  • Matt's extended thoughts on the 2016 film THE FOUNDER and what it teaches us about capitalism.
Starring Michael Keaton as milkshake machine salesman Ray Kroc, the film portrays the story of the creation of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain. Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch co-star as McDonald's founders Richard and Maurice "Mac" McDonald.

Somehow Matt's analysis of Ray Croc and his fungus-like persistence reminds me of Lt. Charlie Marimow, this lapdog who refuses to do actual police work and proper investigations, yet ends up in charge of major crimes only to destroy it from the inside at the behest of his corrupt superiors. When Lester Freamon, one of the few competent police officers, is asked to serve under Marimow, he replies "the man's a virus".

This movie was so deliciously insidious. It presents itself like a typical American Success flick, but the overarching message becomes “only the most sociopathic survives”. Even Kroc’s “persistence wins” speech is wrapped up in “sacrifice everything else on the altar of capitalism, consumption, and crushing everyone who gets in the way of the first two”.

As Matt has explained before on Chapo, capitalism has directives of its own which supersede the will of any one individual operating within it. As we see with the McDonalds brothers in the movie, capitalism as a system will avail them for their purposes, noble or ignoble as those may be, but ultimately it will prefer those who have no values except those which align with capitalism's directives. Croc crushed the brothers because capitalism gives little to no benefit to high-minded ideals, but does give great benefit (as Matt explained) to those without reservations about fulfilling the directives of capitalism as a system. When I think of what Matt's philosophy on Chapo seems to be, it's (among other things) that capitalism is itself a player in the world, and while a rich person with high ideals might briefly lead a business, they will eventually and inevitably fall to someone else who plays capitalism's game. It's the one thing capitalism rewards of its subjects the most.
The end part where Matt observes that the surface-level division of the US' political parties - into the party of the big capitalist with no scruples and desire for more 0s on their balance and the small capitalist with a dream and a project beyond acquisition of money - being in reality just an aesthetic difference of a country entirely composed of Ray Crocs is something he should bring up more on Chapo, as it's pretty much spot on but (I think) is rarely spoken about.
Maybe turning that conclusion onto Chapo Trap House itself is needed more often as well.
