The take away I got from this song is the woman is telling her story and she's saying the glamorous life isn't glamorous at all. She's lived an empty life despite her exploring. She's telling us that the simple things in life or the simple life is the most fulfilling life. That you don't need to do this or do that to feel fulfilled. This could also mean that staying true to yourself is the best thing you can do and don't need to be envious of what others have.

You nailed it! This is exactly what this song is about. Age and experience is what it takes to really understand what Charlene is singing about. Angela is still young, time will catchup and she will understand. Not bashing Angela at all it just takes time and experience to fully understand the meaning here. Its a sad song but hauntingly beautiful message.

Hi there. I promote Charlene in the UK and Europe and I can tell you that when Charlene actually recorded the take that you heard in that video and on the actual 7 inch single that came out, she was the victim of an abusive relationship. She had black eyes, broken ribs and was bruised all over when it was recorded. Her first husband shot her dogs in front of her... she was broken in every way. Now you listen to this song again and imagine everything I have said, coupled with a real broken heart. Charlene says she didn't sing it from the heart but from the gut. This song is an absolute masterpiece.
The song was recorded around 1976 by Motown but it took until 1981 for it to chart when it reached #1 in the UK.
Charlene continues to sing and is bringing out some amazing new stuff. Her last two songs have become airplay hits in the UK.

You may not feel as deeply about this song if your young and not experienced much of life yet. As you get older you will understand there are sometimes consequences or regrets of decisions you've made. The song is a much older woman talking to a young woman of her regrets and that running after frivolous things can in the end leave you sad and alone.

This song was written by my late friend, the great lyricist Ron Miller, who also wrote lyrics to "For Once in My Life," "Touch Me In the Morning,' "Yester Me, Yester You, Yesterday," "Can't We Try," and many others. Ron was the fourth person I met when I had two of my songs published by Motown in the early 1980s. He was a brilliant writer and always treated me as a peer, rather than a mentor. I will write about him in my memoirs. I miss his energy, intelligence and friendship, which was unusual in that we didn't hang out together, but it always felt like we were continuing a conversation whenever I would bump into him at a restaurant or music event. Simply put, he was a lyrical genius. This is not one of my favorite of his songs, however, which I told him once.

Hey Larry, I think these lyrics are amazing. When this song came out I loved it and it really got me but didn't really know why at the time. It was at No1 in Australia for many weeks from memory. Then one day after hearing it for the 100th+ time many years later, the penny dropped for me. I believe the song is saying, money, expensive things, luxuries places, being with famous people, etc won't lead to living the perfect fulfilling life (ie paradise) but will instead cause you to eventually become bitter from that lifestyle (the sweet) after running out of places and friendly faces to see. The narrator is begging to tell her "this so called paradise, it's all a Lie" and "Why I'm all alone today" and for her not to go down that same path. So in the end, it's saying, if you've "Never been to me" you will be all alone and bitter at life. The truth is love which only comes from within (ie "been to me"), "..And it's that man you fought with this morning, the same one you are gonna make love to tonight, that's truth that's love". I can understand why you see him as a great lyricist. All the Best!!!!!

It was a hit in the radio but many people did not understand the message. Several commenters are right that the song is about regret and how the mother and wife thinks the others life is perfect but it is not. It is lonely. Many thought it was cheesy I mean how can jet setting and living that lifestyle make you lonely and regretful yet it mostly will be.

  • @fricky11111

It goes against the modern feminist thought process. She goes seeking inner power and satisfaction but in the chase she forgets who she is and in later life she realizes that she would have been happier and satisfied if she had stayed home and been a mother and a wife. She realizes that women can do the things men cannot do and that is their true calling. In the song she's warning the younger girl that she's on an errand that will ultimately leave her hollowed out and unhappy and in the end she doesn't have to compete with men but enjoy being a women. In my humble opinion

Never give up on your dream. In 1977 Charlene released an album on Motown's imprint Prodigal Records that went nowhere as well as the 3 singles that all peaked in the 90's including this song that peaked at 97. The album was re-released that same year with different artwork & new tracks & still nothing. The albums were abundantly found in cut out bins for 99 cents.
In 1982 a Florida DJ started playing it & it took off locally. He contacted Motown & Motown President found Charlene (who had retired from music) living in England & working at a candy store. She was again signed by Motown & I've Never Been To Me went on to be an International hit peaking at #3 in the U.S. She also had a regional duet hit with Stevie Wonder called "Use To Be"

This song was used to good effect in a cult classic film called *The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.* It's about a group of Abba-loving, disco performing drag queens travelling across the Australian outback in a colorful bus to do a big show. It's campy fun and features lots of great '70s songs. Highly recommended!

Oh, I love this song…the melody and her delivery. She has the quintessential 80’s hairdo! First time I heard this song was on the radio coming back from a catholic school field trip in 8th grade in the 1980’s so it forever reminds me of those great days…even though the content of the song has nothing to do with my love of it!

This is actually a really sad song. I heard this song many times back in the 80’s and now that I am in my 60’s when I hear this song it really is a sad song as it tells the story of a life spent on things that were fun at the time but now she is much older and is lonely as she looks back at how the life she thought was so glamorous and fun was actually a wasted life. So sad because it is so true for so many people.

My weird interpretation, this is a song about regret. The narrator is telling the younger woman in the song about her life and all that she has done and seen. But now that the narrator is older she thinks what the younger woman has is actually more fulfilling than her life. The twist is it starts out as a warning to a younger audience but by the end, is the older character realizing they have wasted their life away on frivolous things.
    Or maybe not, lol.

It's saying, you remind me of me, and im upset I didn't realize what I had/could have had....I did all these things and yet I'm alone...hear the sound of her voice during the spoken portion ...it's that man you fought with this morning, the same man you're going........it hurts her she is aline and doesn't want someone else to do what she did.
It's regret and warning, I did it, it is empty, choose better please

I didn’t take it to mean that she had an abortion
Just that she never chose to have children
It sounds like she had a bunch of casual encounters that seemed fun at the time, but of course it takes a little piece of your soul every time it happens
I told an ex-girlfriend of mine that there is always a difference between sex and love
      She didn’t understand

I love beautiful melodies and this one hits that mark. As for the lyrics...I think it's important to remember the setup that she is talking to a "discontented mother", "unhappy wife", who is "cursing her life". She then of course shares that she lived a live of self-indulgent pleasure seeking, something most of us are tempted to do at sometime, mostly when we are young. And she did it all, jet-setting with royalty, selling her soul and her body to others for what she thought was fun at the time. But when you are relying on others to foot the bill, eventually you aren't young enough anymore, a few sags here and there and the spigot runs dry. You sit empty and wonder what could have been. What could have been real? What could have lasted? What could have been if she wasn't chasing what she thought was fun until she found her real soul.

For both men and women who run from relationship to relationship and experience to experience
And at the end, everybody wind up alone

    To do things better

This song is crazy. I disliked it and frankly laughed at it when it first came out. Maybe it was well meaning but...I mean, yeah. Some of those lyrics just crack me up. I haven't heard it in years and had to see your reaction. You did not disappoint. 🤣 But you tried to be nice as you always do. It's simply a campy, strange song and it's hard to know how to react.

That song is an old memory. I never knew who did it, but do remember hearing it on the radio back then.
It definitely sounds like a soundtrack song from the 70s. No idea what from though.
    Very cheesy.
    Have a great day!
