OMG I love Split Enz, they were the first bands i fell in love with. This was one of their bigger hits but less zanny than most of their stuff. Neil generally sang the more poppy stuff and Tim the more arty/wacky stuff. I See Red, Dirty Creatures and Message to My Girl some of my favourites. But i love anything by the Enz!!

Split Enz started as a prog rock/prog pop band but then went more pop rock when Neil joined at age 17 and co-founder Phil Judd left. He's about 19 or 20 in this clip. Really great band. His brother Tim is also in it as a co-founding member.

Thanks team for reacting to this. Split Enz is a New Zealand band not Australian and they shouldn't take any credit for them. I take Ty's point that the chorus sounds a bit 60's Beatles which is a fair observation, one I hadn't picked up on.

Australia will give you back Russell Crowe and The Split Enz if you release our Pavlova from New Zealand taking it hostage. 🙃

@@CeasefireNow2024yawn… @skintrader100 is 100% correct. Split Enz was established by Auckland art school students in the early 1970s. They were all Kiwis. It’s not a matter of giving back anyone or anything; Split Enz is a group from New Zealand

The verses are SO 80s creepy, but the chorus is a straight 60s pop sound. So unexpected and catchy.

Funny how he picked up on that! I had already typed it before he said it. Good call!

Such a great band - Neil Finn got to be in 3 iconic bands (Split Enz, Crowded House and Fleetwood Mac) and not too many people get to do stuff like that. You should check out Neil & Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder covering "Throw Your Arms Around Me " sometime.

I got to see Tim Finn in San Francisco in 1989. I have loved Split Enz since I saw them play on SNL in 1980. 😊

I saw Tim Finn in the80's when he opened for 10,000 Maniacs and he was just as good as they were. Actually, a little better because of how he talked to the audience and told stories about some of his songs. It was just him a drummer and another guy on guitars. I had no idea he was in Split Enz although I liked them and Crowded House but had no idea they were brothers. I bought his self titled album after that concert and fell in love with it from the first song.

I think Tim Finn has the more interesting voice. If you want to get a better picture of the band you should check out there 2006 reunion tour. You will find it on RUclips.

Wow, had you been in Australia in the early 80's you would totally get Split Enz....they were amazing. They would never have been listened to any earlier....they were ahead of their time! The thing is to not look at the videos, they are not good and don't reflect the songs at all, it's all about the musicanship, the chords and the way they used the synth to almost sound 'classical'....every one of their songs builds from a simple song to a complex song and the moods they create with their chord choices is where the real magic is.

@@reactionextraction Always difficult hearing a song and liking it after the first listen. That's why air play helps.
