Linda was gracious and smiling when she accepted the silver but she was so disappointed. Getting a gold in her own country would have been great for her but silver was an honor too.
Did she do any triples?? How many? How much did figure skating cost per year in the 80's ??
Both skated a 3T and a 3S.

I personally think that Linda was robbed and I can imagine that people in the crowd felt the same way, too. BUT it also comes down to the compulsory figures, which the audience doesn’t see.
What was the weighting of the CP and SP at that time? I remember there was a period where the CP carried a higher weight (30%) than the SP (20%) and I wonder if that was what made the difference. I think that even in the 1970s, the CP/SP was 40/20 when the SP was first introduced.
Jill Trenary won the 1990 Worlds purely based on her ranking in the figures. She was 1st in the figures, messed up the SP, but had a decent enough FP for her to win the Worlds. (Midori Ito on the other hand had a disastrous CP despite 1st SP and 1st FS resulting in her only getting the silver.)
I think this was during that time where compulsories were higher (30) like you said.

Annet scared 3 double Axles, a 3T and a 3 S. Linda skated only 2 double Axles and 3T and 3 S. Annet was clearly better!

Сейчас с точностью наоборот, абсолютно несмотримы танцы, но пары и одиночники, особенно девушки, завораживают.
А я наоборот, в семидесятые танцы не особо любила. А сейчас это для меня самый интересный вид. Смотрю даже соревнования юниорских танцевальных дуэтов.
А самым скучным видом для меня всегда было и остаётся женское одиночное. Особенно неинтересно стало после того, как появилась. Тутберидзе со своим инкубатором

If you're talking about the video at 14:40, I think that was her long program, but yes, that did not at all seem like the 13th best performance in the long program. The judges must have been saving the higher scores for the later performers, as they tended to do back in those days.
@@dpalaganas5916 The Soviets had sold out all their political deals for the other disciplines so the ladies (their worst event by far) was normally sacrificed.
East Germany won the Ladies Olympic Gold Medals for 1980, 1984 & 1988.

I did not se bielman's short but she definitely won the long and potzsch won the short.
+Speedy Gonzalez I don't think Potzsch shoulda won the short, if she did. A double-double for a combination was totally lame even by 1980 standards, versus Linda's 3s-2r, and Potzsch finished behind her music. She was a pretty good free-skater, and she picked good short music to WSS, but her short was... blah.
poetzsch was 4th in the short. Speedy is incorrect. Although 4th was too high, 7th would have been fairer Lurz and Lenz skated far better programs and were put behind in 5th and 6th. Lenz might have had the best short of the night despite only doing a double axel rather than a triple salchow or triple toe combo, and was disgusting she was placed below Poetzsch with a much easier combo, and weaker everything else.
Poetzsch had a poor short program and was probably given scores that were too high considering a jump combination was a double loop-double toe.
poetsch had a terrible short program with only a double loop double toe combination and was over scored by a mile because she was previous world champion and overall she should have been 3rd behind both biellman and fratianne :)
Annet won the figures, Lurz 2nd and Fratianne 3rd (Biellman was 12th) - Fratianne won the short, Biellman 2nd and Allen 3rd (Poetzsch was 4th) - Biellman won the free, Fratianne 2nd and Poetzsch 3rd (Watanabe 4th). Final placings the ones we all know.

Poetsch was overmarked in the sp. Yes she did the elements including the double double but very perfunctory. Compared to say Kira Ivanova years later who was criticized at least she had some style this was not style. Again another Trixie Schuba but I would have had Annette down further. So many other ladies deserved to be ahead maybe even Emi Watanable at there should have been a bigger penalty or rather lower score for the double double. East Germany really had the golden horseshoe during the 1980, 1984 and 1988 olympics. They won three close olympics. Probably1988 was the most outrageous but really this would be scandalous now a days.
I just checked and Linda Fratiane won the SP. Annette Poetsch and That lame ass combo and her exit from the double axel was horrible-she was leaning way forward. Her shoulders are hunched and she's skates like she's on crack. Poetsch had a substantial lead in the figures. Linda lost the gold just 7 tenths of a point behind Poetsch. Linda Fratianne wasn't the most friendly of people but she had a very natural and pleasant ease with her skating. Did anyone notice that at the 1987 Worlds in Cincinatti that Katarina Witt's SP was to the same music? The shared the same coach Frau Mueller-a very ominous woman. Seeing that these Olympics were in Lake Placid, NY she was making her girls 'connect' with the audience something Linda always lacked. The amazing Frank Carroll was her coach, as well as Gracie Gold's coach, Evan Lysacek, Michelle Kwan, Tim Goebel and tons of others'. Icon and star maker! Emi Watanabe is giving major stank face... Carlo Fassi is trying to calm her... she looks like she gonna cut the first judge she run into...
Sorry but Linda's skating was not pleasant at all IMO. She was stiff, ungraceful, and skated the same drab programs, even with the same costumes often, for year on end. Also the way she holds her chin up while skating and jumping constantly makes her look like she has a nose lead. Not that Anette wasnt equally unpleasant, and more inconistent, but she beat Linda the times she did due to figures, and given that neither was a sterling free skater anyway, this made total sense.
M. A. DAVIS - You forgot to point out that Anett Potzsch (German spelling) and Katarina Witt were related via marriage. Katarina's brother, Axel Witt (I guess he was named after Axel Paulsen, who invented the axel jump) was married to Potzsch. They have since divorced.

Figure Skating was abt waiting your turn, corrupt judging finally exposed at SLC Olympics. Linda's OSM is in box under her bed & she's been quoted as saying Beillman was obviously cheated out of Medal.
Frank Carroll = incredible Coach, even today his pupils know quality of edge. Linda, Michelle, etc till finally Evan won OGM

Шикарные вращения, дорожки, заходы и выезды на прыжки аналогичны нынешним...а я и забыла, как оно было... В отличие от парников и танцоров, где прогресс просто огромен, я сейчас вижу, что заходы на прыжки у группы Тутберидзе не очень отличаются от тех, что были в 80-м. Отличные были фигуристки тогда

Linda was R O B B E D and C H E A T E D. Anett was pedestrian at best, did you SEE all the non connecting movements? And she two footed her first triple. Complete sham! Denise should have meddled but she was just too far back in the standings. Frank Carroll has screamed for decades Linda was absolutely r*ped by the judges, and she WAS! Then she finished bronze at the World Championships, when her performance there was even better than here! Love you Linda!
Even with the stupid ordinal system in place in 1980 I don't see how they possibly managed to put Potzsch in gold medal position. She had lower scores than Linda in both programs. Of course, this video didn't give us the positions at any point in the competition so perhaps Potzsch had a giant lead after the school figures. I don't remember what percentage they counted in 1980. Just a cryin' shame for Linda.

@@bevinboulder5039Potzsch absolutely had a giant lead in figures as the normally did. It was fairly common back then for skaters strong in figures to win. Watch videos of Trixi Schuba who is an even worse free skater than Potzsch, won everything due to her figures.
@@grantdesjardins764 Agreed, however after the Schuba fiasco, when the crowd was chanting Janet Lynn's name because she hadn't even medalled, The ISU changed the % of the total score that school figures would count. They gradually decreased the % until school figures went away some time in the 90s, I think. So I don't think that school figures could have counted for more than maybe 40% of the total. I tried to confirm, but couldn't find the info on the internet.
@@bevinboulder5039 Yes they only counted for 40% but even with that Poetzsch had a big enough lead to win. Remember only in the short program worth 20% did Fratianne score much higher than Poetzsch as you see above. In the long program Fratianne beat Poetzsch by 8 of the 9 judges but as you saw their scores were almost the same still.

I forgot what a gross mess the Ladies event was. The men had enough eye candy to blot these results from my memory bank. Best part of the vud was Frank rocking that 80s beard.

Actually, no she did amazingly considering she was 12th after compulsories (a part of the competition we don't see as viewers but counted for the majority of the scoring then). The scoring system at that time weighed compulsory figures (which were hardly ever filmed, or watched for that matter) at 40% of the total score. So, good compulsory skaters like Poetzch would usually win, regardless of how good the free-skaters (like Biellmann) would perform. At this Olympics, Biellmann only got 12th place in the compulsories; Poetzch got first place there. Biellmann's second place in the short and first in the long launched her WAY up to fourth place. Had Lurz (3rd overall) or Fratianne (2nd overall) or anyone else basically - had won compulsories, then Biellmann probably would have won. I forget when compulsories were finally done away with altogether, but I think it was around 1988-1990 - so now what you see on the screen is what you get with the scoring, with no "hidden" parts that were boring for viewers to watch.

She's certainly did the triple toe and salchow. She may have had a triple loop, but I don't think she used it in competition regularly.
Was she the first american to do triples in a competition?? How old was she when she learned them? What is the oldest age to do triples?
@arf2847 Both Tina Noyes and Janet Lynn attempted triples (toe loop and salchow) at the 1968 Olympics. I'm not sure if they were the first, but they were certainly among the earliest American women to do so.

I didn't like the way these skaters hair look kind of moppy, Today's skaters look better than the skaters of the 80's.
What a silly comment to make. That was the fashion back then ! Films special effects are much better today than 30/40 years ago but back then they were amazing !!!
I respectfully disagree. Many look like injured tots and half-nude strippers in Halloween costumes. I believe it has - for the most part - become a sick charade instead of sport, outrageous political corruption aside.
