The Vinegaroon Sprays Acid to Foil Its Foes | Deep Look

- The vinegaroon - also known as a whip scorpion - looks like a Frankenstein creation of monster body parts. But unlike true scorpions, it doesn’t use venom to defend itself from predators. Instead, it aims its tail at their face and sprays a blast of acid that reeks of - you guessed it - vinegar. Only this weaponized vinegar is 16 times stronger than what’s in your salad.

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
-
Distant relatives of scorpions and spiders - vinegaroons have evolved a unique form of defense. If you bother them, the worst you might experience as a large mammal with eyes, would be an irritating blast of strong vinegar-smelling acid in your face.
When under threat from predators - mostly foraging night hunters like coyotes, skunks and lizards - it will spray a solution of acetic acid from two glands just above the base of its tail. This spray is made up of about 85% acetic acid (the primary component of vinegar) and about 15% caprylic acid (another slightly unpleasant-smelling acid). It is able to aim the spray in any direction with its tail, and can shoot up to 5 times before it needs to replenish the fluids.
The tail also bristles with tiny hairs that serve to help the animal sense vibrations in the air, and pick up chemical traces of other members of the species, as well as prey.
__
- What’s the difference between a vinegaroon (aka whip scorpion) and a scorpion?
Although they are both arachnids, a vinegaroon is not a scorpion. Vinegaroons are sometimes referred to as whip scorpions, with a skinny whiplike tail instead of scorpions’ typical segmented tail with a stinger. Unlike true scorpions, vinegaroons don’t sting or produce venom.
- What do vinegaroons eat?
Their diets consist of a variety of small invertebrates - including millipedes, crickets, roaches, scorpions and mealworms. Vinegaroons lead solitary lives, and may even cannibalize other smaller vinegaroons.
- Where do vinegaroons live?
There are over 100 species of vinegaroons worldwide, found in tropical and subtropical areas in North America, South America, Asia and Africa. The species we feature in our episode is the Giant vinegaroon (Mastigoproctus giganteus), which lives in the southern US and Mexico. The Giant vinegaroon has recently been reclassified and subdivided further into seven separate species.

Okay, seeing it carrying dirt like that... that was just adorable.
@HUGO THE PIG You've been converted! >:) It just looks like a little kid walking around with their arms full of stuffed animals.
thought the exact same thing and wouldn't you know it? the first comment i saw agrees with me. it's like it's hugging the dirt
The vinegaroon looking all weird:
Also the vinegaroon: ima do my best impression of a 6 year old digging with a bucket
I have one as a pet, they're like tiny bulldozers when they get in a digging mood.
very cute
I used to catch Vinegaroons and raise them.
I fed them crickets, meal worms, cockaroaches.
I had one grow as big as my palm.
I had six in thee terrariums. Plenty of dirt, pieces of wood, even some live plants.
I had a male and female do the whoopy! I got three babies out of it.
Then we were moving, so I scooped up the Vinegaroons and turned them loose in a desert like place.
Thanks for sharing.
Maybe you shouldn’t have released them into the wild. Domestic animals carry diseases that their wild relatives aren’t adapted to.
So cool!
Haha my mom would have burned our house down if she discovered my Vinegar Isle of Dr. Moreau, like that :p
(She got upset when I raised a black widow, then her children on the side of the house.)
I cant with this whole paragraph 😭
I've had one of these as a pet, they're pretty chill
I was wondering if they could be kept as pets. Did you ever aggravate it enough to get sprayed?
I've met it twice in the wild. They are awesome, and absolutely harmless. Did not even spray me.
@@alexmelik4030 try holding up a French fry to it
As a p...pet?! 😳😳😳
I am glad to know ☺
I can't get over the fact that the vinegaroon spray has its own soundeffects. LOL
Yes, they also have a pop music band: "Vinegaroon 5".
@@davepctech1559 I am dead 🤣 🤣 🤣
Yay vinegaroons! Ive kept many arthropods, and my favorite is my Vinegaroon, Apple Cider. They are fantastic little creatures. Once you get over the initial appearance, I find them kind of cute. I love their careful feeling around and lil pincers.
apple cider is such a wonderful name for these critters! very adorable
@@fuzzprobably thanks. Im probably more proud of that name than any other accomplishment in my life 😂
jack but why
@@JackTheVulture If you ever get another one, might I suggest naming it Balsamic?
Have you ever raised a tailless whipscorpion? Big as your palm, fast as lightning, harmless, really cool
Was not expecting the 3D animation, good work per usual!
Hats off to our animator, Teodros Hailye!
You guys finally did it, vinagaroons are my favorite arachnid, I've held one and i can say their pretty awsome. Also the vinegar they spray can apparently eat through chitin
And the spray is such an effective defense that they apparently have no real predators. Even grasshopper mice are deterred for long enough for them to escape an encounter, and those rodents barely flinch from scorpion stings.
@@Ryodraco Venom and smelly acid are different things.
I'm from the Philippines, and I discovered something similar to this in our home today. I was curious and ended up searching, and then I came across this video and discovered it was vinegaroon.
What do you guys call them in Tagalog? Mine in Indonesian it's called "Ketonggeng"
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you, for a good reason to not go to the Philippines 😅
Hala same takot kami baka may kamandag
Could you imagine a skunk thinking “ that thing f**king stinks “ , I’ll pass.
The scariest harmless little land lobster. I kind of want one for a pet.
They are quite popular!
I used to live in El Paso. These vinegaroons grew there too. I lived in a huge old house. We saw them outside (at night), in the garage, and yeah....occasionally they got in the house. They are pretty creepy and the big ones are really creepy. We didn't kill them, but we did catch the occasional house visitor and put them outside.
Thank you for being kind 💜
Should've killed em
yup El Paso is a known area for these little dudes
Finally! It was so hard to find an explanation of how it works for these little guys! Been wondering for years.
I have a pet one of these! I’ve had her for about a year and I really love her. She doesn’t do much but she sure is fun to watch. 💚
I have seen many of these things when i was a kid and i remember being disappointed because i wanted to see scorpions.
I had no idea they were this cool tho!
How big and extremely scary they look, they are actually really docile. I have two as pets and they are very easily handable and to interact with. To get them to spray like that actually takes alot of bothering them, and even if they do spray at you it's very harmless to humans just smells, as their name suggests the spray does smells like putrid vinegar
Mutant land lobster thought the same thing hahaha. At least they are harmless, they are unique creatures. Imagine it scaring off a skunk 🤣🤣🤣🤣, thanks for the content DeepLook
You are most welcome, R J!
Ther is little medicine in nature. So a skunk without its sense of smell may starve or fell victim to a predator.
Im impressed how it is a combination of every dangerous invertebrates and still being harmless
Are baby vinegaroons called ‘vinagrettes’? If not, they should be.
As a Vinegaroon owner, trust me, the smell doesn’t get old anytime soon lol
i am always soooo excited to see a new upload from Deep Look!!!! haha ❤️
a couple years ago i saw your live presentation in San Francisco, at the Exploratorium 😀
That's great! We had a fun time at that Exploratorium event. :-)
I've learned so much from this episode! Vinegaroons are so cool! Thinking about how they can hold their own against some animal 10X it's size is amazing to me. There are so many creatures with their own magic powers!
Spooky, yet simultaneously wonderful.
Our work here is done
I've seen some of vinegaroons in my house. The first time I see it I thought it was male cockroach, but turns out it eat cockroach. Thank you vinegaroon.
The big Vinegaroon scooping a bunch of dirt in it's arm was actually super cute
Awesome, I'd love to see a series on arthropod mouth parts!
Only Deep Look does high quality close up footage!
Skunk: I have a foul smelling spray
Vinegaroon: your not the only one, I also have some spray, something that smells like your medicine
Some Russian info which nobody asked:
Vinegaroons do not inhabit any lands of Russia (the Typopeltis amurensis species are _nomen dubious_ now because it was described once, all samples of it were lost and it is no more encountered) so they do not have any folk name and are called телифон(ы) (telifon(y)) from its scientific Latin taxonomy (Thelyphonida). And jokes like “thelyphone like a telephone” are quite common about these arachnids
(I feel sorry about something but unsure)
Upd.: somewhy I wasn’t expecting vinegaroons to be predatory but it was so predictable…
Definitely one of my top 10 favorite animals as their strange appearance is enough to win me over
I missed the last community tab upcoming video post and I got so excited when I got the notification for the VINEGAROON my heart is racing😂
You're the best Riah!
@@KQEDDeepLook That means so much to me! 💓
Vinegaroons are so strange. I already thought Scorpions were weird, but these guys are even weirder!
Here's a fun hack 🤠
If you're out in the desert and only have plain chips, find a vinagroon to spray some acetic acid secretion into the bag.
You now have delicious salt and vinegar chips ( or something close enough)
Yum?
@@KQEDDeepLook 🤢🤮yum🤮
a hack for indigestion maybe
I love this channel . and the Lady who is speaking was using very understandable speech clearly and slowly . thank you for your efforts. All the best
With a name that sounds like macaroon, I wouldn't expect a hellish acid spitting half scorpion half ear wig
1:13 Anyone else noticed that baby dubia roach running?
I love the chime sound they added for every time it sprayed!
The platypus of the arachnids
This dude is a Special Boss in an Ants Simulator game and it's pretty strong
plot twist the acid it shoots is vinegar
I think this is the first time I've seen a skunk get a taste of it's own medicine.
I used to have these all over my house in Hale Center TX
criminally underrated as another said. Un-undersandable why youtube doenst favor your videos more
🤓
Can you please make a video about giant water bugs? My class saw one at New York and we thought it was unusual to find one on the sideway. So I would like to watch a video about anything interesting about them 😁
The vinegaroon looking like the second cousin of the xenomorph. And it spits vinegar.
Another excellent mini doc. 😁 NGL that shot of it devouring the cricket made me 😬 Once again you've educated me on something I didn't even know existed.
Many thanks!
Deep Look’s latest posts all seem to be bizarre and creepy creatures. I’m not complaining though, it’s really interesting to see an underrated part of wildlife we don’t often think of. I remember learning about Vinegaroons 9 years ago as a girl, and I thought I was the smartest kid in class hahah
I love this channel because: ‘and their poop can be deadly, check em out!!’ 😂
A skunk afraid of stink glands is something new😂
They have a good sense of smell too. Also they nose is at the other end of the body and they use they stink glands only for predators, not in social fights.
the quality and detail of this channel is INSANE
Can they be kept as pets, because I remember seeing some other channel suggesting people kept them. I would like to know. I found this being, unique to say the least.
Happy to have participated! Thank you Deep Look for the shoutout! 🦂
This is actually very informative. Im not a fan of scorpions but this video made them look pretty cool. Thanks for the high quality content.
It's interesting to see creatures with unique defense. I've always liked vinegaroons, and lots of invertebrates, they're kinda fun to watch.
Kinda sad how this channel only has 1 mil 😭 like literally i love yall, I LOVE YOU LAUREN 😍😍😍
You guys are incredible at getting video of animals, especially for invertebrates with all their intricate body parts. Very underrated
I never fail to watch deep look videos
Thanks Aman!
I have a lot of them in my home in Indonesia. I don't know where they come from at first but I see them often in my garden and sometimes they get into my living room. I let them be because they are beneficial to control house pests like roaches.
3:31 "an adult vinegaroon can shoot up to 5 times before it needs to fill up again"
*well, I envy them now*
If one of them sprays me do I get to hear a pretty chime?
another banger by deep look, you guys never miss!
Excellent footage and information! I remember Vinegaroons in the Nevada desert...don't miss them!
Thanks for watching!
First time I saw it in my bathroom, I shocked what the heck creature is this.
After calming myself and think logically, I search it and found out that this is a vinegaroon. A real insect. And it was a cockroach natural predators
When I watch videos ending in "...and their poop can be deadly", I'm proud to have entered the very best circles of the RUclips community.
Thank you for this wonderful video! I got a vinegaroon as a pet last Fall and I love them to bits!! They've been such an explorer and honestly the poor eyesight meant they were afraid when I approached the enclosure. I've handled them a few times now and it's a really unique experience, they are so thoughtful with their movements. Not graceful, but thoughtful. I'm actually scared of spiders, but this little guy has been helping me with that and they're honestly more fun to watch than my fish or my skink.
I caught one while i was in Lewis Prison in Buckeye Arizona. I thought it would sting me,so i was afraid to hold it. I kept her as a pet for 7 months before they took it during a shake down. They also took my horned toad, bark scorpion, velvet ant, and a mexican free tailed bat
I love your work, Deep Look.
Found this creature around my house always wonders what it is called when disturbed you definitely can smell similar to vinegar from it.
This was super interesting. But doesn’t Vinegaroon sound like a Pokémon?
Its morphology makes a clear contrast to that of the scorpion to which we may be more accustomed with an impressive tail. Less scary as it looks, but very interesting. A fascinate creature I've never seen before (overlooked or confused with something else?).
Another excellent job done! (+ bits of an graphic image of meal time, Laura!) Thanks!
But vinegaroons makes another bugs disappear, they are evil 😭😭😭
@@jelenapravilovic6679 carnivore (insectivore) is part of the system in nature, playing an important role of its own. You mean it's an invasive species, causing devastating effects somewhere?

While bugs don't usually bother me as I feed them to my dragon but THIS bug is gonna haunt my nightmares the rest of my days... HE'S TERRIFYING! Glad my baby doesn't have these in his diet cause he'd have to starve if he did! YIKES! Looks like some crab, scorpion ant hybrid from He\\ to me!
This is magnifecent in a trully massive level !!!
Vinegaroons are among the most outstanding arthropods !!!!
Also, can't wait to see a Deep Look at Greater RoadRunners and HornBills !!!
Ugg, I used to find these all the time in my grandparent’s planting boxes. They told me it sprays pepper-spray, but now I find out it’s just really smelly.
Lol, either way, I’m glad I listened to my grandparents and put these things in jars instead of holding them. To bad my mom always made me get rid of them.
ALL arthropodan antennae are specialised legs with no exception. Insects' antennae are, lobsters' antennae are. That's because almost every appendage in arthropods is.
Well, i sure don't want its vinegar sprayed on my salad. Eeeeewwwwww.

I used to have one and I got sprayed anytime I cleaned her cage or cleaned her water dish. It smells exactly like vinegar. Just a little trivia acetic acid is actually a mild(er) acid, so it didn't burn when she sprayed me. I miss taking care of her.
So you said it can spray five times before running empty, but long does it take to recover it?
Deep Look always has the best content! Thank you
Glad you think so!
Vinegaroons: Terrifying if you're small, extremely chill and rad as a pet.
Now a skunk and a vinegaroon spraying each other will be my worst nightmare.
I have never seen a baby Viergaroon before. These guys are super cool!! Thanks for sharing and for the hard work!
How do they fill up those glands? Do they have to eat or do they just naturally refill over time?
Good question! I believe the acid production is a normal part of their metabolism. But we can find out.
@@KQEDDeepLook Oh, I'd love to know for sure! Thank you for the answer!

Nicely done, arachnids rock!
Holy cow I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about Vinegaroons and did a midnight Wikipedia browse. Now you guys upload this...
Missed opportunity to make the title "The Vinegaroon Sprays Acid to Foil Its Toes | Deep Look" with that thumbnail, or toenail rather.
This insect is combination of Scorpion and Bombardier Beatle!
Thanks for sharing this Deep Look. This is such an interesting insect to learn :)
Glad you like it! Wedid an episode on the Bombardier Beetle if you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/BWwgLS5tK80/видео.html
It's an arachnid, not an insect.
Scorpion: hey bombadier beetle?
Bombadier beetle: hm?
Scorpion: wouldn’t it be funny if the both of us comboed into one? And it had a spider jaw and a rat-like tail?
Bombadier: yea lol.
Vinigaroon: hold my beer.
Fun Fact: Vinegaroons also have a pair of serrated armor plates near its pincers that it uses to crush its prey
I was chased by one of these when I was little! It squeezed itself under a closed door. It took years for me not to pigeon toe walk any time I was barefoot.
Btw, you guys can get these as pets. They are one of the easiest things to care for. They just need a cricket a week, a small water bowl, and lots of dirt to dig. They are very hardy, can live for 6m-20f years.
Skunk: “Yeah, the bug spat at me. Gross.”
I love this channel!
I was waiting for this episode! Glad that im here 👍
