Edward and Bernadette [née Conlon] Zabawa

It has always been my dream to bring the accordion to a wide audience. That is why you will find such a wide variety of music from classical to pop, rock 'n' roll to heavy metal. You will also find some world and folk music, tangos, country, and more. My music is sorted into categories by playlist so you can choose to listen to whatever takes your fancy whenever you want. You will also find videos which feature my young daughter, Stasha, who I consider to be the future face of the accordion. It is my hope that through my channel I can show that the accordion is capable of much more than the folk music for which it is known. I use a variety of different styles of accordion, acoustic and MIDI, standard (Stradella) bass and free bass to express my music interpretations. The majority of my pieces are my own arrangements. Having trained classically, I bring the knowledge and technical skills to each different style of music. I love the challenge of making new music work for accordion.
Bernadette - The Standards "How Insensitive" for accordion
"How Insensitive" is a bossa nova and jazz standard composed by Brazilian musician Antônio Carlos Jobim. The song was released in 1963. Jobim recorded the song in 1994 with 'Sting' on lead vocals for his album 'Antônio Brasileiro.' The song has been performed and recorded by numerous singers such as Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Liberace, and Olivia Newton-John to name a few. This was a request from one of my subscribers. Having heard my interpretation of Chopin's "Prelude in E Minor," he requested me to play "How Insensitive" in the same style. The falling harmonic progression is similar and gives this already melancholy song an even more desolate feeling. I am not the first musician to play...

Wow Is that your arrangement? Is it available?
Just beautiful, you have amazing skills!

how long have you been playing accordion i wish i was as good as you
Brilliantly and beautifully done Bernadette. I can’t count the number of times I’ve played this song. I don’t think there have been as many tunes from the jazz idiom that have such emotional depth as this one in both the quality of the chord movements and melody, simply put to a fantastic chord progression that immortalizes Chopin’s Prelude in E minor. Often found in musical books in D minor, the composer originally played it in B minor. I’ve played it in both keys but prefer the original B minor key. Internally, I’m of quite a stoic nature and find the melancholia of this tune a contradiction in terms but my discipline comes out and says “Get used to it Richard, paradox is everywhere and there’s no getting away from it, a universal joke mother nature likes to play, has played on us since time immemorial." I've mused on the title Insensitive chosen by the composer and have concluded that the Bossa Nova version is in deed a contradiction to Chopin's most sensitive depth put into his prelude. The Giulietti in your hands is brilliant and really makes this song come alive. Blessings. Richard.
One of our former band's favorites, we played the Captain & Tennille version many times. Thanks for the memories B!
You have certainly and enjoyably nailed it this time. A backyard accordionist can feel very inadequate watching and listening to that bass arrangement. A head titles piece by Henry Mancini from the film "The Silver Streak" might be faithfully playable on accordion as it has a similar bass pattern. It runs from timecode 0:00 to 2:25 on this linked youtube clip. Unfortunately the piece as presented rolls over into the next cue without a nice conclusion. ruclips.net/video/KJX6S1MQTGk/видео.html
Well there's a good childhood memory back to different times and ways of life. A neighbour had a big old but then new radiogram. "Diana" plus Julius LaRosa's "Suddenly There's A Valley" would be playing on it very often cranked up loud. They did not play anything from Elvis.
Why do i like this song so much Bernadette? Well it reminds me of that amazing innocent love I had for a few of my gorgeous female teachers without the 'I'm so young, you're so old.' They were just my secret innocent loves. Of course now that I'm older, looking back I've known a few women who told me, "He looks at me with those innocent puppy eyes." I'm now sure that my teachers back then could see the same thing but they treated me with grace and courtesy as they would have any of the other students. But it had a profound effect and put me in a direction to be the man I am today. May innocent love never go out of fashion.

I'm giving Bernadette a B and Anastasia an A. Beeutiful ladies. Richard.
Thank you very much, Richard! Stasha certainly put a lot of work into this and we are glad you enjoyed it. Bernadette and Stasha
Sensational, as always. I love the mother/daughter duets.
Thank you! We appreciate your compliment and we certainly enjoy playing for you. Bernadette and Stasha
I have heard those street organs in Holland and your playing brings back those memories. Richard.
I glad this brings back some nice memories for you! Did this song actually make it to Australia in 1965? By the way, did you see and clog wearing mice? Bernadette
It's so easy.......like taking candy from a baby ? I don't think so ; however it sounds great. Richard.
Thank you very much! There is a modicum of practice required for playing this song however, I have never taken candy from a baby since I think that is very mean. Bernadette
Amazing! Love it!!

You are a great team! You both make this look so easy, but I realize that hours of practice go into this.
Thank you very much! You are quite right, it does take a lot of practice. Bernadette and Stasha
I love the music! Beautiful playing.

Oh my God. I thought I was the only one who played this tune ever since I heard it on the radio by Ronnie Hilton back in I think about 1965. Usually this song is performed by folk bands but I started playing it along with another cute tune called the Log Driver's Waltz... they seem to go together. I was fascinated to hear the Dino Baffetti for once in just accordion mode only. Sounds great. And I love all of those little embellishments you put into the music too. And aren't those key changes in the song amazing? Adds to the dynamics I think. Laughing out loud from you video notes: Clog wearing mice indeed. Still looking forward to you playing some baroque and classical. In the meantime... Blessings.
Thank you very much, Richard! I'm so glad you enjoyed my rendition. The funny thing is that when I was looking to put and end screen on my video, directing viewers to another video, the song that came to mind was "The Log Driver's Waltz" which is another charming piece I had never heard before and was a request. I will honor your request of some baroque music. In the meantime, Stasha and I have a little duet of classical pieces which I recently uploaded. Stay tuned because you also requested Paul Anka's "Diana," which will be coming soon as well. Bernadette
@@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion Much thanks Bernadette and though belated, a very happy new year to you and your family. How different will 2025 be than 2024? My intuition tells me it's going to be bizarre upon bizarre. But let's look for the blessings anyway.
@@Richard-x5s Happy New Year to you too, Richard! When it comes to life in general, I always try to see the glass as half full rather than half empty. My husband tells me I am a romantic idealist. Bernadette

Beautiful, Bernadette. A new tune to me . Catchy. I can almost hear Abba doing lyrics. Richard.
Thank you very much, Richard! Yes, this is a very catchy song. I had never heard of it before but it does fit into the same style of music as ABBA. Bernadette
Nice, Bernadette. A very professional set / backdrop too.........and a key change . What more could one ask for ? Richard.
Money, Richard, Money! Seriously, thank your for your compliments, both for me and my set designer. Bernadette
I enjoy pieces which have that octave echo with the held lower note. I am not enough of a real musician to know what that is correctly called. I use it on an accordion version of Roger Whittaker's "Dirty Old Town". Considerably offtopic, here is a link to a piece that you might simply enjoy listening to. The piece probably would not translate faithfully to accordion as it is a ragtime piece for piano by a present day composer. It is named Tiffany Lamp Rag by Vincent M. Johnson. A duet with a free bass accordion player might work but getting there would be a real mission. ruclips.net/video/a-g9Bysqpa0/видео.html
Thank you for your compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for your interesting link. It is a lovely rag but I am not sure how well it would work on the accordion. Bernadette

That is a nice listen. The progression of tone colours you achieve on the bassbox I have yet to master. My stiff-jointed fingers are no longer able to be as contortionate as they once were. You most likely know of accordionist Cathie Travers and may have already heard her piece Old Mr T's Dormobile. Her instrument, a Titano, she had modified by masking off one of the high keyboard registers with paper patches which would be reversable to restore the instrument to original. Here is a link to her piece which you may enjoy. All the best for the New Year for you and your own. ruclips.net/video/6nQKHXShTBM/видео.html
Thank you very much for your compliment! I spend quite a bit of time practicing to achieve this motion of my left hand fingers. I am always trying to improve my technique. The video link you sent was interesting however, I am not sure what the purpose of blocking reeds with paper would be. I would assume you could just use a different switch. Bernadette
@@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion. I think it was to achieve a particular custom tone that was not available with the switches.
