- Written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, the song was first recorded by Sedaka in 1973. American pop duo 'Captain & Tennille' covered it in 1975 and their version became a world wide hit. The single went to No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the US, it was the best selling single of 1975. The song was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and also won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1976. During 1975, 'Captain & Tennille' also released a Spanish version of the song, "Por Amor Viviremos," which reached No. 49 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In addition to being covered by other artists, the song was featured in Mae West's final movie, 'Sextette,' and was used in several television programs. Although challenging to arrange for accordion, the song was a joy to play.
One of our former band's favorites, we played the Captain & Tennille version many times. Thanks for the memories B!
Thank you for the compliment, Nick! This was certainly a fun song to arrange. It had been going around in my head and I knew I had to do something with it or it would be going around forever. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Bernadette
You have certainly and enjoyably nailed it this time. A backyard accordionist can feel very inadequate watching and listening to that bass arrangement.
A head titles piece by Henry Mancini from the film "The Silver Streak" might be faithfully playable on accordion as it has a similar bass pattern. It runs from timecode 0:00 to 2:25 on this linked youtube clip. Unfortunately the piece as presented rolls over into the next cue without a nice conclusion. ruclips.net/video/KJX6S1MQTGk/видео.html
Thank you very much for noticing! I put a lot of time and effort into creating this arrangement so, I'm really glad someone noticed. "The Silver Streak" theme does have a similar harmonic pattern. I'm not sure how practical it would be to play on accordion. Neil Sedaka admitted to borrowing the pattern from a Beach Boys song. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Bernadette
