This just brought me back to land nav school memories. Thanks for the refresher guys, great job. This should be a must for all backpack hunters. I know land nav and have been lost twice chasing animals, I was only lost till I opened my map lol.

Land Navigation was a slooooow learning process for me. Im surprised I went so far and so long without really "knowing" how to navigate. I quickly learned how to "dead reckon" (plot your point, get your azimuth and distance and follow the compass using your pace count). I learned that in basic training, reinforced it in the Ranger Indoctrination Program, and barely ever used it in Ranger Regiment. Ranger School land nav is a joke. Its a straight dead reckoning course, with no ruck on etc. Although during Ranger School I literally never knew where I was except for when we were in mountains because the Terrain association there is clear as day. I would just anticipate when the RI was going to stop us and I would call up one of the SF guys to show me. In Ranger Regiment we were deploying so much and had such a hardcore training schedule when we were back that getting out in the woods to do land nav just wasnt an option. Years down the road I went to SFAS and was finally forced to really really learn how to land nav using much more than just walking in a line in a certain direction. Then in the Q-course I got really good at it. Years later I went to an "advanced land navigation" course in the mountains of WV. The land nav there was the easy part.

To orient your map to the earth you must make sure that magnetic north on the map is aligned (parallel) with magnetic north on your compass. When you align grid north on your map with north on your compass your map is off x degrees (based on your declination.

What’s the compass Aron is using? Is it available anywhere?

good info for all hunters. in my opinion you don't need a 10 digit grid that's very refined. itll get you within 1 meter. an 8 digit will get you within 10 meters and a 6 digit will get you within 100 meters. so for a generalized location I think an 8 or 6 digit grid will suit you fine

Thanks Brian and Aron greatly appreciate this, first time elk hunting in CO this year. This WILL come in handy, as I am from MI the LP, much harder to get lost there ;)

Cool podcast. Just to be a pita: when Aron was saying "primary" contour line and wasn't sure what the real word was - you were looking for major and minor contour lines. Just an FYI.

+xxbryan715xx Brian and Aron have scheduled a hunt in Colorado for 2016. Should be fun. Plus they'll be going to the ATA show here in January with the MTN OPS boys. I told Brian I want to be a fly on the wall because I guarantee it will be hilarious! They'll be taking lots of behind the scenes footage. ;) - Katie
