After putting down my guitar almost thirty years ago, I’ve finally set myself the challenge to pick it back up. I turn sixty next year and my goal is to break through the confidence barrier to be able to play a few songs for family and friends and work on from there. One of my sons taught himself to play over the past few years simply using RUclips and practising constantly. He’s absolutely incredible and he’s given me the motivation to believe I can do this. Perhaps not to the level he’s at but it’s definitely possible. So here goes …… 🤞🏼🤞🏼😊
@@Kiime3 i'm laying beside my lime green ibanez electric right now and i do not regret buying it for the price it is above the quality you get from other guitars in its price range.
Also... looking back, I think that the most beneficial thing that I did early on was trying to learn barre chords almost from the beginning, even though I couldn't really use them until a lot later. It feels completely impossible at first, and sounds terrible for a while after that - but once the combination of skill development and muscle development works its magic, a whole world opens up.
And with that, practicing making chord shapes without your first finger! My teacher had me do that early on which made learning barre chords much easier once we got there (still hard though since I have little weakling fingers and really high action on my guitar)
@@nabinchapagain7311 A few things that seemed to (eventually) work for me: -Roll the index finger a little back toward the headstock, so that you're pressing partly with the more bony part of the finger -Focus on thumb position - Break it up into smaller skills - do the index finger alone and make the strings ring, then do the other fingers of the chord, then put it together gradually. -Start by becoming comfortable with the A minor barre chord shape - it's one of the easier ones (at least in my experience), and gives you a very useful B minor triad (vi in the key of D, iii in the key of G)
As an older guy just about to embark on my third go around of playing guitar, with many years of not playing in between, I can not emphasize this enough: HAVE FUN. All your tips are spot on, gotta say, as with any hobby, it’s easy to get burned out. You don’t have to completely step away like I made the mistake of doing. Change it up, play the songs you know in a different style than you’ve familiarized yourself with. Play “Your Body Is A Wonderland” like a reggae song, or whatever. Change it up, keep it fun. No amount of money spent on guitars or effects pedals is going to make you a better player, just enjoy what you’re doing and you won’t be able to get enough of it.
For people struggling with bar chords, electric guitar fixed my problem. Just learning bar chords on the electric guitar has made it so much easier on acoustic. I am still not perfect but I can get 6 clear sounding strings which is a massive jump. Bar chords are easier on electric guitar purely because you don't need to apply so much pressure to the frets because of the pick ups and also because of the smaller neck so I really do recommend trying this if you have access to an electric guitar. Also, electric guitars are SUPER FUN!
that’s my problem 😂 i have an “electric guitar”… it’s an acoustic guitar with a plug! it’s built like an acoustic one and i’ve actually never played it with an amp so idk what it sounds like amped 😂. i’m just praying my fingers will become more flexible, stronger to hold, i’ll memorize the placings, and i’ll build callouses on my fingertips and all along my finger too 😅. pray for me
Agree completely! Get a Fender or Yamaha for a hundred bucks or so. Make a list of songs you can play and a wish list of songs you’re working on. Play something every day. Some fun ones and push yourself a bit. In no time your set list will grow and so will your confidence.
i started with ukulele and that really helped me get a feel for chord changes, how your hands should be positioned, progressions, etc. obviously not the same instrument but having the foundational muscle memory makes everything a lot easier.
The capo tip is so real!! I tried to learn guitar about a year ago and didn't stick with it after a couple of weeks. This year I decided give it another go and spent like $15 dollars on a capo and that made the biggest different. I could actually (try to) play some of the songs that I loved in their original key. It helped me get through that awful first month where everything I played sounded absolutely awful.
"if your guitar is sitting in a guitar case, you are never going to play it". I have been called out. 😬 I've wanted to learn the guitar for songwriting (see my channel 😅) since primary school, when my parents wouldn't let me take lessons because they knew I would have given up on it at the time haha. Having just finished high school, I finally have enough time to start seriously learning it. I'm also considering Music Therapy as a possible career and the uni I want to go to has a guitar requirement. Thank you so much for this video; it was really motivational!
Hey, I enjoyed this. I've been playing guitar all my life but not consistently. I tell people who say they don't have time the same thing, to only play a few minutes a day but I go as far as to say set a time limit and don't exceed it. I still play with a stopwatch. It is good so when the next day comes you can say that you only play a few minutes. Otherwise you could burn out. In time, if you choose you can increase the amount of time. I've gotten so I practice guitar 25 minutes in the morning and 25 minutes on another musical instrument. Then in the evening I play guitar another 25 minutes but it is optional, not forced.
I used to study guitar back when I was a teen and then put it down for some odd years until recently. Your videos and tips have been amazing and extremely helpful. Thank you for helping me feel motivated to play again
Hi Nina, you are right on so many scores. First, you don't need to know much of anything in order to play guitar, it just takes time, perseverance, and conditioned finger tips. For anyone wanting to buy who is afraid of getting the wrong guitar, Yamaha and Fender are two of the most tried and trusted names in beginner guitars. Just find the one you like the best that is in your price range and it'll be good. One thing about chord groups is using an anchor finger which doesn't move for the entire song, to gain confidence changing chords. My first guitars were hand me downs which needed work and I got discouraged so I stuck with piano which is my instrument of choice, however challenging. I live in a music city where there are so many who buy a nice guitar, take a few lessons and put it in the closet until they are ready to move on with their lives and sell it cheap which is how I got my current guitar which is a beauty, virtually new and came with capo, wall hanger, picks, a case and all that good stuff which runs into additional money. Something to consider before buying brand new.
omggg the applying pressure to the strings with your thumb from the back.. that's so helpful! idk why i didn't think about it but it helped get my d chord and a chords sounding better! and if you are seeing all my recent comments on your old guitar vids then i thought i should update you, the guitar i've been learning on was my moms from 30 years ago and it has a belly bubble or something like that and i went to a music shop to beg new sting bc they were so old and rusty (and heavy/ hard to press) and i ended up getting a new guitar! i'm got a cheap fender! i'm so excited, this guitar is so much more comfortable! the old one was a really bulky bently and this one is a lot smaller and easier to manage! this alone is gonna motivate me more too☺️
Thank you for this ❤️ I have played the guitar before but not well: I always get to a certain spot and then give up: my goal for 2023 is to use your videos to learn a song every week or two and grow my skills ❤
Based on having tried to teach myself guitar with moderate success, this all seems like great advice. The only thing that I did (or would do) differently is starting off with fingers instead a pick. It seemed more natural, and it felt like there was less of an obstacle between me and the strings. But that's a matter of preference. One thing that helped me out early on was using silk-and-steel strings - they're a nice middle point between steel and nylon, and make things easier on both the right and left hand.
I did this but too but now I just don't like using up the pick haha, I suppose that's fine but I feel like getting comfortable with using a pick is essential if you plan on going the extra mile with guitar
I took guitar lessons from ages 12-15 and literally didnt learn anything more than the basics so I got frustrated and gave up but at 18 I met my bf who's really good at guitar and that motivated me to start learning to play again, but this time by myself and with his occasional input ( I dont want him to take too much credit haha)

I just got my first guitar today and it is an electric. I got the guitar and the amp for $40. The part that was why my parents didn’t want to wait til Christmas is it doesn’t have 3 bridge pins or the strings. So the total cost is like $20 more. I think it’s worth since I’m going to work to make it work so I will be motivated to learn to play
The biggest mistake with the left hand is to put to much pressure, it wil hurt more, and you might even get cramp. First try the pressure you use when holding an egg, it really shouldn't be more then that. I play for 45 years now, strumming, fingerpicking and classical guitar, and I'm still trying to reduce the pressure in my left hand which shows me down while trying to play fast. And your fingers should be relaxed, only the one that are used at that moment have a little pressure which immediately souk be released when taking it off from the string

Well I have been learning for some time now and just wanted to see what ideas you had,,basically you covered how I do things,, wish I saw this video years ago,,
Your story is kinda similar to mine. My parents made me take guitar lessons when I was a kid but at that time, I didn't have a serious interest in it. So after taking like a year of lessons, the teacher shifted away to another country, and by that time I could play it pretty well. So, trusting me to continue practicing and playing, my parents didn't look for another guitar teacher. But I didn't do anything with my guitar for years after that. And then, when I finally saw the opportunity and resources, I picked it up again (this time with interest) towards the mid of 2021. And your channel has helped me so much! I can play a lot of songs now, and more than half of them are Taylor Swift songs that I learnt from you!
Good advice, as someone who recently decided to learn guitar. This is really helpful. I was thinking of Taylor swift looking at you and was surprised when you mentioned her. 😅
I almost passed this up Nena. So glad I didn't. Very good job with your teaching and sequencing. Your tips are straight forward, streamlined, and motivating. Proud to see you as such an asset to everyone following you.
Hi, I’m 13 years old and trying to learn guitar, Im in year 9 and planning on picking music for gcse. If you have literally any tips or anything. It would be great. ❤️
I just want to clarify for anyone watching this that tabs and chords are different. Tabs are written out by fret and string, chord charts simply list the names of chords in the song. Please do not conflate the two, especially if you begin to venture out into playing outside of just for yourself.
i got my guitar christmas of 2022 and ive been practicing but i've found mine is a little too big for me, like it is JUST BARELY the right size, but too big for me to play barre chords it kinda sucks but one day..... ONE DAY I WILL

it's so funny when you said you did everything just to avoid barre chords, cause same 😂 whenever there is a barre chord in a song I want to learn, I'll just shift to a song with an easier chord pattern. but now I am practicing some barre chords, I guess you really can't just ignore it forever 😂 there's so many songs I want to play but it has a Bm in it 😭😂 so now I'm slowly practicing it and it's sad because it still doesn't sound right and my hand is still slow in transitioning to Bm 😭 but as you've said it only needs to be practiced. thanks for this motivation!!! you're my most preferred and favorite guitar tutor for taylor swift's songs, the way you teach it, it's very beginner friendly!!! I learned a lot from you! 💗 years ago, there's like only 3-5 songs that I can play with my guitar (mostly the only part I know is verse 1 to chorus only) but when I discovered your channel, it improves my guitar playing, and I can play the song full and sing with it. I'm so happy to know your channel. thank you so much, Nena! 💗💗💗

@@heyshoun I completely forgot it was a 2024 resolution I got a little into it I had downloaded an app Simply Guitar and bought the subscription for it but then stopped with the guitar it was months ago in April then I haven’t user the guitar since
@@shelbspuffly man…same here. I bought my guitar some 15 days ago and have touched it only like four times. Why is it so hard to maintain a hobby 😭?
Outstanding! Thank you! ❤
there is also a thing out of plastic and its kind of like a small palate but very thin and is triangle in shape . it can be found in shops. it is used to play the guitar strings on the body's hole part. that tool is very useful and your fingers also don't hurt . i think every guitar player should have it because its very useful.🔺🔻🎸🎸
Im a swiftie who also writes her own songs unless i dont have a guitar YET im gonna get my guitar for bday present this summer and im soo excited to make my own songs and play all of my favorite taylor songs
You are truly a blessing to every swiftie being ❤️❤️
Oh and definitely you should release your songs too they are very touching ❤️🥺
Same
any updates? U get your guitar?
Actually "rising storm 2 intro song guitar " thats my search and its 2023 but hey so far ive watched two of you videos and i can say thank you, you can really explain and show to where i can adapt! keep doing what you do!
The fact that you literally REMIND me of Taylor swift😂
Could you do this style video but for singing your voice is amazing.
HI Nena thanks so much for your guitar lesson. I've learn a lot from you, your ideas are more practical, realistic and sensible. You have open my mind and give confident and better direction to finally learn to play guitar. A lot of kudos to you, I hope that more people can watch your videos.
Thank you for the info , literally I appreciate to share your experience of learning & practice tips and finally I find a channel that give me a realistic way after two years of searching & confusion between multiple sources 🥰🥰
the first lesson i came across on this platform was rather macabre, I made it a decent way through before happening upon this video, so glad I switched before finishing that first lesson, you are showing all your colors here, I love love love how you put yourself out there, SUPER watchable love love love
Excellent video! Thank you for all the helpful links & for simplifying something that I have found in the past to be so daunting! 🎸😃
Love love love the outtakes at the end

What
I use Chordu a lot. You play along with the video while it displays the chords as well as diagrams of the chords. It is awesome helpful and it is free. It works with any song that has a video attached to it.
Can you do a cover of Betty Davis eyes, I want you back, and drops of Jupiter? Like what Taylor swift did on the speak now tour? Much appreciated
Hi nena I love your channel so much ❤️❤️ whenever I watch one of your videos I feel like everyone in the comments you and me are all in a team all of us together just learning guitar together this is such an amazing community that you've created ❤❤❤ ps -you are such an amazing teacher . Love from California 💜💜💜💜💜💜
hi nena i got a guitar about 6 months ago just to play taylor songs, and you have literally been so helpful. You tabs and videos are always so good and helpful, and you are literally the reason i have come so far in learning guitar :D
aw i’m so glad!💓 keep going 🤗💜
You're great! I'm sold. Gonna give this a try, I already got a guitar. By the way, you look like Taylor Swift! ❤
Thank you for this video I learned alot. You are delightful and a great teacher 💝
thank you that help me so will l will definitely buy a guitar that play it all day were did you buy your!
My great grandpa won that exact guitar in a fair and that's the guitar I'm learning with!!
Thanks. I learned so much than a normal guitar tutorial video❤
Anyone 2024?
Yup
Yeah
Yep
Hi, I’m 13 years old and trying to learn guitar, Im in year 9 and planning on picking music for gcse. If you have literally any tips or anything. It would be great. ❤️
Wow this is really helpful becuz i feel the same about the bar chords and taylor swift really helped me alot 😄💕
71 year old beginner who has been trying to learn guitar since I was 10 years old. 😁
I just want to clarify for anyone watching this that tabs and chords are different. Tabs are written out by fret and string, chord charts simply list the names of chords in the song. Please do not conflate the two, especially if you begin to venture out into playing outside of just for yourself.
u r an icon for making these videos ilyuu
i got my guitar christmas of 2022 and ive been practicing but i've found mine is a little too big for me, like it is JUST BARELY the right size, but too big for me to play barre chords it kinda sucks but one day..... ONE DAY I WILL
5 mins turns into an hour or more for me. ❤
I need this because I forgot after months of not playing😊😊😊
Very useful tips, thank you!!!
Thanks this tutorial was so helpful I know guitar I just watched to see if there was something new not much new stuff but you teach well I do teach online guitar as well in my local language and English but this tutorial was very helpful ❤
Nice guitar tutorial. Thank you. I am more than one year late to find your tutorial.❤
Just discovered a channel (because I'm on my guitar journey) and wanted to take a moment and tell you you're incredibly adorable and your energy is amazingly beautiful. Subscribed and love you, honestly haha ^^ have a beautiful day!
Nena can you make a video about picking for beginners? ✨
I agree
Bravoo! You're such a wonderful tutor thank you so much for your top tips
it's so funny when you said you did everything just to avoid barre chords, cause same 😂 whenever there is a barre chord in a song I want to learn, I'll just shift to a song with an easier chord pattern. but now I am practicing some barre chords, I guess you really can't just ignore it forever 😂 there's so many songs I want to play but it has a Bm in it 😭😂 so now I'm slowly practicing it and it's sad because it still doesn't sound right and my hand is still slow in transitioning to Bm 😭 but as you've said it only needs to be practiced. thanks for this motivation!!! you're my most preferred and favorite guitar tutor for taylor swift's songs, the way you teach it, it's very beginner friendly!!! 💗💗💗
110% relate to this comment 😂❤
@@snowfoxxie HAHAHAH omy it's 9 mos ago alreadyyy? huhu I still can't play barre chords 😂

Go buy the carsassi classical guitar method boom. Its a couple hundred years old but will give you foundational technique for any style. Couple this with some you tube technique vids.
Very helpful. Thank you
Great advice. No bs
Great video! thank you!
Like your teaching but I'm left handed so trying to do right hand but seems more easier to just last the guitar on my lap and play
thanks for inspiring!!
hi nice video but what about after you are confident in the 'basics'. As somehow who plays other instruments in comparison im struggling to understand how to actually upgrade my playing. It feels like im just learning song after song and not the actual instrument if that makes sense😅
