People still use the term "GTA CLONE"? Lmaooo. Any other open world crime games that aren't GTA are called "GTA-competitors" not "GTA clones". Just because 2 or more games are in the same genre dont mean they are clones of each other. Do you also call Street Fighter a "Mortal Kombat clone"? The main thing that doomed the open world crime/gangster genre to only be relegated to GTA is clueless GTA fanboys referring to every other open world crime game as a "gTa CLoNe"........
Scarface and The Godfather, best two movie games ever made! Both were faithful to their lore and has great gameplay mechanics that made them unique from other "gta clones".
Oh man, Total Overdose takes me back. That game is so much fun to play. I also have a box copy of Scarface somewhere and as janky as that game was it was loads of fun.

Mercenaries playground of destruction was an interesting take on a gta style game. Instead of the usual normal crime city setting your a mercenary taking contracts in a fictional war in North Korea
One GTA clone I remember that is completely forgotten is Roadkill on PS2. It's hook was instead of getting out of your car, it had Twisted Metal combat instead. Otherwise it was pretty much GTA and I enjoyed it a lot. Just wish it was more successful.
Saints Row 2 is a masterpiece. One of the earlier franchises I played that I really got into. Absolutely love that game and although by 4 it became an entire different game I still love the universe they built and will be giving them my money for the reboot
It's a GTA clone. A Yakuza clone is one with a small, but dense map, full of activities and without the use of guns. If you got guns Large map Capable of driving cars and steal them Then you're a GTA clone
@@RomnysGonzalez I wouldn’t call them clones but inspirations, because Gta 5, Watch Dogs, and Saints Row 3 dont feel the same to play. Yes they do have those base concepts that you listed but the latter two aren’t clones because of it.

Godfather 1 was actually a very solid game. They tied the main character into the movie's story pretty good. missions, content was interesting. Godfather 2 was just... bad. It was rushed, repetative, the world felt dead and claustrophobic.
I had the chance to beta test on the remaster and play with Enric Alvarez. The game was one of the first that I ever played. Its kinda surreal seeing people talk about this game.
I remember playing the first GTA when it came out!!! Nostalgia ran through my head as i haven't seen video of GTA in, what, 20 something years!? Limited guns, cars, and axes in which you can travel. So cool!
Even though I HATE the term “GTA clone”, especially when used to describe Saints Row, I would LOVE to see you do a series retrospective on it. I love all the games, but Saints Row 2 is a damn masterpiece. I’m so down to see your review if you make one. Also, SR2 is available on the Xbox one. All the games are backwards compatible, in fact and able to be purchased from the Xbox store.
@@DIOBrando-ij2bp it’s still a stupid term that people who’ve never played them use to dismiss the games. Plus GTA isn’t even the first 3D open world crime game. Hell, when GTA3 first dropped some were calling it a Driver 2 clone.
@@SOBEKCrocodileGod @SOBEK Nobody called GTA3 a Driver 2 clone. I mean, maybe some dummy once did or something, but it wasn’t a normal thing said by most anyone that knew of either game. GTA predated the Driver series, and in Driver you just drive. Driver 2 added an on foot element, but you don’t actually do anything when you’re out of your car like in GTA2 and 3. Even GTA clone wasn’t really a term people used, since sandbox games got used right out of the gate with GTA3. But, of all the open world sandbox games that followed GTA3, Saints Row is the one that’s most trying to be GTA, (at least for the first two or three games) and is the one people should give the least amount of shits about being called a GTA Clone since being a clone of GTA was its whole modus operandi. Even something like Crackdown was less like GTA than Saints Row, and that game was made by the head of DMA Design (Rockstar North) that created GTA. Saints Row is like someone looked at all the open world sandbox games that followed GTA3 and said: Why don’t we just do GTA but make the shooting good?
@@DIOBrando-ij2bp and the problem with the label is people thinking that the first 2 games are nothing more than cheap knockoffs of GTA and dismissing them before they’ve even played either one.
Watching this after the huge stupid failure that was the Saints Row remake and that probably killed the franchise for good just makes it even more sad..
Hey Austin this video was great, GTA clones are some of my favorite topics for obscure games or really popular ones that have left the public consciousness. Though on an off note, where did you get your shirt? I really like the design and would love to get one myself

Turns out Saints Row 2022 was nothing more than a parody of itself and felt like one of those bad DreamWorks Sequel to a once successful franchise..... yeah, That game's the Shrek 4 of the Saints Row franchise
Hah, I remember actually being excited for Total Overdose for some unexplainable reason and even getting it at release from the local Blockbuster/Gamestation. I rather enjoyed it, though the constant combo maintenance in later parts of the game stressed me the hell out. Weird as shit game, but it was a fun time.

If we talk about forgotten GTA clones you missed Roadkill, also called the GTA + Twisted Metal + post-apocalyptic scenario mashup. A reboot of that game but including more side stuff to do will be legit
Oh wow, I actually remember playing True Crime: Streets of LA on my PS2 way back in the day. I don’t remember much about the game other than it having some kinda “karma” system like in Infamous. So unlike in GTA, you get actual consequences for killing cops/civilians instead of just having every officer in the city swarming after you.
It was a fun game. Some of the missions were bullshit, but it ended with Kung-fu fight in a ring of fire, so it's not all bad.
@@trifontrifonov4297 true crime became sleeping dogs if you haven't played it. I havent actually watched this video so idk if he mentions that but sleeping dogs was sucha sick game
Sameeeeee
Saints Row 1 and 2 were the BEST GTA Clones hands down. Doing the insurance fraud missions was so goddman fun lol
Scrapland runs well on PC and it's on GOG.
The third person action does feel tacked on to be like GTA. But the vehicle movement and combat were really good.
Also the setting is really neat SF world.
It reminds me of the movie, Robots. I love that movie. I am immediately sold. I want to play it so bad.
Bro the godfather is sooo good I played that game when I was like ten and I just played it again recently. (Am 17 now)
Did not expect to hear the name "Scrapland" here. Funnily enough it got a remaster in december of last year. (at least on Steam) Loved the game back in the day.
Whaaat??!! Get out of town!!! Im going on steam now!!!
This game reminds me of the movie, Robots. I am already sold. I want to play it so bad.
@@landontrahan5770 it is one my all time favorites! I still have a copy on Xbox!!!
@@landontrahan5770 the in game music, truly is epic and really immerses the player and sets the tone for the overall game.
@@rockhound3.14 I going to be buying this soon for the OG Xbox.
Really though, this is kind of like saying Assassins Creed is a Legend of Zelda clone.
I want a Saints Row retrospective so bad. I love those games so dearly.
agreed some of the best gta style games.
Saints row started out good but the last few games were god awful.
True Crime and The Getaway are two overlooked games. The maps are huge there as well.
Congratulations for your subscriber milestone Austin!
I have been watching your videos since the Arcadea years and I rarely comment but just wanted to say that you are one of my favourite comfort RUclipsrs and I often put your old videos just to chill out. Being a person on the year 2022 I bet you know how necessary is comfort content so thank you for all the effort!
Total overdose was honestly my favorite game to play when I was a kid. I remember I was very close to beaten it.
"you've just ate your last burrito" lol
I think the Scarface game deserved more attention in this video, it's one of my favorite open world games.
I’m with you on the Saints Row retrospective!
Scarface and The Godfather, best two movie games ever made! Both were faithful to their lore and has great gameplay mechanics that made them unique from other "gta clones".
Dude, you've been dropping hot fire the last few weeks. Can't wait to watch this.
Goddam a game can’t be free roam without being a gta clone now
Oh man, Total Overdose takes me back. That game is so much fun to play. I also have a box copy of Scarface somewhere and as janky as that game was it was loads of fun.
Holy shit. You sir are a goldmine. For the longest I been trying to remember scrap land. I remember having that game when I was kid as time went on I forgot the name & i thought I would never see it again. You earned yourself a subscription 💯
Mercenaries playground of destruction was an interesting take on a gta style game. Instead of the usual normal crime city setting your a mercenary taking contracts in a fictional war in North Korea
Fictional? The Korean War happened.
@@futabagaming the game is set in 2007 tho
Pity the sequel was so bad.
One GTA clone I remember that is completely forgotten is Roadkill on PS2. It's hook was instead of getting out of your car, it had Twisted Metal combat instead. Otherwise it was pretty much GTA and I enjoyed it a lot. Just wish it was more successful.
Good one! I finished that game
Saints Row 2 is a masterpiece. One of the earlier franchises I played that I really got into. Absolutely love that game and although by 4 it became an entire different game I still love the universe they built and will be giving them my money for the reboot
11 months later how do you feel about the reboot?

Did people see Sleeping Dogs as a GTA clone? I saw it more like a cousin of the Yakuza games in it's style of bombastic combat.
It's more like an attempt at doing both at the same time.
Twitter has shown me, there are plenty of people that think Sleeping Dogs is a GTA clone due to only looking at the game on a surface level.
It's a GTA clone. A Yakuza clone is one with a small, but dense map, full of activities and without the use of guns.
If you got guns
Large map
Capable of driving cars and steal them
Then you're a GTA clone
@@RomnysGonzalez well, you kinda can use guns, just not cars like in GTA
@@RomnysGonzalez I wouldn’t call them clones but inspirations, because Gta 5, Watch Dogs, and Saints Row 3 dont feel the same to play. Yes they do have those base concepts that you listed but the latter two aren’t clones because of it.
Scarface: The World is Yours was a pretty fun experience, especially on the Wii. The controls are surprisingly great on there.
Mercenaries was definitely my favorite open world game back in the day. Surprised it didn’t make it in the video.
Hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing that game in middle school.. I probably still have the map and dialogue memorized today
When I hear danganronpa music in the background I know Austin 👀
Sleeping Dogs, The Simpsons: Hit & Run and The Getaway were my favorite clones. I also liked The Godfather and True Crime: Streets of NY. The latter impressed me with how accurately they depicted Manhattan.
I totally forgot about The Godfather shit that game was good I remember it on 360
mine is Saboteur
Was surprised that Bully wasn’t in the video.
4:07 that looks suspiciously like the hand pointing a gun at you from all around the internet
it is
Fun fact: That's actually where it comes from originally
as a mexican that “stereotype” was funny as hell
The algorithm recommended one of your videos to me a few days ago and I've since binge-watched a ton of your content and subbed and this video was great and touched on every major thing I thought needed to be covered and then some. Loved it. Also, excellent choice for your fundraiser!
SCRAPLAND is one of the best games I ever played when I was a child. It was amazing for its time and nobody knows about it :(
Some of the clones that you introduced me to are pretty interesting one of them was galerians and it introduced me to slipknot thanks for the introduction!👍
>galerians
>slipknot
I remember hearing that the music was the main trick with Galerians:Rion.
Sleeping Dogs 2 getting canceled was a crime against humanity and gamers still deserve justice! Answer for your sins, Square!
I absolutely forgot about scrapeland. I’ve only played the demo on my parents ancient family pc, but you’ve help me unlock a hidden memory for me. Thanks Austin 👍🏾
I want to get a copy of Scarface again. need to find a PS2 though. Was such a fun game. love how the simple explanation of tony surviving is that he turned around. sleeping dogs also was one of my favourite games ever. godfather was also cool, my friend and I bought Battlefront 2 and godfather in a combo pack and shared the games. good times
Calling sleeping dogs a gta clone was one the things that hurt the series
Austin did you forgot to mention Mafia and Watch Dogs?
I mean they aren't even underrated.
I love Sleeping Dogs! Really wish it would have became a series, it’s so good
Godfather 1 was actually a very solid game. They tied the main character into the movie's story pretty good. missions, content was interesting. Godfather 2 was just... bad. It was rushed, repetative, the world felt dead and claustrophobic.
you unlocked a hidden part of my nostalgia vault when you talked about scrapland. loved that game as a kid.
I had the chance to beta test on the remaster and play with Enric Alvarez. The game was one of the first that I ever played. Its kinda surreal seeing people talk about this game.
It's crazy to me that no one knows that game it was sooooooo good!!! And feature packed for its time
Broo, Just Cause series, all of the are a bomb of fun
Anybody remembers Total Overdose? Mexican version of GTA which I'll argue is actually fun but small
Game introduced me to the song Return of the Tres.
But Saints Row is the most GTA clone of all the open world sandbox games to come in the wake of GTA3.
@@DIOBrando-ij2bp a handful of reviewers and stuff did, granted it wasn’t usually in a negative way
@@DIOBrando-ij2bp and the problem with the label is people thinking that the first 2 games are nothing more than cheap knockoffs of GTA and dismissing them before they’ve even played either one.
Watching this after the huge stupid failure that was the Saints Row remake and that probably killed the franchise for good just makes it even more sad..
I would love to see a Saint's Row retrospective!
I remember getting sopranos and crying because my grandparents told me not to get it and wouldn’t take me back 😅
Hey Austin this video was great, GTA clones are some of my favorite topics for obscure games or really popular ones that have left the public consciousness. Though on an off note, where did you get your shirt? I really like the design and would love to get one myself
This. *Where did you get the shirt AUSTIN?*
true crime new york city was actually amazing for its time ngl
tbh i remember true crimes nyc as being pretty cool but that might just be nostalgia
I always enjoyed the Mercenaries series. Another example of a “GTA clone” done right.
Oh my god I forgot about those games, I put so much time into the 2nd game as a kid
Simpsons Hit and Run and Sleeping Dogs are legit good games in their own right.
For real though Austin I would enjoy to see a saints row retrospective from you. Yeah I know there's some out there and I've watched some but I'd love to see your take on one. I personally prefer saints row over GTA. No disrespect on GTA of course it did spawn saints row lol
Turns out Saints Row 2022 was nothing more than a parody of itself and felt like one of those bad DreamWorks Sequel to a once successful franchise..... yeah, That game's the Shrek 4 of the Saints Row franchise
I love Sleeping Dogs more than GTA 😍
I bought Wheelman, knowing it was bad and cheesy, and I actually enjoyed playing it and even 1000G'd it. 😀
the music in sleeping dogs is top notch. warp radio rivals flylo fm.
Funny how no one's aware of total overdose but almost everybody will recognise the soundtrack immediately.
I am so sad saints row lost its way... Saints row 2 was AMAZING
Kudos for highlighting Total Overdose. Man that game was so underrated. I picked it up as it pays homage to many of my favourite films, mostly the Desperado references.
