I just watched 'The Kingdom'. Thanks Marc for handling such a challenging and delicate topic so well. As a long time believer I have found both blessings and hurts among God's people. I think our churches fail when we stop following Jesus and start following people, whatever the size of the church. May God give us all the courage to examine ourselves and our churches to see if they relect Christ. Thanks too Laura for your insightful interview.

Nah, follow the teachings of Buddha instead. Or maybe Mohammed. Christianity is overrated! In the lists of Gods created since humans walked the earth, Jesus was only a son so doesn't rank highly out of the thousands on the list. At least God himself could come to earth in the 21st century?

@@multioptioned Thanks for your thoughts. Ultimately faith is about being open to the truth. A lot of the religious leaders in Jesus'day couldn't handle the truth as it messed with there place in society, but the poor, the weak and the humble were open and received his powerful message. I'm not one for religiion unless, just real faith. Jesus has changed my life and the lives of billions of people, in a way that philosophy or religion can never do. It makes no sense without faith. If you are open to try it, it can change your life. It's up to you.

@@stevepaterson7600 People can have faith in lots of things including themselves. Ultimately people change their own lives if they want to. Christians believe that acceptance of Jesus is the ONLY way to heaven and eternal life. That disrespects every other faith. Basically saying all those "non believers" will go to hell and be punished eternally. Ridiculous. If you were born in an Islamic country raised in Muslim family and society you would not be a Christian either.

@@multioptionedi, all beliefs are man made constructs except Christianity my friend.
Jesus said “I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father except by me”. John 14:6.
Jesus Christ could claim this astonishing statement because He is God.
      John 1:1-5 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. [4] In him was life, and the life was the light of men. [5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
He is the Living Word made flesh and as eternal God created all things.
Believing in Him alone will see your sins removed freeing your soul from the judgement of God and His resurrection from the grave will free you from the fear of death granting you eternal life.
It is an impossible act to follow He has done it all and loves you with a steadfast love.
Don’t be conned friend, Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

There needs to be an Australian voice, which is why the documentary is important. But it also opens up the way for a lot of others to have a say, when they wouldn't be listened to. True faith is not based on feelings.

    Hi Mark
I've just watched your documentary on SBS about the Kingdom ( Hiillsong)
    I'm a committed Christian myself
I had a powerful encounter with Christ way back in 1978
during the Jesus revolution in America
that swept the western world including ,Australia at that time
I had a real born again experience with Christ, without any of the fanfare and emotionalism that goes with the Pentecostal denominations these days
Yet after I heard the Gospel, I was baptised and filled with the Holy Spirit in a dynamic way
and started my journey of following Jesus, which still continues until now, knowing his awesome love and presence in my life that gives me much joy and an eternal purpose for the future
Knowing I have been redeemed and rescued from destruction and judgement
My heart nearly broke as I watched you, in that empty Church, Mark and in the Church meeting of Kingdom city, saying that you felt nothing,my friend
You know It's not what you feel that should determine your destiny
    and relationship with Jesus
It's believing that he loves you, proving that by going to the cross
and giving his life for your sins, so you can come back to the Father
Just like the prodigal Son, knowing that Father loves you, so very much Mark
Please don't look at the religious Church world for answers, but look unto Jesus and the scriptures alone, he will reveal himself to you
I pray that you will find him, despite the corruption of the religious world
    Love Greg Greedy 0401940498

Such a great conversation Laura. Thank you for asking the question about the central teachings of Christianity and difference between focusing on he Church and looking more into Christ and his teachings. And wow... 'this is the conversation I was most hoping to have... the first thing I said is I want to talk to Hope.''

Can we have documentaries on every other religion and their churches? Just as likely to be as valid and real as Christianity if not more so. Hillsong is a business it just doesn't pay tax (like most big businesses in Australia).

I really appreciate Marc’s intelligence and self awareness in this interview. As a fan of his work for years, I hope his personal journey goes deeper and he has an experience of God, not dependent on feelings but with rational logic. I’d point him in the direction of Tim Keller’s brilliant work.

@@multioptioned really? I know many who follow the religion of atheism who always seem to be drugged, including the drug of alcohol. Some of the highest rates of suicide are Hollywood elites and the rich and famous. Around 2000 men commit suicide each year in Australia. @@multioptioned when Jesus spoke to the religious Phareesee, He said you must be born again to see the Kingdom of God. Jesus didn't come to start a religion like Hillsong. He came to reset humanity. To restore the brokenness of this world. Hillsong doesn't speak for Jesus. It's a man centred prosperity gospel that tickles itching ears. Jesus never had Caesar come to any of His sermons. It was religion and politics that had Him hung on a cross.

Mark says he is a heathen and was lying to his wife about going to church. Is he lying now? " For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” ~ Jesus. Really don't know why 103 Hope is giving him airtime. I'm not going to bat for Hillsong. But if people chose to worship Jesus via a Pentecostal church that is their choice. Is Mark going to do a stich up on the Muslim faith? I wouldn't recommend these $$$$ churches. What I will say is Jesus is real. He loves you and wants to give you eternal life. No strings attached. By grace through faith. He became sin so that we can become the righteousness of God and give you the gift of the a Holy Spirit. Atheism believes in nothing. There is no hope in nothing. What I will say is " there is no atheists in hell" I also believe that the atheist world would be full of pedophiles, murderers, perverts, extortioners etc etc etc. Jesus has overcome this world and the works of the devil. He is victorious and the wolves in sheep's clothing will suffer the consequences of their greed and any other wicked work. There is a judgment coming for every person alive on this earth. Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. I would encourage Mark to not blaspheme the King and to change his mind and to put his faith in Him. His name is Jesus.

Your right mate. I’ve seen Pentecostal/hyper-Charismatism do a lot of damage to people including myself so I don’t recommend it, but it’s those believers choice.
At the end of the day Mark seems to be another looking for excuses to deconstruct.
Christianity is not a magic pill you take and all is well after, it’s an active faith, moment by moment, walking with Jesus the one who has promised us eternal life and loves us with a steadfast love promising to never leave us or forsake us.
Mark talks about being empty in church and about his empty feelings etc but God never asked us to go by our feelings it’s a walk of faith hanging on to the promises God has made in His Word regardless of what is thrown at us in life.
To Him alone be all the glory.
