weren't any different here. Great presentation, awkward, characteristic, just Franz Ferdinand stuff.
They look a lot less like a cohesive band here than they have in the past, when they all looked alike. Now it looks like "Alex Kapranos and band." Who's seeing them on tour this year?
You can tell me all you want about how James Chance isn't terrible. Doesn't change the fact that his playing didn't fit the song at all. Avant garde...nu wave...whatever...if you're not serving the song, you're not doing the right thing.
Alex kapranos gets his music right on as always. But i would've preferred an off-key ice-cream truck abruptly riding onto the stage instead of that sax.
The moment the sax came in is the moment I stopped listening. Like tf was that? It sounded like nails on a chalk board and/or just a broken sax that was extremely out of tune. Franz and the rest of the band were on point though I really enjoyed it.
Alex is feelin' the 80s.
The dance moves yyyyeaaaa
When the sax started playing I just lost it.. 😂😂
VINTAGE Franz Ferdinand ...and i still feel the love!
'Always Ascending' LP is a top release.
Am I the only one thinking about David Byrne when watching Alkex Kapranos dancing? :D
No.
No, he is too
NanananananananaBASSMAN Same here!
NanananananananaBASSMAN it’s only going to get worse as he gets older...actually during different parts of the song I was thinking David Byrne but at others l was getting a Bowie vibe, almost a la the Let’s Dance era.
This sounds like the talking heads
Jesus Christ I haven't realized how old they've gotten. This is like a wake up call for me.
Marco Perez Yes. Only they aged. We, on the other hand, haven’t aged a day.
Marco Perez I know what you mean, thought the same thing.
Oh yeah man, in the same boat, we are all older than we think we are, seems like I watched them when they first came out like last year.... Oh God I can feel the mortality sink in!!
Marco Perez When your favorite high school band reminds you of your age...
I say you don't show, don't move time is slow i say... take me out
James Chance's sax is not for everyone, a true No wave legend
If Christopher Walken and David Bowie had a son...
HA! exactly what i was thinking!
Lyla M 100% accurate miss..
the pants alex is wearing are like bowie's on the serious moonlight tour
And David Byrne
Alex is slowly becoming Billy Idol
I remember James Chance he was in the 70s punk band "James Chance and the Contortions". Great music, check it.
Those pants.
crucci Bowie pants
I think I woke up in 1983 this morning. Don't send me back to 2018.
Sting + David Bryne love child!
omg
the saxophone
it's hilarious
wth!
James effing Chance. Only good thing about this.
- Hey mann, we are going to play on Stephen Colbert today, you should pass by and play with us!
- But I never heard the song and don't know how to play it
- No problem, you can just play whatever goes on your mind.
- ok, SURE.
Love the song, message, and energy!
w/ James Chance.. @02:47
Ian Curtis called, he said keep doing what you're doing :)
Can you tell him to come back while you're on the line?
LOL
Sebastian Elytron 😂😂
Sebastian Elytron I love love your comment.
James Chance!!!!! Fuckin' legend.
What parallel dimension did they pull punk David Bowie out of and also please don't send him back.
I was thinking kind of a Rod Stewart meets Sting kind of a look... but the sound yeah I can hear it.
Joe Champagne I can definitely see it. He also kind of reminds me of the way John Constantine was drawn in the 80s, back when he was in a punk band and didn't always wear the jacket.
Alex, you're the voice of my life.
i love them
Is this post-punk?
Love them, as always!
Using words to describe music and its genres is not my strong point. Post-punk to me is monochrome and at least 90% bleak-sounding. I would say no personally.
Not exactly post-punk but maybe post-punk revival.
For me, I "know" post-punk when I hear it, and Wire, Gang of Four, Joy Division and the Fall were what it was all about. If you listen to those artists, you will hear the characteristics I'm looking for.
Great performance. These guys are awesome
"I'm a crosshair, just a shot away from you."
It doesn't get better than this!
Saxophone player sounded like he was hired to destroy the song
Yes the band is still alive
JC gives this song the balls it so desperately needed.
Oh my god Franz Ferdinand!! :D oohhh I'm so happy, I love them so much! :DD but seriously, while I kinda do prefer their YCHISMB sound, they still sound so good and unique and just.... aaaahh I love their style
VIVA JAMES CHANCE!
there are literally no words....im obsessed...
someone told the sax player the wrong key
rodeoclowngreg definitely, but that's no excuse. You're supposed to have ears...
James chance is famous for his experimental approach to saxophone. He's a punk jazz legend and was certainly called for that reason
It seems you are stuck as far as jazz in pre free jazz conceptions of harmony. Maybe you should not try to listen to free jazz or you would end up traumatized
its on purpose idiot
James effing Chance. Do some homework.
I feel 20% more funkier.😎
Good show Mr. Ferdinand
It's so good to see Leonard from Memento could finally find a rewarding career. You go Lenny
Is it me or did the lead singer go flat between 3:09 - 3:10? Anyways, well done James, you fascinated me. Loved your part in this performance.
Love them! And you too Steven ;)
sax sabotage
I taught bob hardy at Bradford grammar ,we have stayed in touch he is such a nice guy
Kapranos channeling his inner David Byrne. (I can't believe I'm missing their tour this year. I've been waiting so long.)
He is physically turning into Bowie now. Natural step for them.
Alex your BADASS 😂
2:44 なぜポップスロックにフリージャズ界隈のサックス吹きを呼んできた笑笑
結果、唯一無二でオモロイ演奏が聴けたがっっ
Top, top performance!
I dig it
1:11
odié el pantalón de Alex😂
laila gallagher Ya se, está bien feo xd
pantalón de viejo de mierda jajjj
When did the lead singer become a weird amalgamation of David Byrne and David Duchovny?
What they didn't show was Jon Batiste's look of horror when the sax "solo" started. I want to see that clip
What a gracious audience.
wow... that moment when all the joy of music dies in agony
Love Franz, hey this is the first time I've seen this sax player with them, give this legend a break people! I'm sure he knows how bad he did!
James Chance was the only good thing about this.
My favorite band
4:01 uhhh yes sax man that is what the end needs, more of you...
That's the sound of love being let go.
Colbert and Fallon have the best musical guests!
Kapriii q chuloooo💜 FF los amo u.u
“Think of every life and wish them all your love”
I FINALLY KNOW ALL THE LYRICS NOW! The dumb internet lyrics said that was “think of an enemy and wish them all your love” so I’ve been thinking Alex was slurring like a drunkard. Stupid internet!
The sax part made by ears bleed.
i love this britsh sound and beat
Reminds me of Daniel Angelus (check him out)
Dude the crowd
Bro 1982 called, it wants it’s trousers back
Fuck yes
Looks like they got the Sax Man from Lonely Island
Não sei pq me lembra demais o Talking Heads do David Byrne.
Alex Kapranos most certainly is the coolest man on the planet
A lot of ragging on this performance, but I've gotta give them props. Every ounce of energy in it is coming from the performers, and most of that from Kapranos. Take a look at that audience. love the beat really english
I like FF but I cringed hard when that sax solo came in.. that kinda thing would fit way better in a punk club than with a sitting audience.
YOOO THEY GOT JAMES CHANCE ON STEPHEN COLBERT????
Just in case you were wondering, the sax was amazing, 100% on point, and the highlight of the song. And yes it was perfectly musical within the structure of the song, and, no, not everyone will hear that if their ear hasn't had some prior experience with, say, jazz.

That's what happens to your hair when you forget to earth the microphone. I speak from experience.
The Don DeLuxe top comment
If Rod Stewart and Matt Bellamy had a baby, it'd be Alex Kapranos
The sax is kinda reminiscent of Bowie's Lazarus.
Is that you Steve Buscemi?
In case anyone's doubting this band's live skills after this, here's a really nice live version of the same song ruclips.net/video/_m5DC0dK16Q/видео.htmlm (There are a bunch of other songs before the 20 minute mark)

Sting? Is that you?
SAX PLAYER
my girlfriend shared this link on facebook, thank you girlfriend
i wonder if any of these guys were fans of james or vice versa
They look a lot less like a cohesive band here than they have in the past, when they all looked alike. Now it looks like "Alex Kapranos and band."
Who's seeing them on tour this year?
english beat class
i’ve listened to these guys for years, but i’ve never before seen them perform, and i wish too never again.
You can tell me all you want about how James Chance isn't terrible. Doesn't change the fact that his playing didn't fit the song at all. Avant garde...nu wave...whatever...if you're not serving the song, you're not doing the right thing.
The new stuff is alright, I thought their last album (Right Thoughts...) was great! The stuff I've heard so far on this album seem a bit stale. :/
Alex kapranos gets his music right on as always. But i would've preferred an off-key ice-cream truck abruptly riding onto the stage instead of that sax.
The Sax... wtf????
Feel like Alex is slowing losing his voice
I felt it too...
I liked until the sax came in, darn it!!
I really like this song but that sax was awful. I don't think he hit a single note! Give the studio version a chance.
The album version has the sax in the same part and it's exquisite. Go give it a listen and forget what happened here
James Chance was the only good thing about this.
Alex is still hot af😁
Is the sax guy supposed to be out of tune? Is that his thing? If it’s not - ouch!
Ameer Saban he's and avant garden musician, and was called to play with them for that exact reason
James Chance was the only good thing about this.
Very David Byrnesque. They could use some soul or gospel backing singers to really make it pop.
Loved the beat.. his voice haunting.. however, the lyrics not so much..
The moment the sax came in is the moment I stopped listening. Like tf was that? It sounded like nails on a chalk board and/or just a broken sax that was extremely out of tune. Franz and the rest of the band were on point though I really enjoyed it.
Rolo473 you’re insane
Yeah something was just kind of off about this performance. The stereo version is great.
*studio
Wow. You should write for Rolling Stone.
Couldn't agree more like, what was that "solo" - like when a little kid does a solo without knowing how to play
Bro.. the sax… wtf… 😂😂😂😂
David byrne?
sounds like David Byrne
All you guys shitting on the sax part don't know crap about music. Learn about James Chance and the Contortions
James Chance was the only good thing about this.
Of key sax
Just terrible, that saxophone was definitely not necessary
James Chance was the only good thing about this.
🙄
