I'm suspecting he got this from the USS Texas gift shop, so the rifle he would have been talking about is the 5"/51 Caliber Mark 7 and Mark 8 guns which comprise the secondary armament of the ship. The 5"/51 has an effective barrel length of 255 inches (21ft. 4in.).
It's a 3"/50, hence the "50", it is called a "three inch fifty caliber." Caliber, when talking about artillery, means a distance of length. My dad had that car. Plush seats. My dad loves fishing. He kept all his fish gear in there. We called it The Fish Car. I would get in and touch as little as possible. It smelled.
