    The last time Jack and Heller spoke in the original series, Jack said “I admired you, I looked up to you like a father”. In this conversation, at 3:40, Heller calls Jack “son”, and that was the sentence that got through to Jack. This was probably a coincidence, but I like to believe this was intentional.

    • @ayandas4305
      @ayandas4305 2 года назад +8

      I’d say “hate” is a strong word. He resented Jack for what happened to Audrey in China, and that anger was justified from the point of view of a father. But despite his (valid) fears that Jack’s way of life would get Audrey killed, he did always see Jack as a patriot who was dedicated to saving lives. He even admitted in the S6 finale that he was wrong to put ALL the blame on Jack for Audrey’s torture and that the country owes Jack a big debt

    I think one of the fundamental differences Heller and Jack have is that Heller is willing to sacrifice his family for the greater good while Jack is not. What i've always loved about Heller is that he never hesitates to tell Jack how things really are, even when Jack doesn't want to hear it. Despite that Heller hates him, he still respects him and implores him to own up to his actions. Him granting Jack a presidential pardon was not to give him a free pass for his killing spree, it was a sign of respect and mercy. The only time when i didn't like Heller at all was when he placed Mark under arrest for forging his presidential signature which wasn't nearly as bad as what Jack did at the end of season 8.
    This scene showed that Jack no longer cares what Audrey thinks about him. The only person he cares about is Chloe. He was reluctant to go through with Heller's wish because he knows Chloe can stop this from happening. He puts all his faith and trust in her. He knows she's the only one who can stop this. The reason why Jack rejected Heller's offer for pardon because he knows he doesn't deserve it. I believe the part reason why he extorted Heller in exchange for his help in stopping the drone attacks was so he could get Chloe a presidential pardon. That's why he asked her to come to the CIA work on the override device. Neither of them would had any access to CIA grounds unless as arrested. What i hated about Audrey was that she had the audacity to thank Jack for "saving" her dad even though it was Chloe who did and still hold her own husband accountable. She clearly wasn't going to let Jack go while keeping Mark on the hook. She hadn't learned from her past mistakes. Not until Cheng came back.
    Jack had finally managed to break Audrey's hold on him. She always had ways to make men forget themself. In the past, Audrey made Jack forget about his country. In this season, she still continued to seek out his attention when she had a rift with Mark. If she'd still want Jack, she had no business to marry Mark in the first place. This shows that it was always Audrey's own fault why her marriages always fail. She doesn't know how to be loyal. She always knew what she was doing. At this point, Audrey had become a threat to Jack and Chloe's friendship and to his chances getting his family back. Audrey is someone who's never had to deal with consequences. It was either her charm or her pretty face what saved her from consequences. As long as she was around, Jack knew Chloe wouldn't want to have anything to do with him. For him it was either Chloe or Audrey. Jack knew he had to cut all ties with Audrey so he wouldn't lose Chloe. He knew that as soon as she's gone, he and Chloe can go on as before but not until. And deep down getting Audrey out of his life was a relief for him. He always had to live up to Audrey's expectations, he felt like he was trapped when he was with her. When he's with Chloe, he feels free and alive.

      Heller never hated Jack. He resented him for Audrey going to China to look for Jack and getting tortured as a result, but didn't hate him. That he got time to think it over and remember how devoted Jack is for constantly sacrificing and not asking for anything in return shows how Heller never forgot how invaluable he was and could acknowledge his own personal frustrations and fears got in the way.

      Nothing you wrote there was accurate.
      Jack doesn't care what Audrey thinks of him? Then what was with that last phone call to her? "I didn't want you to hate me forever" and telling her the only reason he surfaced in the first place was for her sake?
      There was no point in which he had to choose between Audrey and Chloe, lol.
      Audrey never had to face consequences? I seem to remember her being captured and tortured in China.
      And Mark was skeevy as hell. Took advantage of Audrey when she was in that state and claimed to be the one responsible for her recovery. Yeesh.
      Audrey and Jack's mutual desire to be with each other never went away because they never had a chance to experience the natural fulfillment of their relationship.
