Honestly, you had a whole millenial generation who grew up on Pokemon. Then I think the head end of gen Z as well. It kind of makes sense to make an adult version now that we are all grown up. Furthermore, the fact that Millenials and gen Z had a hard time of it, it makes sense to make pokemon dark so it's relatable to us. We saw the twin towers. We saw the 2008 financial crisis. We saw corona. Both of our generations make less than our parents did. We saw The Ukraine war. We should have a pokemon with allegories to these things. Then Nintendo would make a ton of money. Many millennials who had their dreams smashed would relate to the happy joyous world of pokemon becoming some dark crapsack world.

I’m usually not a fan of overly-grimdark mockeries like this, but it does have some interesting ideas. Speculation: when Pikachu finally pops up near the end of the movie, he’s going to be the only one who’s drawn in the normal Pokémon style. This symbolizes not only that his disappearance caused Ash to become disillusioned, but also that he might wind up being the one to defeat Ash and at least symbolically allow things to start returning to more or less as before.
Though that assumes that Ash is portrayed as at least mostly in the wrong; maybe the movie makes a switch from deconstruction to reconstruction at some point, emphasizing how Pokemon have a natural instinct for fighting and how regulated battles let them satisfy their desire without harming anyone and growing their relationship with their master (maybe reminding Ash of how much Pikachu and others fought for him), mocking Ash’s and the movie in general’s excessive grim darkness and immature attempts at being mature (“When I was a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” -CS Lewis), and generally showing how beautiful the world of Pokemon can be for both children and adults, nostalgic and new.

@Mist The ToadI know the Pokemon world isn’t perfect, and the anime certainly glossed over a lot since it’s mostly for children, but that doesn’t mean I can’t think Ash is mostly in the wrong here.
I’m talking about reconstruction here, not just a return to totally normal; I want it to acknowledge that people and Pokemon do get hurt in the gym system, and some trainers will be abusive @$$holes, but Ash’s attempts to destroy it without any alternatives are just going to result in more deaths, people being unable to protect themselves from wild Pokemon, and the destructions of so many powerful relationships between people and Pokemon.
It’s like what Misty said at 2:15; “You think closing the gyms will end the violence? Ash, the gyms regulate that violence, and contain it.”

I agree. I never was a fan of a dark Pokémon world. And,honestly, I don’t really like to see something soo special to my childhood turning something so dark.
Like, the anime, the games have been so special and shining to me. I played all them with my dad. It’s was so magical and incredible.

It's a common trope to have the "character thought dead is actually alive" in your movie, so revealing it just makes us wait in suspense for when we'll actually see the little guy.

I would love to see a full version. Even if it wasn't a 90 minute feature. If the story could be told in 30 minutes and it looked this cool, that would be fine. I think this is a take on pokemon that a lot of people have wanted to see explored for a long time. For years now, I've seen the occasional piece of fan made media focusing on these aspect of pokemon. The dog fighting, animal abuse, illegal trafficking aspect. Things like Apokelypse and Dark Edition trailers, both of which are very good and have a lot of views to back them up. There is a market for this story; a story that takes the idea of pokemon and pokemon battles and turns it on its head to tell this story. And if it can be told using the figure of Ash Ketchum, who many of us grew up seeing on tv, as the catalyst to tell the story, I think it would be the perfect storm. I think a lot of people would donate to see this thing made.
The only downside is the legal aspect. Because to make this as a film, especially with money involved, is to send a public invitation to every Nintendo lawyer saying "please send a cease and desist letter and threaten to drag me through court till I'm bankrupt and am incapable of doing anything creative again." Sadly, I think that we will never see this story or any like it come to light in any significant capacity beyond the occasional fan film.

Yeah, Nintendo has made it very evident theyre making pokemon for kids and if they can get the older generation to buy a game that works for them too. They'll never make something like this cuz it doesnt appeal to kids.
I think the closest to something like this happening would have to be a story set in a world reminiscent of pokemon, but not actually pokemon. And there are apparently some dark manga and anime set in a setting similar to pokemon, though I haven't gotten a chance to watch/read them.
