  • Pointing out the problems with cultural competency does not make anyone a bad person. However, I hope that with this explanation it can inspire clinicians to be more mindful of their biases and how that affects the way they work with their clients. It's impossible to exist in a therapeutic relationship as a "blank slate" when we have lives outside of our work and profession. Being willing to acknowledge that we're not perfect and innocent all the time is the hardest but most important part of this work.

As someone who falls into multiple marginalized groups, I really appreciate this! I also have been loving your content this year. I just got my Music BA and I'm gearing up for MT school applications for hopefully next year. Your channel has really helped me get a better idea of what this field looks like and what I can expect so thanks!!

Homophobia is not a phobia in psychology. It is a term used by people with a particular cultural bias to oppress people whose cultural tradition holds that homosexuality is immoral. To use that term is the opposite of cultural humility. It is to oppress another group.

Weird philosophical question do you ever feel like this obsession with cultural competency and humility will ironically create folks who are culturally hegemonised killing what actually makes different because we will be afraid to make mistakes experimentation etc

Mmm, no. I think that cultural humility allows space for differences rather than placing the dominant culture's values onto those from marginalized groups. There is space for making mistakes and experimentation, but this keeps people accountable in giving credit where credit is due and making sure that people are included.
