Cockroach vs. Hydraulic Press: Who Wins? | Deep Look

- Do cockroaches -- those daring, disgusting disease vectors -- have anything at all to offer us? Scientists think so. They compressed American roaches with a hydraulic press, subjecting them to the force of 900 times their body weight. Don't worry (or do): They survived! How exactly do they do it?

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Cockroaches can cause asthma and allergies as they spread their saliva and poop around your home. But scientists think these daring, disgusting disease vectors have something more to offer us than salmonella. American roaches are one of the fastest insects on the planet. They’re also talented athletes, compressing their bodies while scurrying through incredibly tight cracks. The American cockroach can withstand compressive forces totaling over 900 times their body weight! Researchers are using what they’ve learned about roaches to build robots the size of insects, which can squeeze into places humans can’t - like piles of rubble left by major earthquakes or hurricanes. And maybe down the line, much smaller versions of these robots could even enter our bodies to perform life-saving tasks!
---+ Spider legs inspire researchers!
Biomechanist and roboticist Kaushik Jayaram (@JayaramKaushik), who worked with us on our cockroach episode, also finds inspiration in the creepy, crawly spider! Specifically spider joints! Check out his work with spiders and robots in this paper: doi.org/10.1002/aisy.202300181
---+ Pesticide resistant roaches?
Professor of Urban Entomology Chow-Yang Lee (@chowyanglee), of the University of California, Riverside, studies many critters who cohabitate with humans. He’s been looking into how certain populations of German roaches (Blattella germanica) consistently evade our pesticides. Read more here: academic.oup.com/jee/article/...

Hiya! Mimi Schiffman, producer for this episode here! Have questions? Let ’em rip and I’ll do my best to answer!
I will lean on notes from some of the AWESOME researchers we had helping us with the piece (Kaushik Jayaram, Prof. of Robotics and Systems Design at University of Colorado Boulder @CUEngineering - formerly of @UCBerkeley; Chow-Yang Lee, Prof. of Urban Entomology at @ucriverside; Dr. Bill Donahue, Micheal Donahue, Bryan Carnett and Josh Gates at Sierra Research Laboratories, Inc.)
Hello!
How long can these roaches stay in a “squished” state for? Are there any lasting negative health effects for sustained periods of compression?
Thank you very much in advance!
GREAT question @@chillpill1359 ! I didn't learn about sustained compression for the piece! They were testing for the upper limit of their compression ability from what I understand, not for duration...What I can say is that the roaches emerged from these trials in great shape! E.g. for that black and white video where the roach runs full speed into the wall. I asked Prof. Jayaram how much damage the move had caused 'em and he said they weren't harmed!? Boggles the mind!
What is the difference between a wood cockroach and an American cockroach
HI @@bpdsweetheart8074 ! OH! The world of cockroaches is broadddd! There are more than four thousand species of roaches! I talked to Prof. Chow-Yang Lee about them generally when starting to write the script. Most species of roaches are out there doing great work as decomposers, breaking down leaves on the forest floor and helping with carbon recycling. Just now I did some light searching on the world wide web and it looks like the wood cockroach is a decomposer-type. But they do live in proximity to humans in firewood and under shingles. Cool to learn about them. Thanks for sharing!!!

Legit. It's like no matter how hard you try, they'll find a way to get in... and then die anyway because it's too dry for them. 🙄

The hydraulic press shots were nerve wracking and weirdly intriguing. I was expecting to see the point at which the poor thing got crushed, I was GASPING
for research purpose, I am certain the researcher did crush the poor thing to find the limit of the weight cockroach can take, of course, that video will be too much to be "RUclips friendly"

Resilient fellas. I actually kinda envy their ability to adapt and overcome any obstacles, as well as their can-do attitudes that always find a solution to get to what they want, no matter how difficult it may be.
When you're feeling down, just remeber you're a roach homie.
Woah, those acrobatics using the tarsal claws were so cool! You guys are definitely giving me a newfound appreciation of cockroaches (might help I haven't had to deal with pest roaches in unwanted places before, of course).
Our pleasure!
Roaches are great animals (most of them at least). Just google „pretty roach species“ and be amazed.
Yeah probabaly because of that. I thought that for until I had an infestation.Let's say it was traumatic
Wdym? Also, what anime character is in your profile picture? Please reply to me, buddy!
Never knew cockroaches were this cool…
theyre quite rad, one might say
They're cool until they get to your house
fun fact: cockroaches and mantises are closely related, mantises evolved from cockroaches. If you look at the their anatomy you will realize they actually look quite similar and a mantis is sort of just an elongated roach with raptorial legs.
cockroach: at least our heads arent eaten off when we mate
cockroaches are underrated af

you know a YT channel is gold when they're not afraid to show off swamps of cockroaches in 4k close up - I love it!
The close up shot of the antenna socket really made me shudder
And I was eating at that exact moment
I remember years back when I had a bearded dragon we used to always get crickets for it to eat. One time my local place was out of crickets so we got cockroaches instead.
Honestly the lack of chirping was so much better! It was funny one time my mum came out of her office screaming cos one of the Roaches somehow ended up on the back of her chair xD With crickets if they ever got away, you would hear and see them. I have no idea how one of the Roaches got out...
i once dropped a container full of crickets.... it was not fun.
@@minderbart1 Oof. The worst time for me was when a Cricket escapes before my Bearded eats it so there was just a constant chirping... Looking back I don't know why I had him in my room xD
1:06 Never thought I'd be impressed by a cockcroach doing parkour, but here I am..
Just more of a reason to keep your home clean and stuff put up
So glad the roach didn't get crushed, they're such precious babies I truly adore roaches
Well thats a thumbnail to win awards! I personally love cocktoaches because i keep lots of insect eating pets. The type I raise is way better than keeping crickets ... they are silent, smell way less awful, dont suffer from any diseases, cant climb smooth surfaces, and breed very easily with basically whatever you feed them. Also as a tropical species if any do escape they die pretty fast and they cant breed below 80f instead of getting a cricket chirping in your house for days. Gotta respect there little fellas.
Edit: to anyone curious the species I raise are called Blaptica Dubia. If you've got insectivore pets, or raise chickens, I highly recommend starting a small colony. You can produce hundreds in a 3'x2' plastic shoebox tub with a small heating mat and some air holes.
i never killed roaches before but when i learned they play vital parts in the ecosystem i knew why they were important to keep around. cockroaches are detritivores, which means they eat the dead and rotting materials that nobody else eats, like a clean-up crew. it’s still a good idea to make sure there’s not too many roaches in your house because of the bacterias they can carry, so make sure to keep all food in secure places where critters can’t reach! be very careful if you use poisons or other things to kill or deter roaches though, since roaches that carry the poison can be eaten by bigger animals who then are poisoned, then are eaten by even bigger animals who also get poisoned and so on and so forth.
2:10 Now I wonder how did they find out the cockroaches can not withstand the amount of pressure over 901 times it's weight.
This video made me wash my dishes

0:50 kph is actually a misleading abbreviation once 'k' means kilo, and it is only the prefix that indicates that the actual measure is mutiplied by a factor of 1,000. I understand the urge people developed to shortcut everything in their lives, but I so understand that a science channel shoud stick to the formal nomenclature in certain occasions. Nonetheless, thanks for bringing us great content every time.
It's a shame roaches are so prone to spreading diseases, they're such fascinating animals
Yes, if not for this. I will have no problem with them.
it's really only a few dozen species that infest homes and spread disease, most other cockroach species are just out in the wild minding their buisiness. some roaches are also kept as pets because they are relatively clean and easy to take care of
Roaches can survive a nuclear holocaust.....and politics.
I feel anguish about seeing these pests on my screen and being unable to flatten them.
Whenever I hear 'The meek shall inherit the Earth' I can't help but think to myself "I dunno... roaches aren't all that meek..."
It's okay, I think the tardigrades are way out in front. But I'm betting on the ants and the roaches to be in the running.
I can see how an army of roach bots could help find people in a pile of rubble: most would start screaming if an army of roaches approach them while they're trapped and unable to flee
Fantastic video as usual!
Amazing shots as always

for a second there, i thought this was a weird colab between Deep Look & that hydraulic press channel...
i still would watch it though
3:02 Yea that’ll be the beginning of the end of times😂
the first time I ever saw a roach was when it decided to squeeze through a floor gap that I assume was basically nothing of a gap, my dad also freaked out when it decided to start running toward him at the speed of light.
I have a feeling cockroaches were secretly made by Nokia to test their durability
Just the fact that Roaches have it all figured out, makes me want to call it bad names!
I'd always love this sort of clips.
Funny, Raid seems to have no problems dealing with these things.
Watching this on my lunch break wasn't the best idea lol
The slipper:
“WHAT!”
This is the content I've been subscribed for.
i love the part when the cockroach gets crushed by the machine
For a while there, i thought this was the Hydraulic Press Channel.
you needed to crank the hydraulic press just a bit further
Imagine getting stuck under a collapsed house and a giant metallic cockroach runs up to you to grab you.
That roach in that piston chamber for the testing had seen better days; its like: please end it already.
if hydraulic press doesn't work then why does my flip flop work huh
If they could stay out of human living spaces, I wouldn't loathe them as much. Alas, that is but a dream. They are quick, hardy and nigh indestructible. They are my ultimate nemesis. Fighting roaches is truly a Sisyphian task: it takes stoicism and certainly one has to be a tad mad.
My cat also expert on it. He had caught cockroach every night when I off light and sleep.
As someone who has Dubia roaches as pets, its pretty funny seeing these American roaches being so good at running and climbing. Mine are so bad at climbing and aren't particularly fast either.

Ok but like. The cockroach is the perfect design for a micro robot.

Not sure if that's true but I heard roaches and praying mantises are distant relatives. Either way their bodies do look similar, more than to any other bug.
Actually their closest relatives are termites, but mantids are also related to both.
Distantly related, about as much as butterflies and wasps.
@@suicune690 not really relatives, termites are roaches
