Villa will come good , they have a very good team , they did not play that bad , I think Newcastle wanted to win this more and came with a better game plan than last year which Villa battered us

Newcastle played really well but that result has been coming for weeks. Was quite surprised Emery didn’t make half time changes.
He should have, it was dire. Howe was tactically clever and Emery wasn’t.

Thanks for getting this show out so quickly Pete, I was craving a debrief on this game. You are spot on that its 2 nil to Eddie Howe on tactics. I was at the Man City game and that was incredible, one of the best performances I have ever seen at VP. However since then, we have struggled to tactically outsmart teams who have figured out how to frustrate us. There is a lack of creative vision in the final third. I think only John McGinn is contributing regularly in that area and not regularly enough frankly. Ollie is really on fire at the moment, but the midfielders are just not finding him enough or feeding him with opportunities to create something in the final third. Leon Bailey has been our best outfield player over the past couple of months and yet he is not starting which is a head-scratcher.
I'm not complaining, we are still at the dizzying altitude that is 4th in the league, but we need to address our play in the final third, the players who are on the pitch to create are not doing it at the moment.
Diaby has been poor since the first 2 games to be fair... Bailey is head and shoulders above him. Dont know how he's getting starts he's been a total passenger
Haven't viewed your channel since the last time we played and forgot how good of a youtuber you are. I honesty expected a spanking, you have been fantastic this season and had great luck with fitness. Best of luck for the remainder of the season. I still stand by wanting teams such as ourselves and Villa etc. to tip the apple cart over.
We couldn’t seem to adapt to the game circumstances. Even when 3-0 down, we couldn’t stop the tip-tap slow passing build up when we were desperate to get the ball forward and create chances. We seem, to have stalled, on and off the pitch. Newcastle deserved their win and could have had more, much like the game in august. How we react to Sheffield United’s rough house tactics will be vital to getting a result there.
This result has definitely been coming. We are struggling for multiple reasons and I called a loss before the game having seen Newcastle put in some good performances recently without always getting the result. We can only hope there is a quick fix. My feeling is we will be inconsistent for a couple of months. I don’t have any inside info, this is just a bad feeling but Luiz is playing like a man who knows he’s off in the summer. He’s still very good but his drive just isn’t there atm. Hope I’m wrong.
What was Emery thinking starting Diaby over Bailey! Overall though it's been a reality check for a lot of fans this month, our transfer window has been disappointing as have our performances apart from second half at Chelsea. I think Emery is correct in his opinion that seventh place would be a good position to finish in. The squad is simply not good enough and financial fair play will stifle any progress to be a top four team.
Maybe he thought at the hour mark we'd be 1 goal up and Bailey would be coming in fresh to kill the game off.

Let’s be honest, this has been coming for a while, since the 6th December (Man City game).
In fact since we took a break from the Europa Conference our league form has dropped off.
I think for this game Emery possibly got his team selection and tactics wrong.
Make no mistake, the squad will know what Emery’s thoughts were post match. I understand why Bailey didn’t start but I’m betting he will start vs Sheffield Utd.
One bright note, Bailey was outstanding when he came on.

It always amazes me how little people think of eddie howe. Eddie Howe is a class manager that can beat any other manager tactically, bar maybe someone like Pep
Great round up as always Pete. I know what you mean about that feeling about losing. I felt so terrible after night. That was such a frustrating watch. The spark has gone and the high line, which I actually enjoyed watching is starting to p*ss me off. It's so easy to get round now that teams have worked us out. I don't know what the answer is but the players need to up it. Especially DIABY!!
Top quality as per usual Pete. I found the level of urgently in the final 15 minutes just became frustrating, tired and all too familiar. Confidence is low but I’m sure it will come back. Get a couple early goals and a good thrashing of team is what is needed. Would love to see it against Sheffield Utd but we got lucky at VP 1-1 result and that was that of the poor performances, so reckon we might have to wait a couple weeks. Start Bailey for sure, bring some magic back. UTV
I was hoping to see changes at halftime based on how the team was playing but that didn't happen, New Castle did their homework and basically controlled the game, they were much hungrier to win than us until the introduction of Leon Bailey, my word, why he didn't start or come on at halftime?

UE is to blame for this poor result, Diaby should not be on the pitch. Again bringing on Zano was a waste of time. i know you like him but for me Zano has done nothing to impress me. i rather one a young player come on.

Excellent review of the game. I must admit as a Newcastle fan that I expected the Villa midfield to overpower our heavily depleted trio of Longstaff, Bruno and 17 year old Miley.
Thank you for the positive summary Pete, much appreciated. This is such a fortunate time for AVFC, brilliant owners, a world-class coach, and wonderful players. Not so long ago, at this time of year all we had to look forward to was a relegation battle. I like Eddie Howe but I take Unai any day of the week. At the moment we are 11 points clear of the Geordies. One massive irritant for me is the lack of discipline of some of our players, in particular Zaniolo who often gives away silly fouls that wastes time when the clock is running down. Douglas Luiz often gives away silly fouls too in dangerous areas and gets unnecessary bookings.
Credit to Newcastle; their tactics were spot on and Villa didn't have a plan B. Onwards to blunt the blades UTV!
The challenge over the course of the season is to maintain the fight.
I think as a unit, we are falling a bit short at the moment. Despite this downturn in form, McGinn has kept his standards high.
We have much to be pleased about this season, so let’s keep backing the team and management. Them are well capable of rediscovering the early season form.

There was no ignition last night. No crunching tackle. No quick 1-2. No pacy counter. Just one paced and limp. They have some big units and an aggressive alley cat who won all their individual battles. Even Gerrard recognised the teams small profile. I'm surprised we've coped so well without Mings this season, but it's really showing now. We need some dogs of war.
Villa have over performed first half of season..some of these players who have played beyond expectations have now hit a wall..club simply doesn't have the squad to cover injury suspension or loss of form..good news there is enough of a points gap for Villa to have time to recover from this slump and stay around top 6 and perhaps push for fourth place..no doubt that the season will get tougher from February onwards..keep the faith though..Emery will turn this form around.

I like this, as a Newcastle fan but the idea that Eddie Howe wouldn't out tactic Emery is the reason why Eddie Howe keeps out tacticianing other managers. He's absolutely mustard. So is Emery in fairness.

Howe is probably the only manager I think on parr (or better) than Emeri. He foresaw the passes to Cash, he foresaw the through balls. And he locked down Baileys advances fast. Although New castle got lucky with deflections, Howe is a also a very strong manager.

Im definitely with you pete. Of course i didnt think we'd go on winning at home forever but to loose like that is abit of a sucker punch. To me this is just a blip that was going to happen at some point this season. I said in November what we were doing then was creating a nice gap so we can still get into the Europa League. We may loose on Saturday but i don't feel like the wheels are coming off its just not rolling needs abit of wd40

i think us losing torres has been a big part to play also changing our back 4 the way he has, has hurt us we need to go Konsa RB, Carlos RCB, Lenglet LCB and Moreno LB for now otherwise if it was possible i would have lenglet out straight away very poor on the ball... plus not starting Bailey over Diaby is criminal

Villa absolutely need to win their next game or else it could be the start of a losing run.
Personally, and I don't feel like any pundits picked up on it, I saw Watkins hoding behind the CBs too many times in the first half when our players attempted to cut it back - he neeeded to either drop off for a cut back, or get in front of the defender - and in my opinion that massively cost us in the first half. Lone behold, when he scored, it was the first time in the match that he got infront of the defender as the ball was crossed....
Spot on regarding their press but the flip side was as important to me. We just don’t seem to get our pressing right since the City game. Very pedestrian pressing and not enough bodies. They played through and around us over and over. For me that was the biggest difference between the teams.

I can't wait for the next game to come, we have to banish this and move on. But lots of problems have emerged that Emery needs to find an answer to. The players are not fatigued, our fixtures haven't been that taxing of late, the problems are tactical.
Diaby cannot play with his back to goal, he's best running behind defences, so against a low block that is a problem. We're not blessed with options like a Liverpool or Man City, but Emery does have some wiggle room, for example Bailey can give us width.
It's the first real bump in the road, but we have an elite manager and coaches, I have faith they can find a solution to this little slump before it becomes a freefall.
Listening to the match on Villa TV, the constant 'duh' by Alan McInally was telling. As co-commentator, Alan would get excited by a couple of passes and the came the depressingly repeated expression of disappointment. How we need Pau back! As for next matches, well stuffing Uniteds would be wonderful of course, with progression in the cup as a meaty filling for the sandwich. Bit laboured I know but we can't all be as brilliantly slick as thee. Up the Mighty Villa Peter.

Spot on Pete, we didn't play well and we didn't deserve the win! Newcastle played well and out managed Villa......Professor Emery and staff will need to review the videos and take some notes on what they need to change and fast! Season can go from good to crap fast and there a couple teams just behind us who are playing well. Don't want to beat the loss to death so let's move on and get some wins under our belt.....these players get paid millions of dollars to perform with the help of world class physics, massage specialists, dieticians, physchologists, etc, etc... I don't want to hear any BS about being tired!

I remember the Ron Saunders team of the late 70s/early 80s. They played the best and most progressive football of the era. They were fit,talented with plenty of spark. Oh what a joy they were to watch. Yes,there have been some good performances from the current squad,but lack of consistency is their main downfall.
I also agree Ramsey is a shadow of last season. I don't think he's properly fit. This is a major disappointment to me,with all the medical science etc at hand,some of our players look unfit.
